HISTORIC AUGUSTA In 1910, The Academy of Richmond County, under the Board of Education of Richmond County, added a year of college and commercial work to the standard four-year high school program. The Junior College of Augusta was founded on August 15, 1925, to meet the need for a standard junior college in the Augusta area. Operations started with the 1926-27 session in what was at that time the new Academy Building. The college has been fully accredited since its beginning in 1926. The first sophomore class graduated in the spring of 1927. After the closing of the Augusta Arsenal in December of 1955, the County Board of Education made application for the western section of the property for educational purposes. On February 12, 1957, a deed was received conveying 38.98 acres of land and thirty-four buildings. On February ' 18, 1957, a deed to an additional 5.65 acres was received. The Junior College of Augusta opened on its new campus in September, 1957. During the year, the Board of Education applied to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia for the incorpora- tion of The Junior College of Augusta into the University System as a State-supported institution. The application was approved in June, 1958, with the Board of Regents assuming control on September 1, 1958. The name of the college was changed to Augusta College. On March 17, 1959, 15.59 acres of former Augusta Arsenal property containing nine large brick build- ings were deeded to the Regents of the University System. On June 1, 1959, the Augusta College assumed responsibility for the evening freshman and sophomore course work which had previously been offered by the Augusta Center of the University of Georgia as extension course work.
