m m Augusta Christian School, Martinez, Georgia Presents “The Best Years of Our Lives” Programme Table of Contents 1 Seniors of 1981 5 Faculty Staff 17 High School 17 High School 23 Athletics 33 Special Events-Clubs 53 Elementary 63 Day Care 89 Advertisements 101 Judges 5:11 . there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord High School Dedication This year the 1980-81 Sword staff dedicates the yearbook to a most worthy recipient. Ever since she started working here, she has always had an active interest in the school. She has been a very good teacher, who would take the time to help students personally. She has been a friend and a good listener to many a student who has come to her with prob- lems. She has been sponsor and coordinator of many events in which she has worked over and above the call of duty to present them successfully. She has shown how active and rewarding a Christian life can be. This year, we lovingly dedicate the high school portion to Mrs. Keni Wiltshire and wish her the best of luck in her future plans. Mrs. Keni Wiltshire “This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.” I Timothy 3:1. “Seekest thou great things for thyself? Seek them not.” Jeremiah 45:5. Aspiration to leadership is an honorable ambition but will not always be accepted by all Christians without a measure of reservation. Several years ago our school needed a leader; we were seeking a lady to become the Vice-Principal of our elementary school. Through careful prayer and interviews, the Lord settled our minds to select Mrs. Pat Goodwin. Why? Was it because of her experience-no; because of her credentials-no; because of her seeking the position-no. As important as these qualities are, we considered something greater. We selected Mrs. Goodwin because she realized the two passages at the head of this tribute. She desired to be effective in the service of the Lord and realized the high potential of her life. Mrs. Goodwin, through the years, has proved her true aspiration. Never have her ambitions been self-centered; never “great things for thyself’ but always pointedly exposed and stigmatized unworthy motivation. For this she has earned the respect and love from parents, students, faculty, staff and particularly the board of directors and administration of Augusta Christian Schools. The 1980-81 Yearbook Staff proudly dedicates the elementary portion of this book to Mrs. Pat Goodwin, Elementary Principal. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Mr Charlie B. Whitney President Finance Committee Chairman It is a real privilege to serve on the Board of Directors of Augusta Christian Schools. Phis school has always placed the laird first and the service that we have rendered to the school has been rendered to the Lord Jesus Christ with the purpose of winning young lives to Him. and helping those who know Him to grow in grace and the knowledge of Him. The school's every effort has been first to emphasize the basis of salvation, then to give each young person the best academic teaching that he could find anywhere. These can prepare each one for a life that will honor the laird and make each an outstanding citizen for our country which has forgotten the living God. The greatest asset of our nation is the youth of our land. We older folks should make every effort to give them a perspective of putting first things first. First, of course, is salvation, then a Christian education with eyes fixed upon the Lord Jesus. Thus America could return to the days in which it recognized the living God as its Head and the things of the world as secondary. Your boardand faculty hope the parents of the school will join with us in our efforts and desires and that our young people will be brought into this sort of thinking. As a result, the problems of our land decisions of worldliness and sins-could be healed. This school was born from the Lord, has been maintained by Him. received every need supplied by Him. and is blessed in many unusual ways by Him. To us that’s the reason it is His and is called a miracle school. Mrs. Miriam Bryngelson Secretary Publicity Committee Chairman Mr Eugene Gojda Athletics Committee Booster Club Mr. Kobert D. But too many times we seem to leave Him out of our lives except when we get into a jam and have no other choice. Sure we should be realistic in life, but we also need to take the attitude of an optimistic Christian. In other words, the contrast is between having a carnal negative viewpoint or having a positive Christian view. Obedience to God and striving to be a more informed, mature and committed Christian should be our goal. When our priorities are straight, we can deal with our Christian growth and negativism in a constructive manner. Education is concerned with teaching general principles that can be applied to the situations of life. Without the Christian viewpoint, our perspective is biased. Seeking after the knowledge of God changes our outlook and makes us aware of different values which are life-changing. God’s thoughts become a part of our being when one is attuned to the Person of the Holy Spirit and His work in our life. Having a personal relationship with God means prayer and Bible study have a significant place budgeted in one’s life. What is the answer to our needs? We need to live our life as a witness of God’s love for all mankind. Our actions and viewpoints Mr. Charles B. should have Christ as their focus point. Eternal joy, happiness and peace are the end results of a life dedicated to Christ. Thus, Augusta Christian School will continue to give their students a quality Chris- tian education in addition to a strong well-rounded academic envi- ronment that promotes the strengthening and renewing of the mind as demonstrated in the lives of our students. The “Big Red” newspaper staff worked very hard this year to bring to the staff and students news that was both informative and entertain- ing. Besides the usual sports, high school and elementary stories, students’ submissions, in- terviews and feature stories were published. I was pleased with the quality of the students’ writing this year, and I hope for an even better newspaper next year. Heather Wiltshire 4th Grade 62 RISING STARS Elementary School Elementary Vice Principal’s Message Mrs. Pat Goodwin This year has been one of many changes at Augusta Christian School; administrative changes, faculty changes, students coming and going, but one thing remains constant throughout, the pur- pose for which we were founded in 1958. That purpose being to give each and every student that comes through our doors all of the educational skills needed to build a meaningful and productive life for himself in the future, and to teach him the Scriptures so that he comes to know, love, and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. We are preparing these children not only for the future, but also for eternity. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) Train is the key word in this verse. Our children are trained in educational skills through examples and practice and so are they trained in spiritual things through examples and practice. They are loved, therefore, it is easier for them to love others. They are respected, therefore, they learn to respect others, and so it goes with the other spiritual qualities that we try to instill in the children. Abraham Lincoln once said of the child, “The fate of humanity is in his hands, teach him well ...” Augusta Christian School proposes to do just that; to teach and train each chold academical- ly, socially, physically, and spiritually, so that he can reach his fullest potential and fulfill God’s plan for his life. Only when we give all to Him can we find purpose in our lives through His direction. It took many years of growing to reach a decision to go where He would lead. I faced this four years ago when He told me to leave the retail business. I sought work in many areas and the doors were closed one after the other. A friend suggested I come to ACS as they needed help in the Day Care area. I started out working with the three-year olds and later was asked to take the position of Director. In August of 1981 I will have completed five years at ACS. When I stepped out in faith, He opened the door of opportunity for service. When we become a servant to others, God uses that service to glorify Himself. Many people have touched my life and I would like to thank each one that is a part of ACS now and those in the past that have contributed to the best years of my life. I pray that God will allow me to continue to serve Him and His people here at ACS. 89 K-3 Jayson Akridge Ben Ashley Christopher Berge Elizabeth Bibleheimer Phillip Cartledge Adam Cato Kathy Eberhart Douglas Epple Jeannie Fritz Dannielle Hart Enon Hopkins Richie Horton Kerensa Hunt Donny Kulangara Trenee Leverett Quincey Lewis TODDLERS Todd Barnes Heather Boyle Gregory Clark Ashley Copeland Mary Cushman Kerry Dycus Ashley Lyon Samantha Miles Amy Minick Wes Mobley Justin Morton Lisa Ray Mark Reeves Michael Scott Kelly Smith Mark Smith Nathan Strickland Roy Swann Lancy Taylor Melissa Widener NURSERY Penny Burke Aaron Cone Adam Cushman Katrina Flynn Chad Harpley Jamie Leverett Ryan McCall Derrick Natoli Allyson Perhonish Evan Pittman Corey Prince Shwetha Sathyanarayana Tyler Smith Travis Sperry Ashley Stanley 91 Richard A. 'CHRISTIAN ACAD A man of steel and velvet.” It has been well said that paper will be still and one can write anything on it. 1 am wondering why I should impose upon this perfectly good paper the words I am about to write. 1 write with no higher hopes than motivate the rooster at daybreak-1 do not expect to be appreciated or even tolerated, but I hope to awaken some. In some Christian circles today, like some people in our government, there are fearful tendencies to take a stand on Scriptural and national foundations. Many Christians today want to “blend” in with the world in order to “win” them. Many Christian schools attempt to “blend” and not “offend” the student by having them adhere to discipline and academic procedures in fear of “losing them.” There’s a fire in my bones-a woe in my heart, I care not whether you read or heed. I’m like my dog as he arouses at night to bark at a passing train. He does not hope that it will stop, or even slow down as it crosses the path of his life at a distance; nor does he imagine that all on that train have heard his voice and are meditating on his message; he only does what he knows he must do. I beg that I may bark at the train of your life; and afterward, you may go back to your sleep, if you can. My “bark” is simply stated. Don’t be a free-thinking. I’m my own authority, I’ve got a better way of doing it person. Learn how to respond to authority ip a cooperative way-not rationalizing that my human dignity is being violated. Watch out for the world’s fashions and humanistic ideas. Respond to authority and seek the happiness you try to attain by resisting it. Happiness doesn’t come from doing your own thing.
