The year started off with the council involved in homecoming, and it was a great success. To raise money, we sold popcorn at football and basketball games. At Christmas time the council sponsored a day of plays, films and refreshments. The major thing the Student Council did this year was to get a recreation area for fhe sfudenfs at noon hour. Student Council members monitored the area. On Valentine's Day we put on a skit. We brought back some of the teachers' old flames, and everyone enjoyed it. The Council was also in charge of Teacher's Appreciation Day and helped in the dedication of the new building. Hopefully next year's council will keep up the good work! I would like to compliment all the members of the 1979-80 Yearbook Staff and especially the division editors for their efforts in making this one of the best yearbooks Auburn High School has ever put out. There were many hours of hard work put into it and we now have something really great and memora- ble to show for all the time and frustrations. Coach Ed Lewis was satisfied with the performance of all four major letter winning participants; Senior, Dave Marshall; Juniors, Rod Stauffer, Brian Rector; Sophomore, Dan Marshall. Coach Lewis worked well with the team, including two first year, members; Rod Stauffer and Brian Rector. Unlike Auburn's one time state contending team, the golfers fell to a losing season this year. How- ever, the golf team did finish a respectable 7th out of 14 teams in the district meet held in Taylorville and a 7th out of 9 in the Carlin- ville Invitational. Seniors, Mark Dudley and Ty Hunt also participated well in both of these events. Four year man, Dave Marshall was awarded M.V.P. and brother. Pam Spoor broke a school record in scoring. The team picked up a reputation for their fantastic lay-up shooting. They also were given the nickname of Big Daddy and the Cheeze Ma- chine. There is no doubt the girls had a tough team this year and althogh they will be losing four sen- iors they should still have a very competitive team next year. This year the girls won the MSM Triangular trophy and the MSM Conference meet. At the district meet, the team took an overall 3rd place and sent the 400 meter relay on to the State M meet. The relay ended up with an impressive 6th place at State. All in all, the Trojan- ettes worked hard, proved it, and came out win- ners ... because they wanted to be. May 28th, 1990, when the Class of '80 celebrated the tenth anniversary of their graduation. Linda Chandler, always the class organizer, sent out invitations one year in advance to make sure all of our nation-hopping comrades would make it Mike Heren's Diner donated all of the food for the event, and The High-Way Tavern owned by Randy Angelo, Toby Bateman, and Rich Bender provided other diversions. The “Party to Beat All Parties was held at Norris Kessler Neverest Farms, which now covers all of the Midwest States. We hoped there would enough room, but with this crazy class, it was hard to tell. The gala event began at 8:27 that morning (in memory of the first hour bell). Many People began arriving at 8:00 in their limos, private jets, and helicopters. Laura Gibson. Becky Castleman. and Holly Burdine (prompt as always) arrived precisely at 8:30 and were issued Tardy Passes by Mr. Messmore. who was attending with Olympic skating coach. Alyson. First to arrive was Melissa Johnson, Presidential Advisor on State Parks and Forest Preserves. She was accompanied by forest rangers Doug Swift, Chuck Schultz, Alan Hinrichs. and Tom Baldwin. Next came Jerry and Gaye in their own custom-made recreational vehicle. Gary Atteberry, Don Dixon, Tom Horn, and John Lebel all attended in their home-made “rods with Tim Moats and Rick Gardner riding along on the bumpers (hoping for some slick spots). Artists Linda Woodside and Larry Baggerly were there (sort of). They sketched the scene from a helicopter piloted by Olympic basketball star, Pam Spoor. Doug Rahn a noted doctor in the study of the common cold, was accompanied by his medical side kicks. Sheila Castleman and Ronda Goodroe. Two groups of classmates who attended, have become infamous journalists. One group is made up of Sonya Gadberry, Brenda Fortner, Annette Stufflebeam, and Cheryl Caufield, who travel the country making speeches on the joys of motherhood and write a column similar to Erma Bombeck. The second group has taken over as Ann Landers love-life advisors and includes Jolene Hemberger. Gina Neumann. Nancy Ladage, and Tracy Sandidge. From talking with members of the class we found that, thanks to AHS's influence, many members of the class of '80 have gone into educational careers. Nate Bassett and Brenda Patrick are currently Professors at the U of I and team-tech a no-credit class entitled. “How to Become a Professional Student in 20 Easy Lessons. Tim Sergent is athletic director and janitor at A.H.S. Sandy Humphrey has been given a special medal by the President for becoming the first librarian to organize the Library of Congress. Nancy Grider and Michele Henkhaus are now educational advisors to the U.N. on “Wild and Crazy Teaching Styles . But it seems that Dave Marshall has made the greatest strides in education. The President of the Senior Class of '80 gestured this reporter over to his Rolls Royce and in confidence told me that he is presently a Professor at SIU-E teaching a new major entitled. Million Airism . Tom Cundiff attended with Jackie Gray. Nancy Hartman. Penny Mayberry, Karen Robinson. Mary Pierce. Kathy Winters, and Charlie Bell, all franchise owners of Tommy Wommy's Day Care Centers, Inc. with brances in Auburn, Chatham, Divernon, Thayer, Waverly. and Mars, respectively. Stacie Pitman has found permanent residence at Monmouth college working in the Marketing Dept, as Chief Executive. And here comes Joe Blackman who is currently playing tackle for the Chicago Bears, and Ty Hunt who shortened his football career in order to make movies with Jacques Cousteau. New owner of Cadillac Inc., Wally Kohler, has just arrived. Several members of this class have acquired high exposure jobs. These include: Mark Dudley who is Paul Harvey's sports equivalent. Deb Oberling who is permanet cover model for Vogue. Dave Rutherford who is a photographer and Editor-in-Chief of “Gentleman's Quarterly , and Matt Edminston who is a Freudian psycho-sociologist pondering the question. “What effect has the pencil had on society? Linda Loyd and Shelley Wilson provided entertainment for the class by doing their Solinsky Sisters impression with Long John Silver's hats on. After the show a round of applause was given to Felicia Marchizza for contributing her mathematic mind to figure the quantities of goods for the party. A fantastic time was had by all and as they bid farewell to each other with fond memories renewed, they promised to return in 10 more years for an even better time. But this was not the end. As they had always done at AHS. three other members of the class, Tammy Brown. Last of all Lu, what can I say to a girl that has more love than time can ask for. Lu there is nothing I can say or look back at that I regret. There are three words I can say to you and that is, I love you. I, Pam Spoor, being of original mind, and athletic body bequeath the following: To Gaye Ann Willoughby, my G-60's and posi-fraction rear end off my GTO for her Impala to use when cruising the strip on Friday nights, her own paper factory, for all the paper I've borrowed from her throughout high 108 school, and an extra ear for the 20 minute talks that lasted until 2 in the morning.
