It is my sincere hope that each of you have found this to be a profitable year. I congratulate all of the Seniors on their graduation and wish you the best in the future. I hope that each of you will let Augusta High School hear from you. For all of our other students, school will again be in session next year. I am sure that next year will offer to you the educational experiences that you need and desire. giaaflifff Board qfEa'uoatz'on Works far Augusta Schools Six thoughtful and successful citizens comprise the Board of Education. Working Without renumeration of any kind other than the satisfaction of a job Well done , they work many hours each year to insure that Augusta has one of the finest school systems anywhere. Seated-left to right: Mrs. james Barber, Max Blackwelder, Vice President, E. A. Brooks, James M. Benjamin, Dwight Markley. Standing-left to right: Ralph Burgess, Clerk, Virgil Simpson, George R. Mabry, jr., President. 4 X Education Totals Our Experiences Education is the total of our experi- ences during our life time and it is the task of each of us to profit as much as possible from them. This copy of the AUGUSTAN is, of course, a compilation of some of the highlights of our experi- ences during this short year of our life. It chronicles the friendships we have made, the success we have had, and it recalls the days we spent together. The AUGUSTAN is a part of our education. I sincerely hope that you will always treasure it. . 4.53 ,nf School Tear Better Due to Stajjf Mrs. Rachel Baccadutre, left, and Mrs. Frances Cyphers right, served not only the administration but also the stu dents. Without these two capable people, the adminis- trative processes would have been slowed down consider ably. Their friendliness and helpfulness made the school year run that much better. Looks to the Future Our last year of high school. With this in mind We, the Senior Class of 1964, approach the halls of AHS. Now this year is gone and we may look back with pride at our record of accomplishments in the scholastic, athletic, and musical fields. Our minds have been instilled with the memories of hurrying feet, the uninterrupted rhythm of classes, the between class conversations, friends and experiences. We have felt the responsibilities of leadership and have worn our confidence with pride and dignity. With memories of the past years and with new dreams of the future, we received our treasured diplomas with an array of pride and dignity ...... and perhaps a little sadness. 10 SONG The High and Mighty FLOWER Red Roses COLORS Cranberry Red and Silver MOTTO We Have Stood Together, And Now We Go Our Own Way . pay- 15,51 fr 4 - 1tw Lau, , ,, AU. .,., , 1,-,, 5 1 st, 1- Q, 4, f. ,xt, g.,. Class QFIQ65. . . A chieves Wz'th Pride This has really been a busy year for the class of '65. Their first project was the selection of the traditional class rings. Many achievements were reached throughout the year. The annual junior Class Play and the junior-Senior Prom, which was presented to the graduating class of '64, were only a few of their accomplishments. Now with only one year left, the juniors have a sense of pride and confidence which has been acquired in the past two years. 1 A , 14.14 .-1 l , A g,f il., . Slowly creeping through the halls came the spirit of excitement All through the first week of March, the AHS students talked only of basketball and the regional tournament. The basketball squad had not only the facts of English and history in their heads, but also each complicated basketball play. The cheerleaders were busy planning pep assemblies and new routines for cheers. Even the teachers 'and Augusta citizens were caught up with the excitement of the up-coming tournament. The 1963-64 Oriole cagemen had earned well all the proud feelings of their fans. The AHS team took the first place at the Newton Tournament by beating Wichita Southeast 65- 57. Then on February 28, the league season ended with the mighty Orioles on top with the outstanding record of nineteen straight victories. As M iglzgz Orioles Headjor Regionals. . . ABERLEIN The time had finally arrived and the Augusta Orioles were bound for the region- als. Augusta received a bye for Wednesday, March 4. To send the cagemen off in high spirits, an exciting pep rally was held in downtown Augusta. It included encourag- ing pep talks from Mayor Lee Dennet, Chamber of Commerce President Lee Hoopes, Coach Hutter, and the two cap- tains, David Murrey and David Souder. All of the A team were present and cheered on as each was introduced. Hopes Were High, Then. The students showed their enthusiasm and faith through signs, cheers and all-out attendance at the WU Field House. That Friday night, Augusta was teamed against Wichita North High. Again the Orioles kept their record spotless. The Augusta team won 55- 50. S Disaster H its Basketball Team In Heartbreaking Loss to West With high-flying hopes, Augusta moved into the regional finals against Wichita West who had defeated Wichita Southeast the previous night. From the beginning, the Orioles found themselves up against many dif- ficulties. The Augusta press simply cou1dn't force West into any turn- overs that were advantageous for the Orioles. With short fast passes and driving lay-ups, West managed to maintain their early game lead in the closing minutes of play. The Oriole fans kept up their loyalty to the end. Few gave up until the final game went off. Defeat came as a surprise to all the Oriole fans. It was just too heartbre aking to have come so far to lose to West, 67-58 As the second place trophy was presented and accepted by David Murrey, many realized that the mighty Orioles had come a long way, For the second smallest class AA school, the Augusta Orioles had done a fine job. Vocations Important Part q'Ea'ueatz'0n Vocational work represents an important part of education for the senior stu- dent at Augusta High School. By familiarizing himself with a possible future job, the vocation student learns the merits of that field as well as its drawbacks. I-le also learns a great deal about himself and other people he must work with. During halftime of the Augusta vs. Valley Center A game, Lexanna jones was crowned Queen of Basketball. Lexanna was given the flowers and crowned by the two captains, David Murrey and David Souder, who also bestowed upon the queen the traditional kisses. As Queen Lexanna was crowned Kathie Davis and Diane Berndsen, the runners-up were given white basketballs and the traditional kisses by two other Oriole cagemen, Bob Evans and jim Miller. The three lovely girls then were escorted to a throne in the stands where they then presided over the rest of the game. PEA CE A L T T We, the Augustan staff, find it is hard to put all the memories that have accumulated during the past year into one book. How can you put the excitement of winning a ball game, or the tears that were shed during that last: final game against West, the scurrying between classes, the feeling of surprise and happiness of the prom, the anticipation of graduation, and the sudden realization that another year has gone by? We can only place pictures and words on these pages. You will have to supply the rest. To the juniors and Sophomores we wish best of luck. May they find next year as memorable and fulfilling as this year. The end of the year comes only too soon for the 1964 graduating seniors. No longer are they a united class but each is an individual. Instead of looking to the past, full of long hours of studying, gay times and close friendships, each must look to the future full of hope and promise. We, the Augustan staff, wish the 1964 graduating class the best of luck and much success and happiness. The 1964 AUGUSTAN Editors, exit! ...Mao WWJ
