It has been a pleasure to know you and to work with you during the past year. May I wish the best to each of you in your future venture in life. “Congratulations to the “Wheeler” staff for a job well done. You can take real satisfaction for preserving memories of a successful 1960-61 school year. “Success” means many things. Most of all it means doing one’s best in the classroom. It means pride in your school and its many activities. It means getting along with others and willingness to make personal sacrifices for the good of others or the entire group. “From all of these viewpoints, the faculty and student body can take real pride for a successful year.” Principal of High School 6 Principal Donald Miller Board of Education SCHOOL BOARD-- Fred Sievers, Jr., Allan Jacobsen, Secretary; Earl Miller, Superintendent; Clifford Thompson, President; Emery Martinsen, R. With only one returningletterman, the 1961 team functioned with hustle and drive, bringing home some thrilling wins against Ida Grove and Pisgah, Although the Wheelerette loss to Exira in an overtime was the climax of the season, it also remains in Wheelerette history as the best team game played by this unit in the 1961 season. The strong point of this determined unit was the guards; Pat Crouse, Wanda Puck and Vernice Jensen. These three girls combined their talents into an unshakable defense which challenged the toughest teams in Southwest Iowa. These three also received All-State Honorable Mention. Two high points of the team's record were defeating Exira twice and having Dick Phillips named to the Midwest All-Conference First Team. From the five starting players, Dick Phillips, Danny Hilsabeck, and Dave Moreland will return next year to strengthen the team, so the graduating seniors will leave the team in the capable hands of a promising and experienced unit. Mary Nielsen, Maxine Schmidt, Carol Madsen; Activities, and classes. James Conrad, Lola Borkowski, Sherrin Schmidt; music and organizations. A yearbook is a wonderful thing, and editing the 61 WHEELER has been a rewarding experience. Behind the scenes, a tremendous amount of hard work goes on. Those who do the actual layouts and planning for them seldom receive sufficient credit. The staff this year has been a wonderful one with which to work. They worked especially hard to meet an early deadline so that for the first time, a colored picture could be included in the yearbook. Special appreciation goes to Mrs. Zentmire, whose untiring time, effort, and patience were given to each of us. To Don Jensen goes another “thanks” for the many hours spent on posing, taking, and producing the majority of the pictures. Thanks go to the faculty and administration for tolerating our pictu re-taking days and for not “blowing up ’ with our many class interruptions. To the businessmen we add another thanks, for without their 11 pages of ads, we would be unable to have our book printed. Inter-Collegiate deserves a great big “thanks” about here for the splendid co-operation and work they have done on the annual. Last--but by no means least, we add a note of thanks to the students, whose faces have filled over 100 pages of this book. Little d they know, sometimes, of the appreciation they receive because of their cooperation and suggestions. It is our hope, as you reach the last page of your book, that you have had captured for you the best memories of the ’60- 61 school year, and that you will treasure this book forever.
