Of course no one knows whence came this benevolent godparent without permanent form, as is apparent from the many and varied tales of its first noticeable appearance. But we do know that the War Eagles must call Auburn home, and we may suppose that its omniscient spirit has looked, is looking, and will look down on us with real concern, swooping down to lend a helping hand whenever the honor or safety of Auburn is endangered. For years now our wise and powerful friend has brooded over the everyday world of Auburn and its struggles, defeats, and final victories. No history ever written about Auburn could compare favorably with the inti- mate knowledge the War Eagle has of Auburn. Certainly the following brief account of our past would be more meaningful if the War Eagle would lend its private memories to the recountal. The War Eaglefs help would be especially desirable in recalling our first ancestors and their labors in starting what turned out to be the greatest school in the South.
