The lines and pictures in this, the 1 963 GLOMERATA, reveal the rolling sequence of life at Auburn University. Here portrayed is the now, the present, this year 1962-63. Howevor, immersed in the now are the past and the future, the new and the old; traditions sprung from a life peculiar to this place, these buildings, these people. The present is the axle, the center-point of the ever revolving life flow which defines the moment of experience. This moment of presence is our projection. The moment, in the eyes and on the lips, of enduring love first spoken, the moment of ecstatic feeling. The moment, in a dingy classroom, of knowledge well-wrought and expressed on lined paper with th joy of positive assurance. The moment, in a smoked-choked, beer-stained room, of God and truth and purpose and decision, indecision, revision, confusion, frustration. Around the moment revolves a visionary, whirling wheel of totality. Our year is one of impermanence, replete with transitory feelings and experiences, but is the focal point of permanence, of the unrelenting, absolute flow of life. Defined by time and place, symbolized by the wheel, here is totality full of the electric poetic, bursting with vastness unwillingly confined to a present now recalled, now projected as it is, with the broad implications of simplicity. Wc surrender our work to imaginations which alone can impart meaning and significance, which alone can set the wheel rolling through the myriad folds of mind. We have portrayed by implication. The totality must be envisioned by imagination. The experience must be personal, must be wrapped up in the you and the me. The specific scenes and faces and events are mere representations of scenes, faces, events that you or I might remember; the expressions and experiences have only a personal meaning, your meaning or my meaning. Here is the GLOMERATA—designed to fulfill a purpose that is simple and yet profound, specific and yet abstract: that all of us might take renewed delight in the experiences of one year at Auburn University, that all of us, considering these experiences, might sec them whole and clearly and thus retain a sense of past, present, and future while retaining also a full vision of the whole.
