It has fourteen academic departments, each headed by a chairman. Augusta College, at this time has a full-time teaching staff of approxi- mately one hundred and thirty persons. Majors are offered in a number of areas and the number is continually growing. Under the Bachelor of Arts degree, majors are offered in elementary educat- tion, English, French, history, music, political sci- ence, psychology, Spanish, and sociology. Under the Bachelor of Science degree, majors are offered in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. A Bachelor of Science in Education is offered with a major in special education. A Bachelor of Business Administration degree is offered. Minors may be selected from eighteen areas. Associate degrees in criminal justice and nursing are also now offered at Augusta College. Bowsher, Chairman I NURSING Louise D. Bryant, Chairman Augusta College is not standing still. It is continually growing and expanding, changing and improving, both physically and academically. Physically, the col- lege has been acquiring property surrounding the campus which is being used in various ways. Work has begun on the last of the six warehouse buildings to provide additional office and classroom space. A cof- fee house is now open on campus. Academically, departments are expanding, courses are being added and the departments of Education and Business Administration are offering Masters programs. 90 Augusta College is growing, perhaps slowly at times, but it is growing. And as it grows it offers you more in academics, in athletics, in entertainment, and in organizations. ;i N. - ' •. Simon Sociology: Marlyn C. Wilson The Fort Gordon Resident Center Harry Thompson, Coordinator Augusta College has sixteen chartered organizations, both social and service. During this year, most of these groups have been very active. Each group has sponsored a variety of projects which are beneficial to them- selves, the college, and the community as well. From their work, a number of activities have been presented for the enjoyment of the entire student population. Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, we do not have pic- tures of most of the organizations or their accomplishments. Those we did acquire through some probable mis- take, we now present. • jr  W-. s A good many of the pictures tak- en of students never go into the yearbool( simply because they do not fit into any certain section. Sometimes these are the most interesting or appealing pictures. This time we have made a section for just those photographs, the A.C. students as they are caught by the camera on campus or else- where. Besides we needed some- thing to fill up space. 4 There is a time when you get into something that turns out to be nothing but has- sles, so many hassles that you only want to forget it, leave it, get away in any way that you can. But you know that the project has to be completed and it is entirely up to you to follow it to its finish. You can possibly re- cruit a good friend to help you with the work, but the burden remains in your mind only. When it is finally over, you get no feeling of satisfaction, no gratitude. The only thing you find is RELIEF. % ▼ ' ' «   . 166 A large segment of the student population of Au- gusta College is married. A portion of those who are married also have children. Probably out of necess- ity, these students from time to time were seen bringing their children to school with them. With the beginning of the Day Care Service offered on campus, and other programs, more and more scenes such as these were noticed on campus. k L ' ! jl ' 4 ' ' 2,.£-.m z. JtK Rock ' n ' Roll 172 Maybe they didn ' t know about sophistication in the fifties, but they itnew what cool was. Cool was a chrome grille and a convertible top, even if this combination appeared on an Edsel. In clothing, it was narrowness in lapels, ties, hat brims, pants legs, and cuffs. The spread collar was as short as could be and usually anchored down by button or pin. Perhaps the best cultural flashback to the fifties is the list of the Top Ten songs. Heart- throb Eddie Fisher had Anytime , Johnny Ray had Cry , the Four Aces pleaded Tell Me Why , Don Cornell insisted I ' m Yours , and Al Marti- no ' s gigantic voice encompased Here in My Heart . But off in the wings rock ' n ' roll was being born with a zinger called Shboom by the Crew Cuts; and in 1955, the trend was assured, Billy Haley sang Rock Around the Clock and Ed Sullivan finally relented and booked Elvis for three appearances on his show. As you may have noticed, we have returned to elegance. Button-down, white shirts, narrow belts, bow ties, cardigans, cuffs, and spectator shoes are all back. In music we are be-bopping to thee sounds of Sha- Na-Na, Vince Vance, and Chuck Ber- ry.
