The year 1971 will rapidly be- come almost indistinguishable from all that have gone before and will follow; but what time erases, this book will preserve the year as the students saw it at Oak wood High. What began in the hot first days of September has now become a full cycle with May commence- ment. In the classroom as well as on the court, students met Victory as well as defeat. As a group, we huddled together to face the new opportunities of tomorrow. As individuals, we kept our goals set high and looked forward to the future. For some, this was a first year of initiation; for others, a last year of preparation. - -: MEMORIES OF . . . Initiation . , G.A.A. Chess games FACULTY SUPERINTENDENT JAMES E. Treasurer; Cathy Dobbelaere, Treasurer; Benita Schlatter, President; Sharon Brown, Sec; Sandy Finneg an, News Reporter; Lynn Bradford, Vice-Pres. •■«3 e ' CLASS I am the fabulous Louis, god of the foreseeable future, although you may know me by my former name, Edward Wagner. At the moment, I am checking up on that tricky class of 1971 from Oakwood High School. They are bad enough now, so just imagine what they ' ll be like ten years from now. Stick around, and I ' ll tell you just what 1 mean. There ' s the first one now, Gary Wolfe. Due to his father ' s successful swine farm, Gary has gone on to bigger and better things; he is now the senior swine- herder in Tibet. Here ' s another 1971 Senior who is living in another country. With his great love of art, Delbert Densmore is painting outhouses and chicken coops in the hills of outer Mongolia . Quite a few Seniors have recently set new records. With his phenomenal ability in cross-country, Pepto Beisheim ran eighteen miles in two minutes and twelve sec- onds. When asked how he accomplished this feat, he replied that desire spurred him on. In this case, the desire to elude little Julia Rhodes his long-time sweetie! ! Another record-breaker is Sue Roughton, who, with her unusual talent of talking, alst) set a world ' s record. She talked forty-eight hours straight, non-stop, without saying anything, and still survived. Everyone remembers old Slick Buchman. He and Mr. Hughes have formed a partnership busting up stills in Kentucky. And then, of course, there is Wendy Nier and her horses. You ' ll be happy to hear she finally raised a prizewinning, thorough- bred, Ail-American mule. It won first prize in Hogback, Arkansas at the Hogback Horseshow. Way to go, Wendy, As you remember, there were always some trouble-makers in the great old class of ' 71. Well, it appears they ' re still at it; Steve ShoU, Dana Bair, Steve Keck, Manual Rhodes, and the brains of the gang, Jimmy Bradford, are now serving ten to twenty years in the State Pen for chicken rustling in southern Arkansas. They probably would have never been caught if it weren ' t for that great chicken-protector, Chicken Charlie, otherwise known as Susie Lange. Have you tuned in lately to the new replacement for the Flip Wilson show? It ' s called the Porter Brothers ' ho ur. Gary and Mike have as their guests this week, Sharon Brown and Cathy Dobbelaere fresh from their broadway performance of Hair ! Boy, these Seniors really have some weird jobs. Old Dan Hornish, now an ex- perienced explorer, is heading a safari in the swamps of Southern Florida, searching for the Rare Rambo bird, which was seen only once in the north. Here ' s another who must really like the out-of-doors. In the rolling hills of Dwirp, Utah, we find Ruth Ann Schick bear-hunting. Right by her side is her faithful Indian companion and part-time guide, Charles Lightning Legs McClure. Of course, there are always the few who succeeded. Ken Grimes, has a very important job as traffic safety advisor to the new president of the United States, none other than the honorable Steven Z. Sheppard. Hey, there is Ed Slone, sitting in his brand new office, as the new County Super- intendent of Schools. Looks like he ' s discussing something of great importance with the head of the English department, Mr. Randy Snow. Mr. Snow is following the foot- steps of his favorite teacher, Mr. Haggenjos, Three of the ' 71 Seniors have gone on to further their education. Lee Ann Adams, Edna Collins, and Linda Florence have recently gone on to college. They demon- strated last week for Women ' s Lib, but received severe action from the dean for re- fusing to shave for three weeks. PROPHECY . Oh, here are three classmates you ought to be proud of! ! Jeanne Dobbelaere, Paulette Copsey, and Sandy Finnegan are doing very well as nuns! They are in the order of St. Albert the Pratt. Barb Grindstaff, Connie Guyton, and Shirley Holt are also doing much good in their chosen field. They are working wonders as Peace Corps volunteers, helping the underprivileged people of Grover Hill . In the field of sports, the 1971 Seniors really outdid themselves. For example, in Fargo, North Dakota, there is a lot of excitement. It ' s the twenty-seventh annual Women ' s Oujie Board championship. The returning champions are Alberta Kirk and Laura Kochel. They are coached by the head Oujie of them all, Mike Klein, whose timeless motto is: It ' s not whether you win or lose, but whether or not you get caught cheating! ! Barb Mansfield is the winner of the Darla Ladd Memorial Alligator Wrestling Open. This tournament is dedicated to the memory of that fine sportswoman. Miss Darla Ladd, who was gummed to death by a 200-year-old alligator, when her fiance, Bob Merri- man, failed to protect her. Why, there ' s good old Bill Price. It seems he has gotten himself into the public relations business. He ' s given up the gas station and has just begun a marriage counsel- ing service. His first clients, or should I say victims, were Mr. Jim Lees and his new wife, the former Benita Schlatter. Everyone remembers little Becky Matson. She surprised everyone when she chose her lifetime career . Dressed in a pink chiffon bikini, she appears as a Go-Go Girl in the new discotheque owned by those two foot- ball greats, Don Heller and Joe Namath . . . Joe who??? Well, there ' s someone I ' ve been keeping my eye open for. Following in the tra- dition of his ancestor, for whom he was named, Lynn, Boone Bradford was blazing trails in Kentucky. Unfortunately, he was arrested for chopping down trees in the Winnahuckett State Park by the first woman forest rangers, Diana Noble and Marilyn Gerken . Here ' s a surprise, too. As of next week. Gene Griffith will be known as the Reverend Eugene Griffith. Yes, it ' s true, he ' s taken the final step. But it seems he ' ll have to get his hair cut just a little before he can be ordained, and Rick Bidlack and Bob Myers have volunteered for the job. They own a new barber shop in London called the Butch Boutique . And last, but not least, there is Mrs. Allen Beemer. She and her husband have been on a world tour, giving their special performance. The grand finale of their act is when Sandy rolls herself into a little ball and Allen stuffs her into an empty Pepsi bottle. They haven ' t figured out a way to get her out yet, but Allen doesn ' t seem to mind too much. He says it saves paying room and board for two. Well, it looks as though I ' ve seen all there is to see of the mighty 1971 Senior Class. But before I go back into the future where I belong, I leave you with just one word of warning. We may be back great Senior classes don ' t just leave, they linger on and on and on ! ! !
