HIS EXCELLENCY, JOHN PATTERSON The Alabama Constitution of 1901 best describes the role of the Board of Trustees, The Alabama Polytechnic Institute . . . shall be under the management and control of a board of trustees. Every function of A. P. I. comes under their control through their duly appointed representatives. The Board has the power to appoint the officers and faculty; to prescribe courses of instruction; to fix rates of tuition and fees; to confer degrees; and to do whatever else they may deem best for promoting the interest of A. P. I. The trustees’ job has been of extreme importance in working for the largest student body Auburn has ever seen and consequently the largest budget to ever be approved. Projects approved this year include the new 5-year Engineering Curriculum and the construction of the 240 unit married students housing project now under construction. The most pressing problems confronting the trustees at present are the enlargement of the physical plant and the enlargement of the faculty to accommodate the rising enrollment. President Dr. Ralph B. Draughon is a living example of the traditional American success story. In 1918 he enrolled at Auburn as a freshman: served as an assistant professor of history and political science from 1937 to 1944 and as executive secretary and secretary to the Board of Trustees from 1944 to 1947. Following the death of Dr. Duncan in August of 1947, Dr. Draughon served as director of instruction and acting president until October of 1948 at which time he was installed as president of Alabama Polytechnic Institute. During his period of service as Auburn’s chief executive, Dr. Draughon has been faced with many grave problems which he has solved in a very capable manner. Dr. Draughon’s primary objective has been the balanced growth and improvement of all the varied fields of activity at Auburn. The policy of the administration has done much to build vertically the strong courses now offered by giving all branches and all departments equal consideration. In addition to his administrative duties Dr. Draughon is in great demand as a guest speaker and is requested to fill many social obligations. He is never too busy to confer with any student on a problem and always has their interest at heart. Truly Dr. Draughon, in a quiet and efficient manner, is providing the leadership for a greater Auburn. President RALPH B. DRAUGHON
