At Least I 1dn't Ram Fort Walton Beach isn't likely to forget the weekend of May 7, 1982. lt was this weekend that members of 14 Auburn fraternities and sororities, and numerous friends, invaded the town for what was called House Party. By Friday evening, hotels such as the Carousel, Aloha Village Inn and Blue Horizon were filled to capacity lor morel with students anticipating a fantastic weekend. The sun rose early Saturday morning and with it, a few people eager to begin work. on a glorious two-day tan. Among the late- risers, bloodshot and squinting eyes were telltale signs of the previous night's , activities. lt is said that the best way to cure a hangover is to begin drinking again, and many opted to follow this advice. Two bands had been booked to play Saturday afternoon and evening on a bandstand behind the Blue Horizon. The first band, scheduled to play at noon, was delayed three hours because of a car accident. Despite the late start, the party was a success. When the band finished its performance, everyone drifted back to his hotel room, car or wherever he was crashing for the weekend to rest for the big party that night. Three School Buses Were Parked ln Front Of The Blue Horizon, Ready To Transport The Crowd lf It Dldn't Cooperate. 5' Joe Loftis and the Pinks were engaged to play from 9 p.m. till 1 a.m. A crowd of A about 650 students gathered around the bandstand, prepared for the evening with lawn chairs, blankets and stocked coolers. Unfortunately, though the students were ready to party, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Departmnet had other ideas. Flashing blue lights were soon reflecting from all directions, and the spectators were informed that property was being destroyed and everyone was to leave. Three school buses were parked in front of the Blue Horizon, ready to transport the crowd if it didn't cooperate. The band was eventually told to leave when the crowd refused to disperse. After several soaring renditions of 'fGod Bless America and War Eagle to exemplify patriotism and school spirit, the people wandered away. M-TV on cable in the hotel rooms would have to suffice . . . and it did.. No, Fort Walton Beach won't soon forget House Party weekend, but then again, tewy who were there will.
