Let's put this in order right off — there is no such thing as a typical Augsburg student. Some of us are lazy and irresponsi- ble. while others consider their studies to be a life-and-death affair. And there are some who've achieved a comfortable medium. There are rowdies and wallflowers, activists and apathetics. traditional and non-traditional. The ideal Augsburg student, however, can be briefly characterized. This student possesses the qualities of compassion, humor, responsibility and ambition in realistic amounts. He can be one of the “ever-smiling collegiates who finds that “all-nighters do. eventually, pay off. but his personality is not so banal. He's sincere when he smiles, and personally motivated when he studies. He may even carry his work farther than expected, because he cares about it. The questions this student asks! There are. of course, con- cerns about “What do I wear today? but a good portion of their time is spent contemplating Augsburg's identity crisis: Are we a party school? Is the liberal arts ideal even approach- ed here, or have we succumbed to the desire for economic security? is

And why can't the two co-exist? Is our claim as a liberal arts school a facade, masking what's become a vocational school? Why does Augsburg keep emphasizing its religious aspect? Most important, she asks what she can do to improve the school. Although intimidating problems and decisions await him — a job. career, family, nuclear war. pollution, government — this prototype is not so overwhelmed that he turns away. Instead, he uses his education as a resource to prepare him for the future. And the ideal Auggie recognizes her influence upon the reliability of this resource. She sees that students have the poten- tial to adapt Augsburg to their own needs. In the face of many dif- fering ideas about this need,” she actively defends her own. There is no reason to believe this ideal student can exist only on paper. Given the opportunities of our school and community and backgrounds, rowdies, wallflowers, activists, and apathetics. 0 traditional and non are fully capable of working closer to this . model.
