And took their seats in Junior High To start their high school fame. This Freshman class was green indeed Their initiation, they'll never forget: And out to Blondy's for a merry sleigh ride, A party, they'll never regret. The next fall they came as Sophomores Although less in number . And took their seats in the Senior High. This year, I will always remember. The Freshmen initiation in October Given to the Freshies so green Is an event that will be remembered forever In the memories of the Sophs, I ween. The next year they came as jolly Juniors, With every effort to win. Their play was an outstanding event. The best that's ever been. A beautiful prom these Juniors did give, A With a party so full of fun: Their sleigh ride party and picnic Helped to make the year a happy one. We, as Seniors, came this year, Although only seventeen in number We regret to leave the A. H. S. Which we will always remember. As he was exploring, he decided to look through his telescope to PM 'ia see what his classmates of 1930 were doing. First of all, I saw Henry Dreessen, a violin instructor in the Utopian High School. It washard to recognize him for his hair had grown long, black, and curly. I have suspicions that it was a wig. Irene Zimmerman is the happy housewife of a famous basketball referee, Mr. Albert Moldenhauer, of Janesville, Wisconsin. I saw Leona Kunert in the hills of old Kentucky, nursing a family back- to-health who were suffering with lock jaw. She is known as one of the best nurses in the State of Kentucky. - Gordon Strauch is an athletic instructor in the Fall Creek High School. His four sons helped to make up the midget baseball team. ' With a surprise, I see Merle Hall a great W. C. T. U. Worker. She gives lectures on this subject in all the parts of the U. S. She received her broad knowl- edge for lots of talking in her high school career. , Mahlon Moldenhauer is the President of the First National Bank in New York. He received this great position by bearing his motto in mind, I've got a pull with the boss. I Arnold Johnson is Secretary of the Treasury in the President's Cabinet. He has given S5000 to the poor people in Ireland where they have recently had a potato famine. When he studied Sociology at high school, he made a thorough study of the situation in Ireland when they had their last famine. Lucille Ida has gained fame from the anti-curly hair tonic which she in- vented. Everett Livermore is known all over the world as the second Eddie Cantor. He has made himself popular with his dancing and singing on the stage at Ludington. - ' ' Niada Zank, I wonder where the quietest girl in our class is? Alas, she is a private secretary for Dells Milling Company. Among her various duties, we find her arranging the programs which are broadcast over WTAQ for the company. Page Twenty IIT ,,, , ii' fi , ,,. .,. if H E S P I R I T Sfkfllillflllli. 45 H ,.l Yflhnwi I- 1 digg-:31Xc :vHEk L - C' And here is Eleanor Olson--er, that is, Johnson now, She is the tried but true wife of Arnold Johnson, the famous Secretary of the Treasury, She is one of the most popular of the younger matrons of Washington society. We always knew that smile of hers would win even the most staid and serious politicians. Marcella Menge-Oh! there she is--what is that we see her doing? Why. she is shaking rugs from the porch of a cute little bungalow at Blair, Wiscon- sin. Here comes her husband home for lunch. Pride shines in her eyes as she runs to meet him, for he is the best road contractor in Wisconsin. U-rah-rah-here is the famous Keith Langworthy. He is hailed as one of the world's outstanding football instructors and has coached many a football team from good old Kirkham Valley University to fame. They say his son is a regular chip off the old block, and great things are expected from him, also. Ahem! Meet Edgar Paddock, folks. By much hard labor in his labo- ratory, experiments, observations and explosions, he has made his name famous all over the world. He has succeeded in compounding a fluid, which, when applied in a correct manner, will reduce double chins, grow hair on bald heads, straighten crooked noses, and is a sure cure for corns, bunions, and ingrown toe nails. Be sure to try some if you have any of the above ailments, it's a whiz-bang! Wilma Langworthy is dancing in Ziegfeld Follies. Her slender form and graceful dancing has made her the leading character in the new Broadway hit. I have one more of my class mates to find, Lucille Sieg. I have looked all over the earth for her, but she was the same way in high school, two or three places at the same time. Oh! I spy the girl. There she is composing a theme song for the talkies. Everyone seems to be excited over it. She always was so original. LEONA KUNERT, ELEANOR OLSON. Page Twenty-one www 'l'h1'1'1I Row-Vwlorks. Kohnkc. Barllctt, Rickard, Miller. Held, l-'lorcl .S'1-mm! The Augusta boys fought hard but Medford's cutbacks, pivots. and end runs were persistent gainers for them. The game ended 52-0. MONDUVI vs. AUGUSTA On October 19, the Mondovi boys carne to Augusta. Ed Moen did his stuff when Al was taken out of the game about the last quarter. At the end of the game the score stood 18-0 in favor of Augusta. L ARCADIA VS. AUGUSTA ' October 26, Augusta went to Arcadia. The game was one of nip and tuck but the Augusta boys came out on top with a score of 17-12. It was a hard fought game: ask any of the boys. HUDSON vs. AUGUSTA 1 ' November 2, Augusta went to Hudson where they took a beating. Au- gusta out-played Hudson in line plays, but it was a passing game that won for Hudson. Augusta was unable to stop Hudson's star player. The game ended 12-6. 5 On November ll, all of the schools in the conference went to Stanley to see Black River Falls and Medford play for the championship. Cr HE SPIRIT . .:wi?l'g.,'ii-igllfbrig w.1,,,Mlrl, ' X X Qi'-' 'SzEE'ST 'll'C 3LXLf' 'EEJ7 'IIIKQ JUST A WORD OR' TWO FROM THE COACH A Due to the fact that Augusta plays a line plunging game, the Seniors, who are all linesmen, will be missed next fall. Keith Langworthy, captain of this year's team and right tackle, was the outstanding linesman. All of Keith's games were his best games due to his hard tackling, sportsmanship, leadership, and never-licked spirit. The above qualities will make him a hard man to replace. . Edgar Paddock. right guard, is another Senior. Bill's spirit is explained by the following incident. At the half of a certain game, he was asked how things were going. He replied, All right, but there's not enough to do. Leland Rickard. left guard. is not a Senior, but interscholastic rules pro- hibit his playing next year. Although Wink was the wag on the team he was a valuable defensiveplayer. It is undisputed that Wink's best game was the Medford game, for he got fully 50 per cent of the tackles. In the Mondovi game Mondovi had a yard to go to a fourth down. Then Wink hit the fullback so hard that the wind was heard escaping the burly fellow on the side lines. Everett Livermore, left tackle, was slow to start in the season but devel- oped into an aggressive type of tackle. The Galesville game was Everett's best game. Mahlon Moldenhauer, left end, was forced out of the Arcadia game be- cause of injury, but nevertheless, this was his best game. Guss' greatest point was getting down under-punts. Guss was shifted from the backfield to end. This seemed a little against his will, but he sacrificed self-glory for the good of the team. It is doubtful if these men can be replaced on the Purple team next fall, and the remaining Purples hope that they will carry on in their future work with the same spirit as shown while in Augusta High School. It may have been Friday, the thirteenth for Mer- rillan, but not for Augusta, Ossiio vs. AUGUSTA December 20, Augusta went to Osseo via truck. AUGUSTA January 10, Fall Creek, Augusta's old rivals, took a beating on their own floor by a score of 15-12. The game was very exciting all the way through, but especially, when the score was 12-12 and about a minute and a half to play. After the game, Fall Creek gave a party for the students and alumni. FAIRCHILD vs. AUGUSTA January 17. a game with Fairchild was held at Augusta. Not so fast as-it might have been, but Augusta won just the same, 32-16. We don't know what slowed the boys down. Maybe, they do? Ask them. HUMBIRD VS. AUGUSTA January 24, Humbird came here. Another victory for Augusta, 26-9. Augusta and Black River Falls are tied for first place in the Little 8. Neither team has lost a game. MERRILLAN vs. AUGUSTA January 31, a game with Merrillan at Merrillan. All of the subs had a chance to play. It was almost a wa1kaway for Augusta. The game ended. 24-15. OssEo Vs. AUGUSTA February 7, Osseo came to Augusta. A better game than the one at Osseo although both teams played hard. Augusta won another game, 25-20. FALL CREEK VS. The game was held at Fairchild. Well, we won the Little 8 Conference, with nobody to dispute our rights for first place. The boys played splendid basketball all season, and were rewarded for their pains by not losing a game. The boys didn't do so well at the tournament. It seemed that the boys couldn't get going. They lost the first game to Eau Claire: and the second, with Cadott. Altoona won the tournament for which they should be congratulated. Mahlon Moldenhauer and Keith Langworthy are the two basketball play- ers who will graduate in the spring. Mahlon was captain of the team and played forward. Keith was a 'Asub but got chances to play quite often. Oh, yes, the coach should be congratulated for his splendid work with the team. .L fl.-4 f fu La' ,' ,t .rg yy! After interscholastic athletics for girls were ruled out of the schools of Wisconsin, there seemed to be a general drop in the interest in athletics for girls. Physical directors saw the need of supplementing something whereby the girls' interest in athletics could be aroused. That led to the establishment' of Girls' Athletic Association: A chart was made out whereby the girls were given a certain number of points for each athletic event they took part in. In November 1928 a Girls' Athletic Association was organized in our school. The girls have taken an active part in all athletics. Girls earning a thou- sand points were awarded a letter A while those earning 1500 points were awarded an A. H. S. monogram. The club, this year. has had a very successful year. The most interesting events of the season were: ' Party for Cadott G. A. A. Return party for Augusta G. A. A. at Cadott Basketball Tournament for girls. G. A. A. party for school champions. I wonder where those teachers can be Who made my school days glow In studies and all the rest, And helped me win a schooling rep That swelled my head and chest. Ah, I sure was a scholar then Back in the days of yore: And I wish those times were back again When out upon the assembly floor I had subjects with Kuehn and Widmer, And Anthes and Belisle. Seated in seats about the assembly floor, And study and study to reach the tip-top In the days of yore. Ah, hallowed days of memories Aglint with fancy's glow, Where can those lovely maidens be, The teachers I used to know. -M711 42'- . -aa 5.16 ---Written by Kyle B. SYNOPSIS The action of the entire play takes place in Homestead Hotel, a typical boardinghouse hotel of the little town of Homestead. Peggy l-ou McFadden lives with her motlier, who is the proprietress of the hotel. Russell Van Horn has been sent to manage the building of a highway through Homestead. This is his first experience, and since he has not a fighting heart, complications set in which cause considerable troilble. , Joe Dawson, one of the local boys dislikes Russell for several reasons. He feels that he and his father are not receiving a square deal in the building of the highway. He also feels that he is losing his sweetheart, Peggy Lou. Nipp, Rainbow Runkle, and Old Probyz are real characters and add a great deal of humor to the play. All other members of the cast help to make the story interesting and worthwhile seeing. Man or Mouse has vivid and colorful action. It weighs contrasting points of view in such a way as to develop a commentary on the transition character of our time.
