OUR HISTORICAL CAMPUS Augusta College occupies the site of the old Arsenal. In 1861 the Federal Arsenal was sur- rendered to the Independent Republic of Geor- gia. It had been an arsenal since 1827 and continued until its abandonment in 1955. Our campus contains Bellevue, the home of Freeman Walker, now the offices of the Stu- dent Publications. In 1957 the college, then the Junior College of Augusta, moved here from the Academy of Richmond Count}-. These markers erected by the Georgia Historical Commission ser ' e to remind students and visitors of our history.

CORDLE DAY June 2nd, 1961 At the end of the Spring Quarter 1961, one of Augusta Col- lege ' s most loved profes- sors retired from work. Mr. Cordle had taught at Augusta College for thiry-five years. Earlier the faculty had given him and Mrs. Cordle a banquet. At the banquet, Mr. Wallace and Mr. Galloway presented an interesting and amusing series of slides in a pro- gram devoted to the Cor- dle ' s life history. June 2nd was declared Cordle Day and the historian was feted by the Alumni Association. A buffet dinner was given in his honor on the campus. A vast number of his friends attended and speeches were made by several of his former students and associates including Dr. Hervey M. Cleckley and Mr. George Forbes. Mr. Cor- dle was presented with a check and Mrs. Cordle was the recipient of a floral arrangement. 17
