10 Varied perspectives are forced upon community residents and alumni as the University assumes an active role in each. Small barber shops and volunteer fire departments tend to become swallowed by the dominance of the University. But certain traditional concerns of the community assimilate into student values. Alumni, involved with donations to, public relations of and research and development for the University, are most visible to students upon descending on the campus during football season. A preseason number one ranking in both the AP and UPI polls increased attendance as each home game reached sell-out capacity. The addition of a 10,000 seat upper deck at Jordan-Hare Stadium will appease by 1986 a part of the growing ticket demand. TRADITIONAL

Construction was not limited to new buildings, but also included renovations which resulted in inconveniences to many on-campus students. The Quad Cafeteria remained closed for remodeling most of the year. The hill dorms were continually being reroofed or having abestos removed. Furthermore, workers surrounded the Foy Union Building while reroofing and painting the central-campus structure. 9 Slum
