SUPERINTENDENT EARL MILLER AND PRINCIPAL DONALD MILLER Congratulations — Class of 1963 Here's to the success of each individual member of your class. You have proven your capabilities as a High School class. The future brings new problems and new challenges. I have faith in your meeting ob- stacles with determination so that your responsibility to society will be met with credit. As the memories of social events, athletic acti- vities, academic activities, classmates, underclass- men and faculty members flash through your mind, I hope there will be a small spot for a pleasant recollec- tion of your superintendent. My best wishes for a happy and successful life. Earl L. Miller Superintendent Congratulations to the Class of 1963 and the Wheeler staff for a fine record of a very successful year. During your high school years you have often been referred to as an outstanding class. Certain- ly your record in the class room and the school acti- vities have left examples and traditions which will benefit A.H.S. for years to come. But now you will be judged and will succeed as individuals rather than as a class. We have faith that these ninety separate records will also prove to be outstanding . Donald B. A. s supervised farming programs in 1962 gave them a gross income of $106, 950 with a net income per member of $889.64. The projects completed included work with swine, crops, poultry, dairy and beef cattle and many other projects. GET YOUR CAR CHECKED HERE! A Sma OPERATION STEAM CLEANER! In cooperative activities the F.F.A. has con- ducted 28 com test plots and bought and sold $5, 600 worth of such things as seed potatoes, garden seeds, farrowing stalls and similar items. Also they own a fanning mill, steam cleaners, movie projector and 15 similar items which are available for use in the com munity. The F.F.A. served the community in many ways. They placed 794 com harvest pledges and stickers, cut back com at six intersections, participated in 36 weed control projects, and 52 pest control projects. Another important community service was checking 200 cars for safety features. CONGRATULATIONS TO A GOOD LEADER Leadership is another important activity in F.F.A. At the State Conven- tion, in Sioux City, they earned Gold in Farm Electrification, Farm Safety, and the Chapter Exhibit. They earned Silver in Dairy, Extemporaneous Speaking, Farm Mechanics, Farm Poultry and Corn Harvest Safety. Howard Madsen and John Andersen received their Iowa Farmer Degrees. One mem- ber sang in the State Chorus. 24 Jim tomumiif MAKING THE GRADE An effort has been made this year to improve the scholastic standing of the chapter. They post an F.F.A. honor roll, maintain a chap- ter library and plan senior trips to colleges. Members are encouraged to enter all speech and farm proficiency contests. MONEY MAKERS The Earning and Saving projects netted this year over $5, 000.00. The main projects were seed potatoes sales, com production, garden seed sales, seed testing and the noon lunch counter. A new Junior Production Credit Association was formed to provide a source of credit to the members. CHOW TIME! The F.F.A. has fun, too. During the year they played volleyball with Exira, had a hayride, three watermelon feeds and num- erous chili suppers. FARM FACTS Public acceptance and support of the F.F.A. depends upon how well it is informed on the purposes, activities and accomplishments of the chapter and its members. They had several news articles and accompanying pic- tures in several local and three national papers. They participate in a weekly radio program and an occasional television program. 25 Sponsor, Mr. Hamilton. Officers: Sentinel, D. Whitehead; Secretary, A. Preul; President, N. New robes, THE MIKADO, and the Choir's Division I contest rating highlighted the vocal department's '62-'63 year. The three large groups started the year with a Thanksgiving concert for the student body. In December they presented a pops concert consisting of songs from contem- porary Broadway musicals. Thirty-five vocalists journeyed to Harlan in February and sang in the Quad-County Festival. At State Contest in Council Bluffs the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs received Division II ratings. The Choir's I rating was the first since 1954 as they sang Alleluja , Innsbruck , and Meadowlands . -Jk a o( Stmtjtk -V koh -Vk Uom oh Idadm LENA DOLLER English II, IV School Paper CARROLL FINNESTAD Bookkeeping Personal Typing General Business Typing II DAVID GALLAHER Physical Education Football Boys' Basketball AMBROSE DOLLER Industrial Arts Track CAROLINE ZENTMIRE Librarian Annual ISSA LUTFIYYA General Mathematics Algebra I DEAN SCHULTZ Typing I Shorthand I, II Business Law PATRICIA NYMAND Home Economics DONALD BEGGS Modern World Football Wrestling Golf KENNETH HADLEY Driver's Education Biology Girls' Basketball JAMES WILLIAMS Community Studies Football Boys Basketball ROBERT DIXON Advanced Algebra Plane Geometry Advanced Math JAMES HAMILTON Vocational Agriculture I, II, III, IV DEAN HENDRICKSEN Chemistry Physics DONALD KRISTENSEN Contemporary Problems Wrestling Athletic Director WENDELL ROLLINS American History Psychology JAMES HEITLAND Guidance Counselor e ™ JAMES HILL Art I, II ROBERT BOURNE Band DORIS BATESON Spanish I, II DORA SCHROEDTER English I Speech Plays ERNEST HEIM General Science Hdj Wajdjd! EDITOR'S EPITAPH As I sit here, I find myself at a loss for words. I hard for a person to describe the feeling that comes from woi ing on a yearbook. Finishing it is rather like losing your best frien I have more than enjoyed working on the Wheeler; I have loved it. I or hope that some part of the book might have captured a moment very special to y( Many people have worked long hours to make the '63 Wheeler a reality. A spe thanks to: The Staff. Here are your ideas and plans that have developed with hard work into a yearboc Mrs. Zentmire. Her wit kept us going when things didn't click; her wisdom guided us when c ideas got too wild. Mr. Gene O'Bryan and Mr. Don Jensen who patiently worked to capture the year's events in pictu- and meet deadlines. The businessmen who bought ads to make the printing of this book possible. Inter-Collegiate. Your co-operation has been wonderful. My last thanks to you, the students and faculty, for your interest and patience. You are the texture of school li Ruth Spehr -- Editor May each impression be a part of your collection of lasting memories.
