Promises? Promises Student Elections April brings more than blue skies and terrific tansg it brings spring elections and with them, like a swarm of locust, come the ,, plague of propaganda and promises, promises, promises. For one week we are buried beneath it all. lt papers our doors so we can't find the door knob. lt attacks us on the concourse in the shape of clowns or cookies. lt invades our minds when we sit in class staring at blackboards so completely covered with slogans there's hardly any room to write. Haley Center is invisible beneath the signs covering it. The posters layer themselves on the bulletin boards of every hall corner, eventually sloughing off onto the floor to be kicked into the dust. Everyone's got a slogan: Vote for me and it'll put white in your smile! Vote for me and l'll do your homework for a year! Since every campaign poster and leaflet makes the same claims, how does one make an intelligent decision based on this propaganda? Eeny, meeny, miney, mo The average student running for a major office, like president, vice-president, treasurer, Glom or Plainsman editor, Miss Auburn or Homecoming, spends close to S200 legally and probably lots more when you figure in non-deductible items like t- shirts that are sold, not given away. Minor The posters layer the bulletin boards of every hall corner, eventually falling to the floor . . . offices like school and district senators can spend S75 to 5100. Still, it's a lot of money. And that doesn't include countless man- hours putting up posters, painting signs, car windows and store windows and writing on black boards. Then turning around and pulling it all down again. A tough office to run for is off-campus senator. Even though there are 13 senators, there are usually 45 people running. So, how to choose if you don't know any of them and feel it your patriotic duty to vote? Enter the party system. There's Broadway, Wheelbarrow, Mirror, Slim Whitman, Good Times, Party for the Retirement of Bear Bryant, and dozens of others. Being a member of a hastily- formed party not only gives you out-of-the- ordinary recognition, but can help with your bank balance by combining budgets. But a sure-fire way to get elected is a good gimmick. Think Pink and use the Pink Panther on all your campaign material or try Pac-Man posters. lt's usually standard for the Miss Auburn and Homecoming candidates to pick a flower, fruit or favorite symbol to characterize their campaigns. For Auburn students not involved with the campaigns, the week's barrage of paper can be a nuisance and more than bewildering. And just when you're tired of it all, it all vanishes.
