Two of Auburn's student senators attempted unsuccessfully to prove that they had uncovered what they termed a scandal spring quarter. Only hours after the initial revelation, students had dubbed the mishap Shakergate. The controversy surrounded the use of student activity fees for shakers which are given out at each University football game. These senators claimed the amount was too large to be spending for lust shakers. But the accusations didn't stop there. In the ensuing Senate Budget Committee meetings, these senators continued to reveal their incriminating evidence to both the Senate committee and the students, who they said deserved to know. These two senators barraged the Senate committee with vendor vouchers and receipts which revealed the price paid the previous year for shakers. It was on this price that the SGA Spirit Committee based its budget for the upcoming year. The Spirit Committee learned later, after presenting its budget, that the shakers could be purchased for this year at a slight discount. The committee decided to simply maintain its current budget and thus buy more shakers for the students. Rather than letting the crime escape the notice of the public, the senators revealed the negligible difference in the two shaker prices of the previous years and the They Employed Techniques Reminiscent Of Watergate iHence, 'Shakergatey . . . upcoming year. They employed techniques reminiscent of Watergate ihence, Shakergate J when they tapped their own phone to record their conversation with the shaker manufacturer who unsuspectingly revealed the new price. The Shakergate tapes were played in the Senate committee hearings accompanied by accusations of possible embezzlement by the SGA administration. The administration had been in office for less than a month. The unfortunate result of this concern for the well-being of the students was mistrust of the newly-elected officers who had, in actuality, done nothing to deserve the lack of faith. However, by the end of spring quarter, many students had their faith reaffirmed in the SGA when it became obvious that the entire controversy had been over, . . . well ... nothing. - by Alan Bannister Shake gat 5
