We feel that the Greek quotation, which, as you know, comes from a speech of Agamemnon ' s to Clytaemnestra, and means God from afar looks graciously upon a gentle master, might so easily have been especially written for you. It is so very apt, and most appropriate. KITE TABLE OF TENTS PAGE NO. DEDICATION 4 GK. DUATION 1961 10 CORDLE DAY 1 SOPHOMORE PORTRAITS - -. 31 FRESHMAN PORTRAITS .... 6? In 1861 the Federal Arsenal was sur- rendered to the Independent Republic of Geor- gia. It had been an arsenal since 1827 and continued until its abandonment in 1955. Our campus contains Bellevue, the home of Freeman Walker, now the offices of the Stu- dent Publications. In 1957 the college, then the Junior College of Augusta, moved here from the Academy of Richmond Count}-. These markers erected by the Georgia Historical Commission ser ' e to remind students and visitors of our history. CORDLE DAY June 2nd, 1961 At the end of the Spring Quarter 1961, one of Augusta Col- lege ' s most loved profes- sors retired from work. Mr. Cordle had taught at Augusta College for thiry-five years. Earlier the faculty had given him and Mrs. Cordle a banquet. At the banquet, Mr. Wallace and Mr. Galloway presented an interesting and amusing series of slides in a pro- gram devoted to the Cor- dle ' s life history. June 2nd was declared Cordle Day and the historian was feted by the Alumni Association. A buffet dinner was given in his honor on the campus. A vast number of his friends attended and speeches were made by several of his former students and associates including Dr. Hervey M. Cleckley and Mr. George Forbes. Mr. Cor- dle was presented with a check and Mrs. Cordle was the recipient of a floral arrangement. 17 CORDLE DAY The arrival of the guests Lining up at the buffet table CORDLE DAY Scenes at the dinner 19 CORDLE DAY Dr. Hen ' q? DAY Kid ' s Day provided a lot of fun and strange sights on campus. Kids of all ages and sizes appeared and while a smaller percentage than usual participated and the entertain- ment was not up to the previous year ' s standard, those participating seemed to de- rive a lot of amusement from the proceed- ings. L-R in picture above — Rose Lee Dottie Duffie Barbara Hutcheson Brenda Johnson Nancy Jarrell Last summer the Business Club held a re- ception in which was a great success. It was attended by members of the faculty and administrative staff. 28 THE CHOIR ' S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM Handel ' s Messiah was given in St. John ' s Methodist Church by the College Choir at Christmas. A large congregation was present and many extra chairs had to be placed in the aisles and balcony. Dr. Rockholt and the choir received many congratulations on their fine performance. 29 rHOrR The College Choir with their director, Dr. Preston Rockholt. In the Spring of 196I the choir made a successful tour to New Orleans and this year the choir toured Florida — another great success. SOPHOMORES JACKIE AYERS ALLEN ADAMS KAY AGERTON Y JAMES E. Tony had ar- rived in this country only a few days pre -iously, having come from Panama. He quickly adjusted himself to his new sur- roundings and different environment and is now one of the most popular students in College. 156 REGISTRATION One of the necessary evils of col- lege life is registration. At our col- lege the waiting around at the vari- ous steps, always a bone of con- tention among the students, has been cut to an absolute minimum. What delays there are usually hap- pen because of the students them- selves. There are always those with no pens or pencils, and those who cannot make up their minds which courses to take. 157 REGISTRATION 158 Consulting with advisors REGISTRATION Arranging schedules 159 REGISTRATION Final stage — paying fees. 160 :©t P m WHITE COLUMNS PRESENTS superlative: OF r 161 BEA KUHLKE I6Z FAYE BUSSEY 163 ' .y:- ' ' ' f:.i - . ,- i.
