Chapel Choir has grown in popularity and size. Meeting every Monday night in old main chapel, the choir prepares for their participation in occasional eucharists and chapels. The Music Therapy Club plays an important role in the education and social life of Music Therapy students. Meetings are held monthly and vary from disco lessons to a demonstration on using music with deaf children. Major events for the Club included a presentation at the music department's performance workshop, and a Valentine’s Day Carnation sale. Money from the annual fund raiser is used to (rase the costs of students attending the Regional Conference. This year the Club adopted a constitution and was recognized by the student senate. It all relates to publicity and coverage — the before and after. What is significant? What might be interesting? Who will make the most noise if unable to cover an event? We were quick to learn that significant news does not flow from this college community on a regular basis. We accepted the challenge and have taken pride in being the backbone of communications at Augsburg. Larry Couture Editor-in-Chief ECHO STAFF: Larry Couture. Mike Lundeen. Rob Tomalka. Roald Saternen. Like the past year's Homecoming was a week full of events highlighted by a unique Augsburg tradition — The Smorgasbord. The smorgasbord being of Swedish-Norwegian heritage signifies Augsburg's Scandanavian roots. Because of the? large amounts of food prepared (150 lbs. of fish. 200 lbs. roast beef, and 80 lbs. of ham to name some.) the food service staff is especially busy. On the average each individual spent 13 to 14 hours overtime in preparation and serving. The Smorgasbord was well attended and definitely worth the wait. Great music at the talent show. Desert Skies. This year the talent show was M.C.'d by Boh Gardner and David Cherwin. The show consisted of skits, music, and humor. The music was exceptionally well done, the skits sometimes funny, and the humor... well it made the Augsburg crowd laugh. Sonic of the talent show musicians. | The faculty-staff auction, a tradition. I 1 The M.C.'s wait for their cue. I The faculty staff auction went well this year with everything from meals, vacations, plants, and numerous other stuff on sale to the highest bidder. The auction is a great chance to see faculty and staff members outside of their everyday duties, and the things for sale often give students a glimpse into their personalities and talents. 35 atcohol forutn A new party policy was discussed in a student body alcohol policy forum held in the College Center during Oct. Arranged by the Alcohol Ad Hoc Committee of the Student Senate, the forum brought out developing plans for a new campus alcohol policy. The new policy contained freedoms and restrictions. The programs during the day offered many insights into the land of China. During the week Chinese art was on exhibit, chapel service dealt with themes on China, and Pres. Anderson spoke on missionary work in China. 30 I Spear dance'' done bv Susan Ch Guthrie Day at Augsburg proved to be an interesting one for theater buffs. During the day people from the Guthrie held workshops and lectures on topics such as; costume, set design, production, and writing. The Guthrie also held a costume show in the College Center. New York with a pair of lovers and the woman's protecting uncle who sends her to New York City. Dolly Levi then steps into the picture and the plot thickens. The acting was superb, and was beautifully complemented by the well designed and constructed set. Guest director Warren Bowles led the cast through a successful production as did Micheal Beary set designer. A large amount of the success was due to the ability of the cast and technical crew to work well together. The play was well received by the Augsburg community. 3$ Matchmaker was definitely one of Augsburg’s greatest Dramatic successes. The Augsburg Community looks forward to more entertainment from its talented drama department. Ordering dinner at Harmonia Gardens. Our neighboring Mixed Blood theater company was kind enough to lend the Little Theater one of its talented young artists, Warren Bowles. 39 The Black Student Union of Augsburg College planned a month of activities in observance of Black 1 listory Month starting Feb. 12 and continuing till March 10. The month began with the raising of the black and green flag which symbolizes the black culture. The theme this year was “Unity — Let’s get it together . The BSU had two specific objectives for this year’s activities: To create the awareness of Black History in the Augsburg community, and to help the black population at Augsburg to redefine themselves with respect to their history. To achieve these objectives speakers on Black History. Gospel night. Talent night, and a film were planned. Ceamtna for The 1960’s inspired, among other things, a push to move formal education out of the classroom. A swing of the historical pendulum in the 1970’s has squelched that wide-spread passion for practical learning. Still, some liberal educators persist. Augsburg students had opportunity to participate in some of that formal learning this past spring. Joan Slater, director of student activities, and Linda Shrempp-Alberg. director of student life, put together a Learning for Living program modeled after similar mini-courses at the University of Minnesota. The classes offered were designed to meet the needs of the community at the present time, explained Shrempp-Alberg. We looked for courses that would be flexible, fun, and cheap — a way to do things you can't afford to take a class in, but would still like to dabble in. Course topics included such things as modern dance, camping, and ballet. 41 Bill Simenson solos on his trumpet. Ken 1 lolmen on the; saxaphone. | Pres. Anderson and L. B. Sateren. I will take her in spite of that. (I mean to have some fun out of this.) This year's spring play, done by the Augsburg Drama department, was The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni. The play was written in the commedia dell'arte style popular in Italy and France during the 17th and 18th centuries. The commedia dell’arte uses stock characters, meaning that they are typical characters in typical situations. The cast includes lovers, a miser, a doctor, and many more human types, extended to focus on their one outstanding characteristic. Julie Driver, the play’s director, said I'm tryirfg to do this show as a combination of Laurel and 1 lardy and Fellini (Italian film director), emphasizing the slapstick, the theater of the absurd, and all the bizarre, grotesque things in Fellini’s films. The play is a comedy, and it definitely was funny. The set was designed by Paul Sanrud. the costumes by Don Fiddler. Many interesting things came out of the trunks. Above Right: Augsburg hustles back and goalie Dick Bain displays his form. Below: Forwards Terry Brown and Mike Erickson provided much of the Auggie scoring punch. A few firsts were achieved in the; wake of a national championship team: the first team to go undefeated in the conference: the best overall record ever, 23-4-1; two goaltenders in the running for All-American honors; and a cheering section that reminded us that school spirit was not just something people talked about. But these firsts were extras on top of what is becoming a tradition. The Auggies captured a second straight Northland MIAC title, an unprecedented third straight MIAC title, and a fifth straight berth in the NAIA national tournament. Some people called it a “rebuilding year.” 91 Back row (I.-R): V. McIntyre. A. Johnson. C. Walker. J. James. C. McCan. D. Carlson. M. Lewis. D. Cleaver. P. Holm- quisl. J. Andrews. T. Carlson. This year's team achieved to a point where denying them recogni- tion was not possible. A fifth consecu- tive conference championship after a third consecutive season without a con- ference defeat. Two national champi- ons. Jeff Swenson and Scott Whirley. and a third place finish out of eighty- seven schools in the national meet held in Wheeling. West Virginia. Hundreds of dollars donated by students to help fly the team east, and two unprece- dented cover stories in the Echo. This is a team that will not be forgotten. It takes a special kind of closeness as a team to do well in wrestling, and it takes a lot of that closeness to excel at a national level. Coach Grygelko 100 Back row (1,-R): R. Jordan. M.
