This year w' graduate — our time’s up — we arc free to leave the shelter of A.H.S. We’ve had our share of fun and we’ve learned something too. But before we leave we want to take one more look — “How about it? Would you like to come along?” In the month of September in the year 1938, our little class started out upon its long journey through public school. We were rather scared because we didn’t know the way too well, but we soon learned. We spent the first year painting, singing, and playing house. The purpose of this activity was to learn how to get along with people. That year was one that many of us will never forget. Most of the year we “owned” and operated” a grocery store. We were divided into two groups. One class in the morning and the other in the after- noon. First grade was one of our happiest years. It was rather strange to us as we had to learn to sit in one seat all day. What a problem! We met many new faces and places in books along our journey as we were beginning to read. “See Dick. See Jane. See Dick and Jane” could be heard many a day. We spent much time playing with a large dollhouse that Miss Kopp had in her room. We made new furniture and rugs for it. Time passed very quickly during those first few years. We had to learn the hard way. Almost all of us spent some time or other in the back rooms or cloak rooms for doing some- thing not on the approved list. In third grade we were again divided into two groups. Our teachers were Miss Lee and Miss Gardner. In fourth grade we seem to have gotten the best of our teachers. We were still in two groups, but one group was a little ahead of the other. One teacher grew tired of us but another came to take her place. In sixth grade Miss Hertz started the “Lassie” series, this continued into seventh grade. The highlight of our year in the seventh grade was the Seventh and Eighth Grade Prom, held in the gym. It was a huge success and every one hacl a grand time. We were one of the first classes that had real eighth grade graduation exercises. These were held in the grade school assembly. In 1947, we proudly entered high school. We made many new friends that year and were joined by all of the country students from miles around. Some of us already knew our way around high school, but many of us got into wrong classes or jumped up to leave study hall when the telephone rang. In our sophomore year, we were all get- ting pretty used to the routine. At least, we no longer got lost. In our junior year we presented the prom, “Pirates”. Sally Jo Johnson was class president, and did a wonderful job on the prom. Our class play, “CLARENCE” was also a huge success. This, our senior year, we have found to be our busiest and most adventuresome. Our class play this year was also a success, as was our football team, which included twelve seniors. Yes — our journey has been most success- ful. But it does not end here. Now, as we part to go our separate ways, we hope that some day soon, our paths will cross and that we can reminisce on our never-to-be-forgotten jour- ney together. 4 JEANENE ABILDTRUP “JEANIE” ACTIVITIES: Y-Teens 1,2,3,4; Pep Club 2,3,4; Office work 4; Driver’s Training 2 HOBBY: Parties and Dances AMBITION: To do secretarial work and get married ALMA ALBFRTSEN ACTIVITIES: Y-Teens 3,4; Librarian 4; Honor Roll 2; HOBBY: Sewing AMBITION: To be a bookkeeper IONE ANDERSEN “ELOND E” ACTIVITIES: Y-Teens 1,2,3,4; Grade School Office 3,- HOBBY: Reading and Embroidering AMBITION: To be a nurse or an office worker ROBERT ANDERSEN “ANDY” ACTIVITIES: Football 2; Baseball 1 HOBBY: Fishing and Hunting AMBITION: To study veterinarian medicine 5 f ARTHUR CAMPBELL “ART” ACTIVITIES F.F.A. 1,2,3,4 HOBBY: Reading AMBITION: To become a successful farmer BETTY CHRISTENSEN ACTIVITIES: Class Officer 1; Y-Teens 1,2,3,4; Pep Club 2; Office 3,4; Basketball 2,3; Junior Class Plav 3; Honor Roll L2,3 HOBBY: Embroidering and dancing AMBITION: To do secretarial work NIEL CHRISTENSEN “CHRIS” ACTIVITIES: Harlan 1,2,3; Football 4; Class Officer 4; Choir 4; Homecoming King 4 HOBBY: Sleeping AMBITION: To be a farmer SVEND CHRISTENSEN “SNEEB” ACTIVITIES: Football 1,2 HOBBY: Hunting and fishing AMBITION: To join the Navy 6 PATRICK CLARK “RED” ACTIVITIES: Football 1,2,3,4; Baseball 1,2; Track 3,4; Basketball 2; Hi-Y 1.2,3,4; Class Officer 2; Honor Roll 1,2 HOBBY: Sports AMBITION: To go to college NADINE CLEMMENSEN “CLEMMY” ACTIVITIES: Y-Teens 1,2,3,4; Pep Club 2,3,4; Pep Club Officer 3; Basketball 1,2,3,4; Class Officer 2; Art 1; Driver's Training 2; Popularity Queen 1; Annual Staff 4; Y-Tecn Cabinet 3,4; Homecoming Queen 4 HOBBY: Sports AMBITION: To go to business school LAWRENCE CRONK “LARRY” ACTIVITIES: Guthrie Center 1; Hi-Y 2,3,4; Baseball 2; Basketball 2,3,4; Track 3; Football 2,3,4; Jr. Class Play 3; Co-captain Football 4; Homecoming King Attendant 4 HOBBY: Sports AMBITION: Hydraulic Engineer 7 LYLE DAVID ACTIVITIES: Choir 3.4 HOBBY: Bowling AMBITION: To be a farmer HELEN HUFFMAN ‘FRANKIE” ACTIVITIES: Y-Tcens 1,2,3.4; Pep Club 2,3,4; Drivers Training 2 1 lOBBY: Cooking AMBI I ION: To be a teacher 0 ROBERT EASTERLY ‘DOC” ACTIVITIES: Basketball 1; Baseball 2 HOBBY: Hunting and Fishing AMBITION: To be a mechanic CHARLES EDDY ‘CHUCK” ACTIVITIES: F.F.A. 2,3,4; Baseball 4 HOBBY: Automobiles AMBITION: To be a successful farmer 8 ROS AN NT. The Audubon High School Music Depart- ment has made a good showing in past years at various contests and on public occasions. During the fall of 1950 the Marching Band performed at the Firemen’s Festival in Atlantic, at the Football Jamboree in Carroll, and at the Marching Contest in Shenandoah, where it re- ceived a rating of II. The Concert Band combined with a few outsiders to give weekly concerts during the summer of 1950. They also presented a public concert in January of 1951. Featured were several high school soloists accompanied by the band. The band attended Music Contest in the spring as did the ensembles and soloists from the music department. During the course of the jyear the choir and glee-cfub have been active in many school programs, such as the Thanksgiving and Christ- mas programs. The choir also attended several church services to contribute special music. Both vocal groups attended the Music Contest in the spring. The vocal department will lose thirteen seniors by graduation and the instrumental de- partment will lose fourteen seniors. 31 SAXOPHONE QUARTETTE The saxophone quartette is very active in social entertainment throughout the year. Tire F.F.A. is an organization of farm bovs studying Vocational Agriculture. Their major objective is to obtain a leadership train- ing. The Audubon Chapter has an Annual Program of work which includes items in: leadership, recreation, thrift, co-operation, community service and scholarships. A brief summary of our last year’s train- ing shows that we had eight members on the school honor roll. Two members received the Iowa Farmer degree and one was elected to a State Office. We had a parliamentary procedure team which gave demonstrations in Coon Rapids, Atlantic, and Audubon. A gold award in the Chapter Contest was won by the chapter last spring. For recreation, we have had parties, con- tests and basketball games. We won all our games except the one with Manning. Our Com- munity Serv ice included repairing the city fire- place, testing seed, and a Soil Conservation Field Day. This Soil Conservation Field Day was one of the largest ones ever held bv the F.F.A. boys in Iowa. We have co-operative activities such as selling garden seeds, Christmas cards. Booster Plates, and mail box signs. The seniors took a 1600 mile trip visiting four Agri- cultural Colleges, Universities, Parks, and the Indianapolis Speedway. The Audubon Chap- ter’s scrapbook won the gold award at the State Convention. 38 6C yy 9i£) ?v fifovi£0 i £, £ ?• ?• s4' 7eam BACK ROW: Mr. Hamilton, Clark Griffith, Dick Petersen, Paul Rutherford, Frank Ebert, Boh Mullengcr, Don Lauritsen, Dean Weber, Duane Thompson, Rue Eddy. The Y-Teens are a branch of the Y.W.C.A. Their duties consist largely of serving the school by promoting the interests and acti- vities of all students. This year a total of 145 girls joined the organization. Meetings were held every other week. Among the activities sponsored by the Y- Teens were: Gypsy Party, Thanksgiving Program, Christmas Pall, Christmas Program, Formal Installation Dance and informal parties. Baskets of fruit were sent to the County Farm at Thanksgiving. By soliciting White Christmas gifts, three needy families in Audu- bon were able to have a happier Christmas. In the summer of 1950, they paid part of the expenses for eight girls to attend Y-Tccn Summer Conference at Grinncll. At this con- ference, Jane Ellen Magnussen was one of five girls elected to the planning committee for next summer’s Y-Tcen Summer Conference. 46 OFFICERS |)| AN CRAM I R, vice-president; DON JFNSKN, secretary; DON HALLFTT, treasurer; CHARLFS MUMGAARD, chaplain; F.D VAN GORDFR, president. 47 'Pefi @lu OFFICKRS Studeat (£auuctf 49 Student (2 uuctl The Student Council is a relatively new organization in our school. The council was organized in 1949. Everyone thought highly of the plan and it was carried over to the present year. All members of the council are elected directly by the student body. Two in- dividuals from each class are chosen, a boy and a girl. The class presidents of the past and present year are also included. Each activity elects one member to the council, and from these the members elect officers. This year Mr. Frese is the faculty advisor. Some of the things the Student Council has done this year are: buy corsages and boutonnieres for Homecoming candidates, and bring several entertainers and programs to our school. The noon recreation program is also operated by the Student Council and members of the faculty. The school newspaper, “The Wheeler Spokesman” is edited by a member of the Student Council. The Student Council’s voice in school affairs and programs has certainly brought about better understanding between the students and faculty. 50 'ptedAman 'Initiation 51 Minii' nnipp-p ininu SSSI,,«' ■■IIP) sssiiis 53 54 55 s4 ututU S. The nineteen-fifty—fifty-one football season was a very successful one, the final results were six games won and only three lost. After getting off to a slow start, our varsity came through with a strong finish. The Wheelers lost the first two games, both by small margins, the third, and next to homecoming, the most important one, Exira, we won. After losing the next game to Lake City our varsity w as unscored upon for the last four games. 57 CO-CAPTAINS M. THYGESEN, L. CRONK { d TiCy it Front Row, left to right: J. Weiman, O. Lindholm, T. In their second game, a greatly improved squad met the Scranton eleven and defeated them 19-0. Their final game was with Carroll and ended with a 12-6 score. The freshman group has several prospects for future W heeler Varsity Teams. 59 The 1950 Homecoming was a gala occasion. King Neil Christ- ensen and Queen Nadine Clemmensen, with their royal court, presided over all activities of the day. Homecoming festivities got underway the night before the Avoca-Audubon game with a big bonfire, speeches and a parade. The following afternoon, Coronation Ceremonies for the Royal Couple were held in the high school assembly. As a suitable climax to the affair, the Wheelers won their game— 19-0. Each of their touchdowns was made at the south end of the field directly in front of the Queen’s throne. 60 ouatcf Left to Right: L. VVinther, L. Groteluschen, L. Hansen, C. Petersen, M. Cowton, D. The 1950-51 basketball season proved to be a very inconsistent one for the Wheelerettes of Audubon High. Their victories and defeats were always unpredictable. They opened their season with a victory over Gray, and dropped their next game to Templeton. From here on out, until the end of the season, the girls per- formed successfully and unsuccessfully in streaks. Although their record shows eight wins and fifteen losses, it also shows many games which were very close and were lost only in the last few minutes of play. Through- out the season the team was paced by the marksmanship of all the forwards. No one person stood out spectacularly during the season, but our County Tournament games were definitely led by Charlotte Petersen, while the Sectional Tournament games were paced bv Lowene Winther. The team’s de- fense showed many spectacular performances. one of these being in the Exira game when they held Exira’s sharp-shooting and towering post player to five points. The Wheelerettes became ' AUDUBON COUNTY CHAMPS OF 1951 bv defeating Exira in the first round 43 to 41, and Viola in the second round 54 to 48. This was the first time in five years that the Audubon Girls have beaten the Exira Las- sies. In the Sectional Tournaments, Audubon was nudged out bv Panama in the Sub-finals after defeating two strong teams and tournev favorites Manilla and Templeton. And so the Wheelerettes ended their 50-51 season. Two trophies were won and hopes are now high for next year when a full veteran team will return. Those lost through gradua- tion are Lowene Winther, Phyllis Henriksen, LuAnn Groteluschen, and Nadine Clemmen- sen. @acc Ucf J. Zentmire, P. Eagen, R. Reser, J. Bowman, D. Jensen, C. Petersen. D. Audubon High School’s newest sport received a warm welcome by the student body. Thirty-three boys competed for the first eleven. Although the season was not exceptionally successful the team showed promise of future victories with more experience.
