From the beginning of school in the fall until the last freezing football game in the winter, the band makes its presence known at all home games and at various parades, both here in Audubon and in surrounding localities. In October the band competed, as it has in past years, in the state marching band contest. This year’s rating, a II, was earned at Greenfield. What basketball game would be complete without the accompanying tunes of the pep band? Responsible for this year’s musical background were: FRONT ROW: Doug Miller, John Sonksen, Sharlot Johansen, Donna Ruddy, Barb Nielsen, Rosanne Barentsen, Jane Murray, Sharon Willeson, Carolyn Mulford, Thelma Neilsen. BACK ROW: Don Mortensen, Mr. Place, Lyle Eiben, Bonnie Carlson, Gary Meshek. Patty Mendenhall, Shirley Zinke, Don Linn. Majorette of the 1958 Wheeler Band was Carolyn Brue. She was followed by two high-stepping twirlers, Barb Nielsen and Patti Miller, and three senior majorettes, Vernette Nissen, Deanna Schmidt, and Leota Winther. Bringing up the rear were LaVonne Clems en, Donis Krauel, and Kay Anderson, our flag-twirling marchers. Pep talks by Coach Williams and Bob Beck plus cheers for the football team set the pace for all high school and alumni. Friday was the big day as busy students hurried to put finishing touches on floats or the stage while awaiting the announcement of the king and queen. The trumpets sounded and the king and queen, Bob Hagglund and Barbara Grabill were crowned. Wheel eelers Witheveryoneina gay mood, the parade of handsome floats rolled down main street impressing all onlookers. Friday night at the Homecoming game the best floats were announced. A huge elephant, the Senior's float ranked first. Music provided by AHS Dance Band for the dance helped to end another Homecoming for Audubon. AHS Marching Band rounds the square a head of Homecoming parade. ' V Freshmen reveal their sentiments toward rival Tabor with this float. Elephant ain't a victory is the theme of the first prize winning senior float. Homecoming BOB HAGGLUND Horn ecoming Roy a It V The coronation took place on the stage beautifully decorated by the Pep Club in red and silver. Last year’s king, Dallas Bald, crowned Bob Hagglund as Homecoming King for 1958. Bob then placed the silver crown on the queen, Barbara Grabill. The queen’s court consisted of Judy Magnussen, Vitta Nelson, Vemette Nissen, and Deanna Schmidt. The king was surrounded by his court: Bob Beck, Chuck Gregersen, Byron Jensen, and Wayne Petersen. HOMECOMING, climax of the foot- ball season, was sponsored, decorated and enlivened by the members of the Pep Club. Through sales of candy and Pep Club enblems they earned money for decorations for the stage at the P.T. A. carnival. And, of course, during the football, basketball, and wrestling seasons, the Pep Club members worked at their most im- portant job, that of keeping school spirit awake and in action. This, they realized, started the cadence of a four-year march that would ter- minate for most of them in graduation. In their first year, the class of 1962 has exhibited great potential in several fields, music, athletics, and scholastic standing. Pictured above, along with two of their class sponsors, are the class-elected officers who led their class’s first-year activities: Cheryl Schmidt, treasurer; Mr. Stuck and Mr. Williams, sponsors; Roger Fett, vice-president; Mary Rasmussen, secre- tary; Rosemary Miller, president. Representing the class scholastically are the nine freshmen whose grades placed them on the first-sem- ester honor roll. They are: Vernice Jensen, Linda Winther, Carol Mortensen, Steven Lindholm, Jeanette Christiansen, Pat Merselis, Glenn Reinemund, Wava Tessman, LaDonna Swensen. Now better established in the routine of high school life, sophomores spent more time in the activities offered. Many members of the class of 1961 became strong and contributing parts of such activities as athletics, music, and speech, and promise to keep AHS well represented in the future. Leading the class in its work this year were; Mr. Lane, sponsor; Merrill Firebaugh, treasurer; Carol Madsen, president; Betty Jensen, secretary. Pictured below are the scholastic leaders of the sophomore class, the students on the first-semester honor roll: Rose Ann Jensen, Lola Borkowski, Bill Martinsen, VerIon Stone, Cal Parrott, Jane Arnold, Linda Northup. As the members of the junior class soon learned, the third year of high school is a busy one. Foremost on the list of activities of the class was the planning and preparation for the Junior-Senior Prom. The senior class tips its hat to the class of 1960 for its fine job in presenting an excellent prom. Leading the junior class as officers and sponsors this year were; (seated) Don Mortensen, treasurer; Halvor Sornson, vice-president; Norman Nissen, president; Kay Andersen, secretary; (standing) sponsors, Mr. Doller, Mr. Rollins, Miss Keith. Members of the class who made the scholastic honor roll the first semester were: Marilyn Petersen, Carolyn Brue, Janet Shoemaker, Mary Bowman, Bill Middleswart, Don Mortensen, Earl Barrett, Norman Nissen, Linda Miller, (standing) Halvor Sornsen, Dean UUerich, Denny King. Robert Place Director A.H.S. Concert Hand Receives 1” Rating The 1958-59 AHS Concert season has been one of activity and accomplishment for the band. Highest on the list of honors the band received this year is the Division “I” rating it brought home from state large groups contest. It had previously been more than a decade since this had been accomplished. The two num- bers presented at contest were “Morning, Noon, andNight,” by Von Suppe, and the “Coat of Arms” march, by George Kenny. In addition, the band presented two home concerts (one in December and one in March) and conducted an exchange of concerts with the Lake City Band. We congratulate the band and its very capable director, Robert Place, on its fine work this year. Audubon now It was an interesting year. For annual class members it was a particularly busy one. We had a tiny little staff of just seven, which meant double the work for us and double the worry for Mrs. Zentmire come deadline time. But finally, at the end of the school year, we could sit back and look at all the carbon copies of finished layout sheets with a quiet pride because most of them “looked pretty good. We hope you’ll think so too. The staff this year included Marv Davis, business manager; Deanna Fancher, Assistant business manager; DeEtta Borkowski, assis- tant editor, activities; Judy Magnussen, sports; Doug Miller, music, seniors; Bar- bara Grabill, organizations. These six made up a fine and responsible staff. From them came the ideas, the designs, the actual page layouts in the book. They were a wonderful staff to work with, and here and there they have done some truly excellent work. Our thanks go also to Mrs. Zentmire, our adviser, for the inspiration and con- structive criticism that supported our wild ideas while helping us put them into credit- able reality. And to Don Jensen for his patience with our hectic picture days and for some magnificent photography (witness the winter division page.) And to Inter-CollegiatePress of Kansas City, Missouri, for printing the book. And to the faculty and administration for putting up with us with such cooperation and courtesy. And to the student body for saying Cheese” so nicely for us, so many times. And to the businessmen who filled eleven pages of this book with their ad- vertisements. And, finally, to all the kibitzers whose offhand suggestions were often more help to us than they realized. Enjoy this book now; it's yours.
