And that this star Is Mike Seeing us laugh And laughing with us. Sparkling brighter Than any other star. And I’d like to think That he's not lonely Up there So very far away But that the others stars Keep him company As he watches over us. Isn't it nice To believe We have in common A very special star And wherever we go And however lonely We may feel We don’t need to be. Because close to our hearts Is Mike shining brightly Reminding us always That we’re never alone. Mike Christy Gerken Mike. Linda. Christy. Ed Gerken Mike, Scott. Auburn High School students prove this statement. AHS students dress differently, act differently, take different classes, and have different plans for the future. On almost any given day, a per- son could observe the diversifica- tion in the halls and in the class- rooms at Auburn High. One could hear students “hab- lando espanol ” in one classroom and discussing THE CATCHER IN THE RYE in the next. In yet another classroom, students are dissecting a pig, while across the hall, they are taking dictation in shorthand. Inside the classroom, a person could see a boy in shorts—in Janu- ary. Next to him is a girl in a mini skirt and high heels and hoop ear- rings. Behind her is a girl in a denim jacket, covered with pins, and jeans. On the jeans, she has drawn various figures, including a peace sign and an 88. In the hall a girl in a metallic green blouse and Christ- mas ornament earrings walks in front of a boy wearing purposely ripped jeans. Anyone could clearly see that AHS students truly EXPLODE WITH DIVERSITY. Bill Ervin and Tom Appelt are about to explode. Seniors DON'T show diversity in dressing by posing tor a picture in their senior signature t-shirts. 3 Students Explode with Diversity % Students Explode with Diversity Brutal chicken fighters. Dana Baker and Patty Miller. Teri Buck's reaction to finding an error. Practice Set Poses Problems Suzanne Sanders and Larry Buske keep Mrs. White busy. Although the students find the practice set frus- trating at times, they also feel that it is helpful. Kim Dodd remarks, “It really gets my goat when I find errors, but I like it. It's kind of fun.” According to Doug Dolenc, “It's really nerve- racking, trying to get it done.” Jared Dudley is also worried about finishing. Mrs. White is NUTS for expecting us to get this done!” Sherry Cumming, however, doesn’t seem to mind it. It's pretty easy, and it has one advan- tage— no homework. Carla Hill is thankful for the practice set. “It’s a good opportunity for exper- ience before I get out in the 'real world’,” she explains. Stephanie Marsh sums up her feelings by stat- ing, “it was a very enjoyable and useful learning experience, but thank goodness it’s almost over!!” If the accounting students have seemed a little grumpy during the last nine weeks, they have a pretty good reason to be. For the entire last nine weeks, all accounting students “work” as ac- counting clerks for Fireplace, Inc., a fictitious fire- place store. The practice set allows the students to use all of the skills he or she has acquired. The students must face “real life problems and find solutions in a business-like atmosphere. Students Explode Rod’s Pox This winter, many Central Illinois communities experienced outbreaks of the chicken pox. Au- burn was no exception. From January 11 until February 1, Rod Meidel was on an extended Christmas break; he had the chicken pox. Over the real Christmas vacation, Rod visited his niece in Chatham, who had the chicken pox. “I had them when I was a kid, so I didn’t think I would get them again,” Rod explains. Unfortunately, two weeks later, Rod’s body started to become covered with the pox. For the next four days, his situation continued to get worse. “My doctor said it was a very rare case,” he states. The only medication Rod used was Calamine lotion, which relieved the itching somewhat. “It was the worse thing I had ever had in my life. I still have scars from them,” Rod says. “I still have scars” — Rod Meidel. Rod's body was taken over by chicken pox with Diversity Sherry Cumming in her awesome car, John Barnhill struts down the hall. Shall we dance? Allen Morrow asks Chy Searcy. Beth Miller and Tina Armstrong look so adorable! Foreigners Explode with Diversity They are from different countries and speak different languages — they are Auburn’s four foreign ex- change students. Mercedes Arroyo, who is staying with the Neumanns, is from Lerida, Spain. She is very happy in the Unit- ed States and is even considering attending college here to study lan- guages. Jois Nigrisoli decided to come to the United States because she was bored.” How anyone could be bored in her hometown of Milan, Ita- ly, population, 1,500,000 is a mys- tery to many AHS students. Jois, however, is enjoying her stay with the Parolas. Christian Cremer is a native of Wegberg, a city that he says sees more action than Auburn. He is stay- ing with the Kemps and reports that he has learned much about himself while here. Francisco Escobar, from San- tiago, Chile, says that while he has been here, he has found that many things he had heard about Ameri- cans are not true. Francisco is living with the Trojahn family. Dernier Cri “Le Dernier Cri”, French for the latest fashion, is a mini-magazine that focuses on the current fads at Auburn High School. Hemlines Skirts at Auburn High have gone to new lengths—long, mid, and the once-again popular mini. Steph Marsh wears her hair in a banana clip Burn Them or Buy Them? Banana clips are a controversial topic at Auburn High school. For those who are unfamiliar with ba- nana clips, they are banana shaped hair clips that hold the hair back in a pony-tail-like style. Since they became popular at AHS about two years ago, they have gained both many advocates and many enemies. Others agree with fashion maga- zines that proclaim that banana clips are definitely out”. Some girls even detest the clips so much that they have banana clip burning parties. Will banana clips soon go the way of bell-bottoms and clogs, or will they remain popular at AHS? Fast Food Finally For the past year, students have been enjoying Big Cookies, bacon cheeseburgers, and roast beef sandwiches on a regular basis, since Hardee’s restaurants have appeared in both Virden and Chat- ham. Ted Bailey comments, “I usually go there about three times a week.” Larry Buske remarks, I don't go to Dairy Queen as much now.” Dave ihlenfeldt is especially glad to have fast food so near. He ex- plains, “When I have a craving for fast food, I go bonkersl Now, I have a Hardee’s right there!” Toni Parola enjoys the conve- nience of the Virden and Chatham Hardee’s because, I don’t have to cook so much!” she states. Both Chatham and Virden got Hardee's restaurants—Auburn got a billboard! Trendy Tunes Musical tastes at AHS range from Top 40, such as INXS, Whifney Houston, George Michael, Whitesnake, Debbie Gibson, and the Dirty Dancing Soundtracks. Some students also prefer different” music, including Bob Marley, the Communards, and old classics, like the Bea- tles. Fashion Favorites (a''; '1' '■Vi. M3 -pr=n ra ..e,,,-,,. Obsession rw, . i mi III Students Show Spirit Dave Allen jumps to the finish line. As in past years, Auburn High School students celebrated Homecoming by participating in the cheerleader-sponsored Spirit Week. Dress up days, lunch-time activities, and a pep assembly highlighted the week. Each class competed for the Spirit Stick. The dress-up days were rich and famous day, paja- ma day, red, white, and blue day, pig-tail inside-out day, and the traditional blue and white day. A volleyball tournament be- tween the classes was played during lunch. The pep assembly included sleeping bag racing, marshmallow stuffing, and, of course, loud, excited cheering. Because they had the most members of their class dress up, showed the most spirit at the assembly, and won the volleyball tournament, the Seniors won the Spirit Stick. A festivity of excitement could describe the 1987 Homecoming parade. In honor of the bicenten- nial anniversary of the United States Constitution, the parade theme was Patriotism . Local businesses, clubs, high school students decorated their floats in red, white, and blue. The band, di- rected by Becky Kemp, marched in top form. As in previous years, there was a large turnout to view the parade. Cheerleaders take lime out from chants to give their special look. Red defenders. The referee signals one of Auburn’s four touchdowns. Trojans Romp Big Red The Trojans, after fumbling on their first possession, looked as if they were going to have a long Homecoming game against the Gi- rard Big Red. However, after a forced Girard fumble in the end zone by two Auburn defenders, Rob Ber- ola recovered for the touchdown. Jared Dudley kicked the extra point. Following a 64 yard march on 11 plays, Dudley, on a quarterback sneak, plowed over the goal line from one yard out. Coach Dave Bates decided to fake the kick. This resulted in a Ted Bailey pass to Jud Patterson for the two point conver- sion. In the second quarter, Patterson, who finished the game with 105 yards in 12 carries, rambled 30 yards for a touchdown. Dudley again kicked the extra point. Late in the second quarter, Dud- ley found Ted Bailey across the mid- dle. Bailey then dashed 56 yards for the touchdown. Bailey again passed on the fake, this time to Rob Berola, for two points. Although they didn't score in the second half, the Trojans went on to beat the Big Red 30-0 and improve their record to 3-1. While it might be conceived that the game was totally dominated by offense, it was not. The defense had five sacks. John Barnhill had three, while Dave Allen and Tom Carter each had one. Girard was held to only 74 total yards. Future Paths Three college-bound seniors — Michele Tate, John Havard. and Theresa Jones “I want to be like Bob Costas” — L. Ping “Study hard or you’ll regret it!” — Doug Dolenc The diverse goals and ambitions of the class of 1988 have led them to pursue different paths in life. Michele Tate has been accepted to the University of Illinois, where she will major in biology. “I'd like to get a job marketing pharmaceutical products after college,” she states. Theresa Jones will also attend the U of I. Her major will be in animal science. After completing four years, she plans to attend the U of I’s Veterinary Medical School. The- resa comments, “I really like ani- mals and I’ve always wanted to be able to help them. John Havard will continue his edu- cation at Illinois State University. He plans to study business with an em- phasis in accounting. Attending Wheaton College is Tammy Hawkins. She is going to major in junior high school educa- tion. “I want to make a difference, Tammy explains. “I want to help im- prove the kids’ self-esteem. “I want to be rich and famous, like Bob Costas or Howard Cosell,” confides Len Ping as he discusses his plans to become a television sportscaster. Len will major in com- munications at Southern Illinois Uni- versity at Carbondale. “Study hard or you’ll regret it!” is the advice Doug Dolenc gives to all high school students. He doesn't feel that he took full advantage of high school. He will further his edu- cation by attending Lincoln Land Community College for two years and then transferring to a four-year college. “I hope going to Lincoln Land will be a maturing experience for me. I don’t know if I’m quite ready to go to a big college right now,” he remarks. After graduation, Darrin Divjak will join a branch of the service. He hopes to have a career in the ser- vice. “Then I'll retire and move to Florida,” he quips. Kristen Heffernan and Kim Dodd are both considering attending flight attendant school. “I love to travel,” remarks Kris, as Kim agrees. Everyone has different dreams, that's what makes the world an in- teresting place. Seniors Diversify in Future It’s been a grueling PGA tour, but pro-golfers, Rod Meidel and Doug Dolenc have found time to organize a twenty-year reunion for the class of 1988. Rod’s parents are in Texas, making the Meidel residence the perfect place for the party. Before the big bash, they con- tacted a few old friends. Denny Ba- ker, who has recently purchased the Denny’s restaurant chain, will provide the food. When asked why he bought that particular chain, Denny replied, “I didn’t want to have to change the name.” Lisa Lackey and Stephanie Marsh will provide dessert from their world-famous, ul- tra-chic candy and popcorn shop. Interior decorator, Paul Harden and graphic artist, Mark Armstrong will decorate the Meidel home. Music will be provided by WYMG’s new disc jockey,, Jeff Hig- gins, who has replaced Ray Lytle. Many from the entertainment world will attend. Included is Patty Miller, who has replaced Vanna White on Wheel of Fortune . Also attending is Tammy Hawkins, who has taken Robin Leach’s place on Lifestyles of the Rich and Fam- ous”. Also arriving later will be Tonya Clough and Gary McGraw, who are taking a well-earned vacation from their sheep station in the Australian outback. Presidential candidate, John Barnhill, and running mate John King are expected to attend with their campaign manager, Todd Beard. Both veteran and first-year teachers at Auburn High School seem to like the atmo- sphere. Ms. Yeck, who taught at Normal and at Lincoln Land Community College before joining the AHS faculty in No- vember as a Spanish teacher, comments that in a smaller school, like Auburn, “there is a lot more togetherness AND friendliness.” She also likes the more relaxed atmosphere that she has found here. Mr. Murray, a first-year history teacher, notices that Auburn is somewhat like his hometown of Tuscola. “It’s about the same size and has the same problems.” He is also pleased with the enthusiasm that Auburn students have shown. For twenty years, Mrs. White has been a business teacher at Auburn. She has been happy with her job. Ac- cording to her, It would have been wasteful to spend my entire career working at something I didn’t enjoy most of the time.” Mrs. Krell, who has taught English at Auburn for a total of fifteen years, remarks, Although I don’t live in Auburn, I have always enjoyed my students.” Mr. Michels explains the principles of geometry. By earning a 7-3 re- cord, a conference championship, a victory over Virden, and a play-off berth, the team accomplished every goal they set, except for making it past the first round of play-offs. After a 14-7 loss to Kincaid, the Homecoming victory over Girard was the turning point of the season. With passing and running attacks, several different Trojan players contributed throughout the year to the overall success of the team. Of- fense wasn’t the only factor in- volved in the Trojans' victories; de- fense also played a key role. Against long-standing football rival, Virden, the Trojans’ defense held back a late Bulldog surge. Auburn went on to win the game, 22-20. The Trojans later tied the Virden Bull- dogs for the Prairie State Confer- ence crown. After a disappointing loss to Gille- spie in their last regular season game, the Trojans went on to the play-offs. The team ended their sea- son against Deer Creek Mackinaw, the state championship runners-up. Coach Dave Bates commented that the team had a winning attitude and good team effort. Dudley barks out the signals. Jared Dudley boots the extra-point. “We won by big plays, less mistakes, and a winning attitude’’ — Coach Bates Volleyball Team Attains Goals The bench watches as Sherry Cumming covers the hitter. By setting attainable goals and working together, the volleyball team had an extremely successful 22-7 sea- son. “The success of our team was due mainly to a team effort. Our goals could not have been achieved had we not had the right combination of people on the court,” remarked senior, Sarah Fader. “The team really got along better this year. We were well-rounded, and most of all, we were a FAMILY,” added senior team- mate, Melissa Allen. The girls tied for first place in the Prairie State Con- ference and placed second in the Sangamon County Tournament. They also placed sixth out of twelve teams in the Chicago Latin Tournament. Coach Ap Clarke commented, “Chicago gave us a competitive edge that contributed to our play in Sectionals against Riverton.” Although they lost to Riverton in the Sectionals, many members of the team believed that they played the best they had ever played against Riverton. “Riverton al- ways psyched us out,” noted Melissa Allen. Golf Season Fulfilling Amazing!” is how Danny Spears described his first hole-in-one. He shot it on the 17th hole at Auburn’s Edgewood Golf Course during a meet against Brown County. Coach Krumwiede commented, Danny’s ace was a thrill for us all. The Tro- jans went on to win the meet. As a first-year golf coach at Au- burn, Coach Jeff Krumwiede was proud of the team. Our record (4- 11) was misleading because of the outstanding competition we played, including several AA schools,” Krumwiede stated. The average team score was approximately 175, which is good for a school of Au- burn’s size. Auburn placed 7th out of 14 teams at the Taylorville-Stonington Invitational and placed 5th out of 13 teams at the Porta Invitational. At Regionals, which were held in Tay- lorville, the Auburn team finished 5th out of 14 teams. Doug Dolenc took third place at Regionals, shooting an 81. The low score was 80. Dolenc and Rod Meidel ad- vanced to Sectionals in Blooming- ton, where, according to Dolenc, the competition was really tough. We had a lot of fun, though, added Meidel. “Golf isn’t a wimp sport like people think it is,” Dolenc re- marked. “Our record was misleading” — Coach Krumwiede Matt Sokol, Danny Spears, Donny Webster. Although their record did not reflect it, many improvements were made throughout the season. Lacking size, but definitely not desire, the team progressed and gained confidence as the season went on. Their basketball skills im- proved and they lost some games by a very small margin. The girls put everything together and honored themselves by competing in the championship game of the New Berlin Region- al. Lives On by Len Ping The Trojans, after watching their dream fall short on a last second shot in 1987, went to the Illinois High School Association Class A State Basketball Tournament at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall in Champaign-Urbana as specta- tors. In 1988, they were determined to make it back as players. En route to a 26-3 record, the Trojans won the Waverly Holiday Tournament for the fourth con- secutive time, placed third in the Sangamon Coun- ty Tournament, captured the Prairie State confer- ence title undefeated, and won the regional. They set high school team records for the most wins and fewest losses in a season. Throughout the season, the Trojans displayed sportsmanship and again demonstrated the “play as a team” concept as they overcame injuries and illnesses. Much of the Trojans' success was made possible by the constant cheering and faithful support of their loyal fans. The Trojans were bumped from the road to Champaign in the sectional semi-finals against Al- ton Marquette. They remained proud, however, of their accomplishments that put them among the elite company of great Auburn basketball teams. According to Coach Ray Young, “The season was a perfect example of what high school bas- ketball is all about — clean, competitive, deserv- ing young men working hard to bring honor to themselves, their school, and their community. During the football season the girls entertained the fans with dance routines to Boom-Boom”, Slow Ride , Brass Monkey”, “Wipe Out , and “Body to Body”. After this season, they lost one of their captains, Theresa Jones, to scholastics. Throughout the long basketball season, they repeated their five routines and added one more, Oh Yeah”. Between the games and practices they managed to keep the spirit alive with a pep assembly in which everyone took part. Sticking with the traditional fund raisers: face painting, garage sale, buttons, and mini poms, they had a very successful year. Nikki, Jen, Sandy. Under the direction of a new coach, Jeff Krumwiede, the boys were unsure of what to expect. After several days of practice, however, the team realized they could win more games in one year than they had previously won in two. With the help of improved play and spirit signs that were displayed at the school, the Trojans even started to attract large numbers of fans at home games. Choosing good pictures, designing in- novative layouts, cropping the pictures to fit the layouts, writing, editing, and typing interesting copy, and, of course, meeting those dreaded deadlines — it’s all in a day’s work for any dedicated staff member. The yearbooker also has to worry if the students are going to like the book, and if the book is going to be “trendy” enough to meet current “yearbook ex- pert” standards. Then, the BIG worry, “Will our budget cover everything?” It may all sound like an overwhelming amount of work and worry, but the chal- lenge is definitely worth the effort. Every working staff member is justly rewarded when her or his work is actually seen in print. Len Ping works SO hard on copy! Is Heather Handy ever NOT typing?
