' 67 MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS OAKLEAF Published by the Senior Class of the Auglaize -Brown Local School Oakwood, Ohio Susan Grindstaff Co-editor Sheila Lawson Co-editor Nancy Meeks Business Manager CONTENTS COAT OF ARMS for OAKWOOD HIGH SCHOOL This year the L. G. Balfour Company designed a Coat of Arms especially for our school. The lower half of the Coat of Arms is made in the shape of a SHIELD. This Shield stands for the DEFENSE of our school and also encompasses the words: TRUTH --HONOR --INTEGRITY. The Shield together with these inspir- ing words gives the school a Coat of Arms with deep meaning. Analyze these words and try to fit each one ot these into your everyday life. Inside the Shield are symbols which illustrate goals in daily life, activities within your school and ideas for the future. The ATOMIC SYMBOL stands for the FAST AGE m which we are now living. Next to it is the WINGED FOOT denoting PROGRESS for you and your school as well as all the people in our community. This Fast World is based on progress so it is fitting this symbol be included. The MUSIC LYRE illustrates all the fine organizations within our school and the high quality which they stand for. The OPEN BOOK and KEY are self-explanatory. With the book used as a source of knowledge, this will eventually open many doors of successful ventures to you. The LAMP OF KNOWLEDGE stands on top, bold and courageous, signifying ACHIEVEMENT in the goals set for below. The BOBCAT protects the Shield and the name of the school and keeps all who wear this Coat of Arms always striving to reach for something just a little bit better than they now have. mm .vi ' .ti ! A SIMULATED SPACE FLIGHT On Friday, May 5, 1967, three freshmen boys, Paul Grindstaff, Jerry Burt and Dick Brewer, entered their homemade space rocket on the school lawn. They spent the week-end in the capsule going through the test and experiences of the real astronauts, except flying in space. Their spacecraft never left the ground. During the flight a ground crew consisting of Leo Brown, Lynn Parrish, Bud Dobbelaere, and Roger Sahf- fer kept a record of each thing the astronauts did. Their blood pressure and pulse were taken every forty- five minutes. Their diet consisted of baby food, Hi-C drinks and metrecal. On Sunday, May 8, they splashed-down with a big crowd present to greet them. This project was headed by Mr. Tom Gaus, their general science teacher. DISTRICT CHAMPS REGIONAL RUNNER-UP The baseball team this year has done something no other baseball team from Oakwood has done; they went to the regional finals in the tournament. Going into the tournament the team had not won a game, a record of 0-5. Once the tournament games started so did the winning streak. The team beat Paulding in the first game of the tournament, played at Oakwood, by a score of 5-3. In the second game they beat Lincolnview 8-7. The final game at Oakwood gave the team another victory over Continental 4-2, entitling the team to go to the district at Kalida. In the district games the team defeated Crestview 4-0 and Deshler 6-5, in eight innings, taking them into the regionals at Deshler. In the first game of the regionals the team defeated Old Fort 7-4. The sec- ond is where the team met defeat. Edon beat Oakwood by a score of 9-2. Indeed the team and Coach Snow deserve all the congratulations they can get. This was the greatest accomplish- ment any of Oakwood ' s baseball teams has achieved and is a challenge to the future teams. TRACK TEAM The track team, coached by Mr. Krueckeberg, participated in five meets this year. During these meets two of our schools previous track records were broken and one was tied. Steve Switzer broke the previous high hurdles records of 19 seconds with 17.5 seconds and the previous low hurdles records of 18.6 seconds with 17.1 seconds. Doug Blair tied the 440 record of 58.4 seconds. In the Paulding County meet we had three firsts. Mike Renier placed first in both the shot put and disc throw.
