AUDUBON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL AUDUBON, IOWA Activities . . Athletics . . Music........ Organizations Academics . Seniors . . . T Memoriam What does one say about a man like Jim Hill? What can one say of a man who laughed and enjoyed the sound of that laughter, a man that took no greater joy from life than making someone smile, a man that shared a little bit of him- self with everyone he knew and yet kept his worries to himself? But should one say anything—or should they just re- member? N4 Activities Thursday Night’s Now hear this... I still like stuffed olives. Audubon’s own Michelangelo Thursday night’s blazing bonfire set AHS’s students afire with spirit, pep, and anticipation of the coming festivities. Audubon’s ten lively cheerleaders led the crowd in rous- ing school cheers. Co-captains Kirk McLaughlin and Mike Garber gave inspiring pep talks to a crowd of eager enthusi- asts and climaxed the evening by throwing the dummy into the blaze. The remainder of the evening was spent as students fran- tically tried to prepare their floats for tomorrow’s competi- tion. Enthusiasm But it looks like a birdcage to me. Shape up or I’ll let you do the whole float yourself. Hey Wheelers, you’re great. Why didn’t we buy colored napkins? Next! . . . Sets Off a Winning Spirit The Wheeler marching band led the ’67 Homecom- ing parade of queen candidates, floats, coaches, and cheerleaders. The parade was one of the longest AHS has ever had, as classes and clubs exhibited their ingenuity in creat- ing new ideas. The Lettermen’s Club created a new sen- sation with their version of the reclamation of the ol’ victory wagon. “The third time’s the charm” applied to the Seniors as they came up with the winning float, “We Nude We’d Win”. The Juniors received second followed by the Sophomores. Fortunately the rain stopped long enough for the AHS marching band to put on a halftime show to re- member. The Homecoming week was brought to a cli- max as Queen Vickie and her court, Janet McCune, Mar- lene Eddy, Judy Sornson, and Mary Weber were escor- ted on to the field by Dave McLaughlin, Greg Off, Fred Hansen, John Madsen, and Dave Abildtrup. Even the wet weather could not dampen the Wheel- er spirit as they came off the field with a 20-6 victory over the Sac City Indians. A night of music provided by the FORTUNES ended the 1967 AHS Homecoming festivities. is AUDUBON PRODUCE BROADWAY TAVERN “Web of Murder” Cast: S. Madison, M. Musfeldt, C. Smith, P. Klever, M. Along with the help of their new coach Bruce Adkins, the girls downed their opponents 22 times out of 25 starts. The most heartbreaking loss came when Manilla halted the Wheelerettes’ crusade to the state tournaments by a one- point defeat. Dona Fenske was the outstanding player of the 67-68 team. Besides numerous other honors, Dona was named to the fifth all-state team by the DBS MOINES REGISTER. The season held many honors for the Wheelerettes. They were invited to the Christmas tournament at Everly, where they played Everly, then the number one team in the state, and lost by only five points. They were also one of the eight girls’ teams invited to the State Coaches’ Clinic at Des Moines. Council Bluffs asked the girls to play at the open- ing of the Abraham Lincoln Field House. AHS also hosted the Southwest Iowa Coaches’ Clinic. Encouragement, enthusiasm, guidance, and protest are all part of the coach’s job. ROW ONE: K. Ahrendsen, co-captain ; S. Boust , G. Auditions were held and a select group of 52 were chosen for the a cappella choir. In September, twenty students formed five mixed quartets and prepared to audition for member- ship in the All State Festival Chorus to be held November 2. Octo- ber found two of our students members of that group. They were Colleen Davitt and Gary Madsen. The vocal department then joined forces with the band to present a Thanksgiving Day con- cert for the student body. They then presented a Christmas con- cert consisting of solos, small groups, and the mixed chorus. Also in December, the cast for MY FAIR LADY was chosen. On March 15th and 16th it was presented to an enthusiastic crowd. The long hours of practice had made the show a complete success. The department made a fine showing at state contest with 1 divi- sion I rating and 17 division II ratings. 68 CRAMER INSURANCE AGENCY MIXED CHORUS, ROW ONE: K. Olsen, C. Bald, C. Eddy, L. Renftle, L. F.T.A. experienced another busy year beginning with a picnic to welcome new members on September 11. Next came the District Convention on October 28, and on No- vember 3 F.T.A. juniors and seniors went to ISU, Ames, for Prospective Teacher’s Day. To end the year, F.T.A. members gave guided tours to prospective freshmen on the annual freshman orientation day. Members enjoy one of the bi-monthly meetings. 84 N.H.S. Rewards Scholars “The object of all chapters shall be to create an en- thusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of the second- ary schools of the nation.” This statement from the HANKBOOK OF NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY gives the main purpose of the N.H.S. organization. National Honor Society’s main activity was to spon- sor the annual “honors night”, which paid recognition to honor roll students as well as outstanding members of the music, art, and speech and drama departments. At the tapping ceremony held in May, 22 new mem- bers were initiated into N.H.S. Many students and parents attended honor’s night banquet. ROW ONE: Mrs. J. Zentmire, Speaker, K. Hofer, T. Flynn, C. Y-Teens also helped out at the Friendship Home by decorating their tree. Spring activities included the attendance of the Foreign Student Day in Des Moines, a “Li’l Abner” Twirp Dance, a style show and tea, and a bake sale. At the State Convention the following members received ratings: Pat Plagman, filing, I rating; Marcia Kuntzweiler, production typ- ing, 1 rating; Dianna Scott, spelling, II rating; and Verlene Jensen, office proficiency procedures, III rating. The chapter won the American Institute of Cooperation Award for Iowa for the 5th straight year, and they also won the gold award for Farm Safety at the State and National Contests. Besides the work of supervised farming programs which amounted to a gross income of $173,463.29 in 1967, the chapter found time for numerous other activities. These included three watermelon feeds, an alumni basketball game, a softball game, a volleyball game, a hayride, and two pizza parties. 91 This year’s Hi-Y Club, sponsored by Mr. Ken Hadley and Mr. Audley Korvar, attended many important conferences. In September the officers started off the year by attending the Leadership Training Conference at Lake Okoboji. During the year six members attended the Youth in Govern- ment Model Legislature in Des Moines where they passed bills of their own as representatives and senators. Members also attended the District Meeting and helped organize the spring Hi-Y coed conference in Shenandoah. The Hi-Y raised money by sponsoring the an- nual Hamburger Feed and also, by working at concessions. In the way of service projects, the club contributed to the Y.M.C.A. and World Service funds. I hope, as I’m sure Mr. Wilcox and the rest of the staff does, that each of you finds some of your own “good times” placed on these pages. After all, this is a book to help you remember. 1 hope it will bring back all the fun of this school year— MIKE Wheeler Backers: Half Pages Full Pages Audubon Bar Association D. R. Burgher, Inc.
