Ass't Business Manager The chief reason for this dedication is because if our community was not an educa- tional and prosperous commun- ity we would not be able to pub- lish such a book. The size of our book shows the interest which the community has to- wards school activities. Also, it is the guidance of our parents, the people of this community, and the use of the Wheeler Community facilities provided by them which has made us what we are. Just last year, a swimming pool was opened for our use and now work is being com- pleted for a new athletic field. We thank our community for these new facilities, and may there be more and better ones in the years to come. SCHOOL AUGUST 29 School starts. In the top picture is the group whose hands guided the senior class through this last year. They are, Darrell Nielsen, treasurer; Carol Jean Detwiler, secretary; Carolyn Eddy, vice-president; and Donald Jayne, president. The next picture is a class meeting where so many things were discussed in the last four years. And below is the industrious chem- istry class where a hydrogen generator blew up this year. For skip day this year the class went to Vieshea, at Ames, Iowa. m m The Juniors this year had Candy- land as the theme for their prom, with the Satin Smooth music of Eddie Allen. The money they used for the prom came from this years magazine sales, which amounted to over $800. In the top picture are the Junior class officers. They are, Richard Lewer, secretary; Betsy Hansen, vice- president; Ed Burkhardt, president; and Gary Speas, treasurer, who was absent. Next is a typical class meeting where the planning for the prom took place. On the bottom is a picture of some of the Juniors busy preparing for the prom, which was their main objective this year. An hour long concert was presented over radio station K. J. A. N. in Atlantic. The concert originated from the grade school activity room. The band played several marches, popular numbers, and variety numbers. The choir sang several numbers including those they took to contest. The broadcast was a new and exciting experience for the kids of the band and choir. 39 Just a few more dimes. STUDENT COUNCIL President Ronald Wellendorf Vice-President Shari Johansen Secretary Sharon Kallesen Treasurer Rosemary Devitt The members of the Student Council are the presidents, vice-presidents and repre- sentatives of the various activities and classes. There was no Fall Formal this year but they did sponsor the assembly pro- grams, noon hour recreation, and activities commission as in the past. This year they set the wheels in motion for an Exchange Program with other schools. Their mam project was collecting money for the March of Dimes. To do this they had a contest be- tween the classes to see which would donate the most dimes. The juniors won by com- pletely filling two posters. The Student Council also sponsored a dance, the proceeds of which went to the March of Dimes, and took donations during the half of a basketball game. The total collected was $89. 18. Their annual initiation party, eld in September, consisted of a supper and candlelight ceremony with rollerskating afterwards. This year they changed their usual White Christ- mas ceremony of bringing gifts of food wrapped in white paper to a Thanksgiving ceremony and wrapped the food in paper of autumn colors. The food was then distributed to needy people in the community. For their Christmas program they had a religious ceremony instead. The theme of their Christmas Ball was Silver Bells. Wanda Ebert was chosen Queen of Hearts of their valentine party and the valentines were sent to the School for Severely Handicapped Children at Iowa City. Their main project was helping the Hi-Y and F. F. A. raise $180 to send to a little Korean girl whom the clubs adopted. In April they had their Mother and Daughter Tea and a style show put on by the girls. On May 4 they closed the year with their installation ceremony and Spring F ormal. V TUP ACTIVITIES Henry With Me m rui! The Pep Club is the organization behind the spirit shown at the football and basket- ball games. Both boys and girls can belong but no boys joined this year. The members sponsor the cheerleaders and present skits at the pep meetings. Their main projects are sponsoring the homecoming activities and taking care of the crowning of the P. T. A. carnival King and Queen, an event held in March. This year marked the organizing of the first Pepettes. Their posts and duties are similar to that of the Y-teen cabinet. The girls did a fine job in getting things done, and really worked to make this year's crowning ceremony of the Homecoming King and Queen prettier than ever before. Six of the boys attended the fall conference in October at Villisca. The Hi-Y program was quite varied this year. A game warden gave a talk on safety con- servation. Quite a few movies on sports were shown. A series of movies on boy and girl relations with talks by a minister were one of the more interesting programs. The main project this year was to help the Y-teens and F. F0 A. make $180 to send to an eight year old Korean girl whom the three clubs adopted. The Hi-Y made their share by helping the Y -teens pick up corn for several farmers. They also sponsored a dance and a few concessions after basketball games. PICTURED LEFT TO RIGHT ARE THE OFFICERS: Vice-President, Charles Railsbeck; Secretary, Dave Franck; Treasurer, Darrell Larsen; Chaplain, Jerroll Hansen; President, Alvin Albertsen. F. F A The F. F. A. had a total of fifty-three members this year. The organization has had a fine record in the past and this year they continued to add to it by winning their third straight gold award in the National Chapter Program of Work Contest. Another award they received was a silver and gold plaque from the Wis- consin Alumni Research As- sociation. Some of their com- munity projects for the year were: checking their own and other farms for safety, prun- ing trees and shrubs, testing seeds, and testing milk for butter fat content. They also contributed to the March of Dimes Tree of Lights. To- gether with the Y-teens and Hi-Y they helped raise $180 to send to a little Korean girl. For recreation they played a few basketball games, had a hayride with a chili supper afterwards, and had a dance. They also had a skating party and a watermelon feed. The sophomores, though, are just probationers. This year the society bought their own honor pins. The members paid for half of the cost and the other half was taken from their treasury. The society's main project is to sponsor the school paper. PICTURED LEFT TO RIGHT ARE THE OFFICERS: secretary-treas- urer, Marlene Hardie; president, Sharon Kallesen; vice-president, Ronald Kraft. The Honor Roll is made up of the students who get fourteen or more grade points a semester. These are the students who made it the first semester. The reason it was organized was to create interest in photography as a hobby, to aid the annual by giving the students more experi- ence in picture taking, and to develop a prevocational interest. The things they do are to discuss, and then develop print and enlarge pictures; discuss, and take different types of pictures at different angles. The club has no grade limitations, anyone may belong. This year the members split the charge for the chemicals used, it was twenty-five cents per person; and they bought their own paper and film. The club got off to a fine start and is sure to make progress in the next few years. KIM. m QUEER With the cooperation of the students and parents, the 1956 P. T. A. Carnival was a success. There was entertainment for everyone. One of the highlights was the wrestling match between Joe (Wild-Man) Brannan and Bob (Mr. America) Davitt. It was professional in style all the way. At 10:30 came the climax of the evening, the coronation of the P. T. A. King and Queen. The honors went to Phyllis Deist and Larry Petersen. Their attendants were: Seniors, Sharon Kallesen and George Sornsen, Juniors, Janet McGuire and Norm Ingwers, Freshmen, Jane Murray and Jack McGuire. The coronation brought the 1956 P. T. A. Carnival to a close. JR.-SR. RJWET The 1956 JR. -SR. Prom started with a banquet presented to the Seniors in a Candyland setting. Toastmaster for the banquet was Darrell Larsen. The featured speaker was Mr. Wendell Rollins, who kept us amused with his humor. Of course Mr. Rollins had to tell us something about Denisen. The steak dinner prepared by the junior mothers and served by the freshmen was very delicious. And last of all we have to give credit to the juniors who did such a good job on preparing the banquet. 66 JK-Sit. NUDI This year's all night prom in honor of the seniors was very successful. The music for dancing in Candyland was provided by Eddie Allen and his orchestra. After the prom a movie was shown at the Rose Theatre. The name of the movie was Tarantula which was enjoyed by everyone. Following the movie more entertainment was provided by the junior class in the way of dancing, skating, and bowling. At 5:00 A. M. breakfast was served by the junior mothers at the Memorial Building. WINTER HIGHLIGHTS The Christmas Season Highlights began with the coronation of Sally Kerwin as Miss Merry Christmas. The students of A. H. S. selected Sally to reign over the Christmas festivities. A musical program was presented to the student body by the Choir and Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. Place, on Decem- ber 21. The next highlight event was the annual Christmas Ball which was held at the Mem- orial Building on the evening of December 21. Music was provided by the Roger Loots orchestra. A large Christmas tree was used as the center piece to denote the Christmas Season. On January 3, the students of A, H. S. returned to the school as the Christmas vacation came to a close. The last of the Christmas festivities ended with the burning of the Christmas trees at the Twelfth Night Ceremonies. Marching hand The Audubon High School Marching Band marched at five home games, and at one out of town game in conjun- ction with the Guthrie Center Band. They also participated in Audubon's Homecoming Parade and in the Annual Fire- man's Parade at Atlantic. Concert The Audubon High School Concert Band was made up of sixty stu- dents for the 1955-56 season. An annual spring concert was presented by the band. They also presented a pop concert and a more serious concert to the high school. A radio broadcast was presented by the band and choir over station K. J. A. N. The band played Allerseelen by Richard Strauss and Amparito Roco by Jaime Texidor for large group contest which was held in Audubon this year. It looked like a promising year until after our first game with Perry, who held us at a 14-0 margin; Harlan then stopped us at 14-13. The team wasn't discouraged at this though, showing their strength and agility by easily defeating Exira, 13-0; and Manning, 27-0. The following week the team went to Guthrie Center only to fine the foes too strong for them. We also became the sad losers of the Glidden and Jefferson games. Then Coon Rapids played the Wheelers only to find to their dismay the staggering defeat of a 27-0 game. For the last game of the season the Wheelers played Scranton, our toughest foe of the season. This was the last game for five senior boys. They were Gary Christensen, Paul Christensen, Jack Mullenger, Dave Hansen, and Darrell Nielsen. They wound up with a 9 won and 8 lost record. The fine hustle and spirit of the team made a good season. The team placed third in the Coon Valley Conference. Kathy Cowton, Pat Shoesmith, Sandra Shoesmith and Sharon Kallesen made All-Confer- ence second team. Pat Shoesmith and Sharon Kallesen also made the All- State Honor Roll. There were several outstanding games during the season. Most of the games were close and exciting. The forwards outscored their op- ponents on the average of one point per game. The scoring in the front court was well balanced between Sharon Kallesen, Sandra Shoesmith, and Judy Christensen. Harriet Albertsen, Kathy Walters and Betty Rustvold gave strong support at the last of the season. The guards this year did a very good job by holding their opponents to a forty-eight point average per game. The outstanding defensive players were Pat Shoesmith, Kathy Cowton, and Suzie McDonald. Dee Borkowski, Vicki Miller, Janice Winther and Betsy Hansen turned in some fine play also. Probably the best played game of the year was the Guthrie game. Another good game was the girl's victory over Coon which gave them their conference rating. A 5 won 2 loss conference record put the Wheelers in the runner-up spot in the conference behind Guthrie Center. Audubon was the only team able to defeat the champions in conference play. The Wheelers wound up the season with a 12 won 9 lost record the best over all season record since 1945. Gary Christensen led the scoring during the season with a 17 plus average over the 21 game schedule. Gary was selected as the sixth man on the All- Southwest Iowa team and along with teammate Dick Lewer was selected on the All-Conference first team. Jack Abeltins, junior center was selected on the All-Conference second team. Seven major letters were awarded at the end of the playing season. Letters went to seniors: Gary Christensen and Ronnie Wellendorf, juniors: Ed Burk- hardt. Max Hardie, Darrell Larsen, Jake Abeltins, and Dick Lewer. Gary and Ronnie were selected by the squad as co-captains for the season. They gave a hint of things to come when, early in the season, they journeyed to Omaha to take part in the North High Invitational Tournament for the first time. Wrestling against Nebraska's State Champions. Alvin Albertsen got a first place, Dave Hansen and Alvin Grabill got second places and the team placed third. The team's season record of 8 wins 4 losses is the best ever recorded by an Audubon wrestling team. During the season they went on a six meet winning streak to set another school record. Dave Hansen was one of the best wrestlers ever to compete for Audubon. The team finished second in the district with three champions; Dave Hansen, Leroy Albertsen, and Tom Nelsen, three seconds and three thirds. They took six men to the State Tournament where they finished fourteenth in the state. This team traveled more miles than any wrestling team in Audubon's history and in doing so came into contact with many people in various cities and towns. Gary Christensen in the pole vault, Tom Nelsen in the mile and the medley relay team qualified for the state meet. Gary Christensen turned in some outstanding performances in the pole vault winning first place in the Sac City Relays, the Eagle Relays, the Trojan Relays, the Dis- trict meet at Harlan and the Coon Valley Conference, in which Audubon placed third. He set a new school record of 11' 1 4 at the district meet. Others to win first places in the Conference meet were Tom Nelsen in the mile and Ed Burkhardt in the low hurdles. The picture at the bottom of the page shows some of the track team working out on the new quartermile track which was built during the summer. He is a former student of Audubon High. The team proved themselves better than was antici- pated, by ending the season with a 4 win 3 loss conference record. This record put Audubon in a three-way tie with Guthrie Center and Scranton for third place in the Coon Valley Conference. The leading hitters for the year were Dick Lewer, .474, and Ed Burkhardt, . 37 5. Bob Ehlert held the pitching record of 2 wins and 1 loss. Other pitchers were Gary Crees, 1-0, and James Jorgensen, 1-2. During one of the games Gary Crees and Dick Lewer collided while going after a ball, resulting in a slight concussion for Gary Crees. Senior letter winners who will not be returning next year are Dave Haner, Jack Mullenger, and Gary Christensen. Richard Lauritsen vf JR.-HI FOOTBALL The primary purpose of a Junior High athletic program is to teach the fundamentals of tne sport. Games are also included to increase the interest and acquaint the participants with competition. The Little Wheelers had eight weeks of practice and played a five fame schedule. All the games were close, with one win and four losses. everal of the boys showed promise of being good future material on the Wheeler teams. JR.-Ill BOY’S B1SKETBILL The Junior High boy's basketball team was not outstanding, but a few showed promising ability. During the season the team played eight games, losing all of them. Through these games the boys gained the experience of basketball and competition. Although the practice sessions were short the team did a good job of learning the fundamentals of the game. 96 JR. HI TRACK The enthusiam of the Junior High track squad was very good. The team competed in meets at Harlan and Carroll where they did well in tough competition. The last week of the season an inter-squad meet was held in which every boy participated in every event. This proved to be a lot of fun as well as good experience for all the squad. Bill Middleswart, Halver Sornsen, and Ronnie Swansen were the leading scorers in this inter-squad meet. JR.-Ill GIRL’S RMETRWL Junior High girl's basketball started practice after Thanksgiving and worked mostly after the main part of the basketball season. They only played two games, as fundamentals took most of the practice time. The squad had good height and showed much improvement during the season. Some are showing signs of being outstanding on the future high school teams. 97 Hoard of Education PICTURED LEFT TO RIGHT: Dr. James Ramsey, Ben Schmidt, Rod Hagglund, John Parrott, Jr., President; Perry Roberts; Gay Thomas, Secretary; A. A. Kruse, Treasurer-not pictured. An expression of gratitude is owed to the Board of Education for their time and service to better our school in innumerable ways. They make decisions and help provide opportunities for students so that we may obtain a good education. The Board's projects for this year include: remodeling of the Jr. High study rooms and the girls dressing room, and a new athletic field along with being the study counsel for reorganization. 100 To the class of 1956: It has been said that Education is the knowl- edge of how to use the whole of oneself. Many men and women use but one of two faculties of the score with which they are endowed. A man is educated who knows how to make a tool of every faculty - how to open it, how to keep it sharp, and how to apply it to all practical purposes. It is my sincere wish for you that the Audubon High School has made you aware of the tools you possess, the desire to use all of those tools, and the knowledge necessary for their application. Best regards for a happy and prosperous future. H. H. Rice, Superintendent The Administration To the '56 Wheeler Staff: Those who dare to shoulder responsibility-- find the true key to happiness. Audubon High School and its patrons can be justly proud of the 1956 Wheeler and its staff. The preparation, composition, and completion of this fabulous production will ever portray the people and activities of Audubon High School's 1955-56 school year. Ted L.
