Brown Gary W. Burns Making lifetinne friends is an important part of tlie college experience and for sociology majors Mary Louise Capers, Sandra Parson, and Elizabeth Hag- len, they have found just that type of friendship in each other. When asked what they liked best about A.C. they replied: Recently, what we have enjoyed most is the lake front property at Clark Hill. Every Friday, we drive up to the lake to get away from the pressures of school. It revives us especially the beer we d rink. It would be nice to see more students and faculty at the lake — they do not know what they are missing. But the best things has been the wonderful friends we have made at Augusta College. Daniel J. A.C. has been a Peabody Family tradition for three genera- tions. Patti, a member of ZTA, feels that her sorority has enriched her college life by providing her a sup- port group and lifetime friends. Patti, with her dedica- tion to A.C, it is no wonder that she is also a member of the student government and in this year ' s Who ' s Who. Ellen Kloss Linda Lacot Gerald McCoy Susan McDowell Stevi McKnight Kay McNally Paula McPherson Seniors 47 Senior biology major Doug Johnson for the past year has been president of the Student Government Asso- ciation. Reflecting bacl on his college experience, Doug states: The four years that I have spent at A.C. have been the most enjoyable and rewarding years of my life. I have enjoyed both the academic activities and the extracurricular activities. This year I have had the privilege of serving as the president of the Student Government. This involvement has enabled me to work with a wide variety of people. I am grateful to A.C. for giving me the opportunity to make a lot of friends and gain a well-.-ounded education. Charles, a junior majoring in psy. and soc, has worl ed for the Augusta Police and Richmond County. He returned to college because he feels the police and their ad- ministrators need to better understand crime. Charles holds: I would like to be instrumental in upgrading law enforcement in Ga. Specifically I would like to see a bill passed to allow active law enforcement officers to attend state colleges at no cost. This would up- grade the education level of police, who generally have lo w education. It is important the police have the best education possible because they have the ability to effect so many lives. One of the most distinguished pre-med students is Mike Bryan. Mike received his B.S. from the University of Missouri at Rolla. Aside from his studies, Mike works in the Student Activities office and as a part-time nursing assistant. Mike states: The academic environment offers a tremen- dous opportunity not only to learn the important tech- nical peg points of a specific trade but also to devel- op socially. Although it may seem to do little to help initially get a job social skill will be a major compo- nent in advancement in that job. A.C. offers ways to fortify both academic and social skills. Jim has been at A.C. on and off for about 13 years. He has earned a degree in Psychology and Education and is taking writing courses currently. Jim often contributes to the Bell Ringer and through his delightful article the whole campus has come to know him and his family. Jim believes A.C. is a fabulous college and that one does not have to be working on a degree to go to college; people can learn just for the education. He holds that A.C. can give a person a good education in just about any field that a person would want. Joy says: Do you recall your very first day as a college student? Everyone could distinctly categorize you as a freshman because you were con- stantly referring to your registration form and campus map. Being a transfer student, I dreaded that I would be categorized as a freshman for a second time. Fortunately, thanks to the layout of the A.C. campus, the orientation, and the assistance of fellow students, I never had to use my campus map. Stevi compares the two schools by recalling: At U.K. the faculty never knew anyone ' s name, you were just your social security number, and the campus was so large that you h ad to ride a bus from class to class. A.C. has been like a breath of fresh air, everyone is important here and the campus is compact enought to be able to walk from class to class, and besides I much prefer ' Stevi ' to 8042! Known for her wit, CarIa believes that you have to make things happen; she stated; If you love something set it free, if it does not come back, hunt It down and shoot it. Keith Kurham Nancy Dyer Freshmen 63 Meri Beth Gay John Goida Senior Julian Hymen has always been interersted in classical music, that is probably why he does such a great job as the late afternoon disc joci ey at WAGG, the college ' s public radio station. Julian is a sociology major and is very active in community social research projects. He is also an outdoorsman, camping and owning his own small fishing company. Regarding the radio station, Julian holds: People don ' t realize what a treasure the station is, it is a vital asset — a special gift. The station has great potential but too few l now about it and support it, I only hope that it can survive and grow to be an important part of the Arts in Augusta. Ashley Golden 64 Freshmen ... Dwayne believes It is impor- tant for students to become involved in extracurricu- lar activities because it relieves the stress of academ- ics. In college you have to learn more than book- smarts — you need to develop common sense and social grace which can be acquired through the so- cial atmosphere of planned student recreational ac- tivities. What we need is more student participation in planned activities; these programs are paid for through the student activities fee that each student pays so see your student activities fees in action and come have some fun. The A.C. Men ' s Basketball team improved remark- ably over last season ' s performance, producing their best winning season since 1981. They defeated Mer- cer, Georgia State, and Georgia Southern — three of the best teams in Division I of the TAG Conference. They also surprised many when, after being picked to finish sixth in the Big South Tournament, they finished second. Many new players, orginally consid- ered a weakness, were in fact a strength, helping to improve the teams overall rebounding, playing inside the opponent ' s defense, and providing good height in the center. If most of the players return next year, this team could have an excellent season ahead. The Women ' s Basketball team, like the Men ' s team, had a surprise or two as part of an improved performance this season. They shocked third-ranked Georgia Southwestern with a 63-62 victory and defeated Arm- strong State at the Homecoming. They fin- ished the season with equal wins and losses in both the general record and regional re- cord. Women ' s Basketball 77 LADY JAGS STRUT THEIR STUFF! 78 Women ' s Basketball Women ' s Basketball 79 The A.C. Baseball team finished a win- ning season this year, a season that went very well despite a few early losses. The Jags faltered a little as the season wound down due to tough op- ponents like Georgia Tech, Clemson and Mercer. The team did however place third out of eight teams in the Big South Tournament, which was hosted by Augusta College. 80 BASEBALL BASEBALL TEAM PLACES 3rd IN BIG SOUTH Members of the Team; Mark Bennett, Keith Reese, Tony Miller, Ken Morgan, Donnie Poteet, Frank Moore, Larry McKinney, Mike Austin. Barry Bell, Kevin Green, Stuart Chester, Johnny Pennington, Scott Rapp, David Griffin, Daniel Martin, Collin Cas- sedy, Roger Parham, Trent Mercer, Tracy Durand, David Long, Darren Newman, Jeff Hodson, and Johnny Maybery. BASEBALL 81 SOFTBALL: AN IMPRESSIVE SEASON One of the teams that managed to put to- gether a winning season is the women ' s soft- ball team. Under the direction of Coach Lowell Barnhardt, the Lady Jags have made strong progress in their performance, de- feating such powers as Georgia Southern and Mercer. Mercer handed the Jags a 9-10 defeat but were later trounced by the Jags by a 21-8 score. Coach Barnhardt says of the Jags, The team has adjusted well to the fast pitch game. We aren ' t a power hitting team, but we do make contact with the ball. Our biggest strength was our defense. I think our players had the best gloves and throwing arms of any team we had faced. - - Players (in alphabetical order): Martina Anderson, Maggie Brown, Mary Chavous, Leigh Ann Martin, Moe McCor- mick, Susan McDowell, Sheri Morgan, Angie Newman, Debbie Osterhoudt, Pam Peterson, Susan Rhoden, Janet Walden, and Lisa White. 82 SOFTBALL SOFTBALL 83 AUGUSTA COLLEGE SOCCER TEAM — WORKING HARD AND MAKING GAINS! ibd ' Although they did not have a winning record this year, the A.C. soccer team did mal e impressive strides. Hob- bled by player losses due to academic ineligibilities and non-returning players, the Jags nevertheless were very competitive against tough competition and a rugged schedule. They developed many dimensions of their team, and look forward to more recruits to complement the team. 84 Soccer Front row (left to right): Rob Demartinez, Doug Star- zee, Brian Hatch, Chris Taylor, Jose Pumarego, Ben Amporful. Soccer 85 SWIM TEAM HAS BRIGHT STARS! The Men ' s and Women ' s Swinnming teams had problems in team competition, but managed to provide bright stars. Among the best was fresh- man Suzanne Johnson, who finished first in two races at the women ' s team ' s last meet. Su- zanne and the rest of the women ' s team will carry on next season. 86 SWIM TEAM Men ' s Swim Team: Tommy Northcutt, Brent Mikel, Brad Rollins, Phil Stol oe, and Tom Mason (assistant coacli). Women ' s Swim Team: Suzanne Marie Jolinson, Adrienne Horton, Mary Nisbet, Angela Heilig, Kelsey Kemple, and Julie Miscliel. SWIM TEAM 87 GOLF TEAM SWINGS INTO ACTION J Although the team was composed of mostly new players, the A.C. golf team finished an impressive season, highlighted by their second win of the Big South Tournament championship. Coach Ernie Langford was named Big South Coach-of-the-Year, and freshman Taylor Smith, along with teammates Roger Rowland and David McGowan, were selected to the All- Conference squad. Next year, a team with experience gained from this past year and a tournament win will have a dazzling season. 88 GOLF Golf Team: Taylor Smith, Brad Adams, Roger Rowland, David McGowan, Brian Hodgson, Tripp Bowden, Dave Eby, Clay Bennett, and Sam Mays. Pic- tured Golf team and friends. GOLF 89 TENNIS TEAM STRUGGLES The women ' s tennis team, against very tougin competition all season managed to close out the season with wins against Armstrong State and Georgia. Such competition came because of the move to the NCAA ' s Division I — a situation common to virtually every team on campus. Meanwhile, the men ' s team competed under much the same cirumstances as the women ' s team and likewise had difficulties Still, with all the problems, both teams will be better prepared for next season. 90 TENNIS Men ' s Team member: Mark Beasly, Chris Skelton, Deac Heilig, Mark Randall, Joe Hamilton, Kevin Cot- ter, Kelly Crandall, Ronnie Wilcauskas, and Patrick Hayes (assistant coach). Women ' s Team members: Carol Zembiak, Patrice Oglesby, Denise Woodward, Susan Coleman, Jayne McElmurray, Mary Alice Mealing, and McCoy Williams (manager). TENNIS 91 CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HAVE THEIR BRIGHT MOMENTS! A.C. ' s Cross Country teams had a very produc- tive season this year. Neither teams placed very high in some meets, but there v ere some bright moments. The men ' s team won their meet out- right against Paine College, while the women ' s team had some members selected to the Geor- gia All-State team and to qualify for the state meet. Both teams should improve remarkably next year. Men ' s team; Andy Tisdale, Dennis McBride, Stephen Crutchfield, David Snapperman, Chris Everly, Tim Con- way, Coach Larry Wall. Not pictured: Pete Salter, and Joe McElmurray. CROSS-COUNTRY 93 VOLLEYBALL RETURNS TO AUGUSTA COLLEGE Under first-year coach Joanne Rowe, women ' s volleyball made its return to Augusta College. The team did not win many games, but worked hard laying the groundwork for future seasons by build- ing better teamwork and gaining experience. They did remarkably well against rivals like Paine Col- lege, Campbell University, Erskine College and South Carolina State. The future will not be easy for these Lady Jags, but they have the potential to make it a brighter one. O ft A 94 VOLLEYBALL RIFLE TEAM SHOWS SHOOTING SKILLS Rifle Team (front row); Sidney Raper, Ronald Cliburn, Olin Goodhue, Lora- donna Norris Major Stewart Cannon was coacfi (back) The A.C. rifle team practiced their shooting skills this year and competed in Louisiana against nearly 18 other colleges. Each team member participated in matches requiring them to shoot 36 rounds at a bullseye target: 10 in a lying position, 10 in a kneeling position, and 10 in a standing position. They used .22- caliber rifles and practiced at the Academy of Richmond County ' s shooting facilities. Nearly all of the team members were in ROTC, so the experience helped greatly. RIFLE TEAM 95 ENTHUSIASTIC CHEERLEADERS REFLECT TEAM SPIRIT! Tirelessly supporting many of Augusta College ' s athle- tic teams, the Jaguar Cheerleaders are a reflection of the team spirit that pervades Augusta College. Lurelia Moss, their coach, believes they did an excellent job and were an important factor in many vi ins by our teams. They will continue to show the enthusiasm and support of the college through their lively cheerleading. Top (left to right): Angela Vining, Donna Felberg, Kelley Cross.
