Our president. Dr. Ikrnliard M. Chris- lerisen, took a six-months leave of absence in February to study abroad. Dr. and Mrs. Christensen and their two youngest (hiuphters resided mainly in Oslo, Norway, whi-re Dr. Christensen devoted his time to study at the university and library. He also visited some other prominent Euro- pean universities to further his project of studying the relation of culture and Chris- tianity. This was Dr. Christensen ' s first leave of absence from the campus since he began teaching here in 1930, with the ex- ception of one quarter of study in 1935. CHRISTENSEN, president of . ugsburg College and During his absence Dean Martin ( )uan- beck was the acting president. The scholastic and geographical boun- daries of Augsburg College expanded this year. The expansion existed mainly on paper, the result of years of careful plan- ning; but contracts have made portions of the plans conclusive. We ' re behind the expansion all the way — not just because the new campus will pro- vide an ideal Christian education, but be- cause through personal acquaintance we know and respect the ability and Christian devotion of our faculty and administration. .Ailint; prt idenl DEAN QUANBECK 100 ERNEST W. When a circle be- comes irregular in shape, it is no longer a circle. And as long as this shape does not form another common geometrical symbol, it has the quality of being dif- ferent. ' ' So it is nilh the development of each person- ality. The further one moves from standard reactions, the more he displays his individuality. We hope that this book reflects somewhat the pat- tern of Augsburg life through its members and scenes. The pattern is vague in places because its shape is con- stantly changing. Too. the word pattern ' implies re- production, and the actions of people cannot be repro- duced. But they can be reflected. That is the job of the camera. Placing this mirror, square by square, before you was an enjoyable experience, made so by those people who weren ' t afraid of work. I am grateful to Naomi, Bonnie. Audrey, and Bruce for encouragement, for will- ing hands and amiable spirits. To the others — this last page extends a handshake from me to all those who con- tributed their time and effort to bringing the 1959 AUGSBU RGIAN to the student body.
