We used this money for our annual Christmas feast and party and bought a stereo for enjoyment in the shop. Our club wishes our senior members the best of luck in their future. Club Of Representatives Student Council's first task of the new school year was to follow up on a request from students to change the Homecoming arrange- ments. In the past all Homecoming activities the parade, dance, and game, have been held on one day. With the support of the students and faculty. Student Council arranged for a two-day Homecoming Celebration. From now on the parade and the game will be held on Friday and the dance will take place on Sat- urday night. As well as the change in Home- coming activities. Student Council also spon- sored the crowning of the queen and helped organize the parade. They also picked up the tab on the Disco Sensations dance. In December the group had a Christmas decoration contest and a Christmas party for students and faculty. Also sponsored by Stu- dent Council was the notorious Gong Show and the Valentine's Day party where some of the teachers got to re-new old flames. During the month of April, Student Council organized Teachers Appreciation Day and be- gan the Student Council election process for the 1979 80 school year. , • Active Members: First row, left to right: Ketra Deschamps, f Gary Neumann, Michele Henkhaus, Mark Dudley, Joe Mi- . j chelich. We had a lot of fun by playing golf at Knight's Recreation and took a pitstop at the Pizza Hut before coming home. As our main money rais- er, the hotdogs sales held twice a month did really well. Sandy Humphrey precided at the section ral- ly, Ronda Goodroe presented the skill shop that she won first place on at the state. Several other mem- bers were hostesses at the mini sessions at the sec- tion ralley. We took a trip to Taylorville to see the annual farm progress show and saw alot of interest- ing farm equipment. For Homecoming, we entered a float called Headknockers . The club sponsored a drive for clothing, toys, and food for the needy at Christmas time. We gave boxes of gifts to five dif- ferent families. We combined our forces with FFA for the annual Sweetheart Dance. At Daddy Date Night, we treated our fathers to food and fun. Twenty members participated in the Section 3-D demonstration contest. We took our FHA trip to Illi- nois State University and Beich's Candy's and brought home alot of samples. We ended our 78-79 year with the Mother-Daughter Banquet and Instal- lation of Officers. £ Left to right, front row: Officers: Lucinda Beatty-President; Linda Loyd-Vice President; Felicia Marchizza-Treasurer; Nancy Grider-Recreation; Marilyn Thomas-Public Relations; Tracey Branham-Historian; Mickie Walker-Projects; Sandy Humphrey-Section 3-D President and Student Council Representative. The Library Club had two main events on their yearly agenda. In early October we began selling mums for Home- coming which is always a great money maker. These mums go to any highschool student, their mother or grand- mother who are interested in buying one. They always seem to brighten the spirits of everyone, especially at the Homecoming game. It is always a great inspiration to look up in the crowd and see over a hundred white mums with blue A's bouncing up and down from the cheering and yelling of the fans. Second was the trip to Lincoln Land Community College Library. We toured the huge building and were very much impressed by the facilities of LLCC. This trip was brought to an end with the venture on to the famous McDonalds. It's Our Kind Of Place! 34 Commerce Club has been active all year. At the beginning of the year the club went to the Farm Progress Show in Talorville. For money makers they sold Christmas decorations at Christ- mas time. They also printed a Trojan Echo that the club puts out each year. The club took a trip to the county building in the spring and the club also had a night out and they went to see a movie The Champ , and then they went out to eat. I know I was persistent and sometimes even crabby. But all is well, as they say, and our yearbook is done and in your hands, THANKS to the FAITHFUL FEW. I wish good luck to next year’s editor and sponsor in hopes that they can do a good job and never lose faith in themselves. Now I conclude and I hope you enjoy the “TROJAN’S CROSSROADS of 79’ Thanks again, Pam 37 Homecoming Activities 38 40 41 During the '78 Homecoming the Trojan Spirit was tremendous. The week's activities included Hat Day, Fifties Day, Mourn the Indians and Blue White Day. During noon we had a sock hop, a funeral for the Indians and a Pep assembly. Queen Karen Chambers reigned over the parade and was crowned at the game. The Trojan spirit wasn't enough to win the game. After the game we danced to the Disco Sensation. 42 SPORTS Through the year was like a traffic light. During football we had the green light. As time progressed, the light changed to yellow with volleyball and basketball, and came to the red light as track tennis, and baseball concluded. We await the green light again with the coming of fall. The 1978 edition of the Auburn Football Trojans guid- ed by Coach Tony Parola enjoyed a very successful season. The Trojans finished second in the M.S.M. The Trojans played hard, but recorded their only loss of the year, 14-7. They then went on with a 9-1 record. Tom Handy, Stan Loyd, Eric Barnes and Mike VanHuss received 1st team all- conference honors. Ken Karhliker, Tom Handy, and Stan Loyd received 2nd team all-conference, and Dave Bates received honorable mention The Trojans also had Gary Neumann, Tom Handy and Stan Loyd receive honors on the Sun Times Little All-State team. Gary Neumann led the team with thhe most tackles-60, Tom Handy, most yards rushed, and Stan Loyd most valuable player and interceptions. Auburn High's golf team had an outstanding record of 20-6 this sea- son. The team's 3-year record is 47- 10. Kent Dolenc, Joe Michelich, Dave Marshall, and Dan Marshall earned varsity letters. Ty Hunt and Rod Schumacher earned JV letters. Kent Dolenc was named MVP. He also had the lowest 9-hole average of 39.8. Joe Michelich averaged 41.3 and Dave Marshall followed with a 44.8 average. The golfers managed to win Dis- trict. Kent placed 3rd in district, while Joe placed 5th. Throughout the season no one finished first every- time. Dan finished first for the team one time, Joe two or three times and Kent thirteen times, Dave Mashall also finished first once. First-year coach Ed Lewis was not unhappy with the season. He noted the Trojans 3-year record of 47-10, 2nd place and 5th at state, and hopes that the success will continue. 47 Super Spikers The Varsity team had a good season winning 9 of the 16 games scheduled in the regular season. We also re- ceived a third in the Niantic Harris- town Invitational Varsity tournament. The squad was made up of one senior, one sophomore, and six juniors. We started out great winning the first three games. The girls went into the Virden district with four losses hoping for a win. We made it to the finals and lost in a good match against Northwestern. We didn't start out strong, but came back to win some matches and came close to winning many times. The team went into the MSM Frosh-Soph tournament with high hopes but lost to Lincolnwood In the first match. 49 Girls Basketball The season this year was like a rollercoaster, up and down. Mr. Parola took over as coach for the team's sec- ond season. After much hard work and practice we fin- ished the season by winning the New Berlin Invitational Tournament. Over all, GOOD GOING GIRLS! Over all we should have won more games than we lost, but we feel the players gained the experience to form a great Varsity team. They will be look- ing for these players in the next couple of years. Serveral individuals came up with impressive victo- ries during the schedule. Without excep- tion, the team as a whole came up with better match play each meet. All but one will be returning for the Trojan team. The experience gained so far will make next years team more confident. The 1979 boys tennis team did not fair well in the team victory category; howev- er, several individuals sparked upset victo- ries. The doubles team of Dan Stratton and Bob Sandoval came back to upset Mt. Pu- laski. Mark Langheim, in the singles match vs. Mt. Pulaski, pulled off a sudden death victory. Other players scoring victories were Rob Cameron and Rick Meidel. Freshman Doug Eastham will be looking for a good season next year after improving greatly this year. ACTIVITIES With evey project and every committee, with every last minute job and all the hassles and conflicts, there have been friends to make it worthwhile. Show 63 A Portrait After 20 times of dialing the phone and hanging up on the first ring, I finally let someone answer. It was her brother. I heard him say, it's a boy. Are you home? Not knowing what else to say, I acci- dently invited myself over to her house, hoping we'd end up ... alone. Coming from a family of 12, I knew what a bother little kids could be. We both concluded it wouldn't be a good idea to go to her house. I started to get my act together and remembered there was a good 99-cent special play- ing at Studio 97. Clearing my throat, I made the offer. Loose lips sink ships, and I was going down for the third time. She obviously had food on her mind, and I had only $2. I suggested that we go to this super place that looks kind of like a castle. It's all white and nice ... What's that. Steak and Ale? Well not exactly, but ... Gad, had I talked myself into a hole. $2, no drivers license ... the idea that I would borrow money from my Dad .. and have him drive us somewhere. I decided I had to change my approach; Frankly I don't give a damn about fancy dinner. I just want to be alone with you. How about a walk? 64 He finally did it! I knew that walking by his locker 10 times a day would eventually pay off. But come to my house? I nearly died. I know my Mom isn't keen about me having guys over. She's bound to send in the fearsome foursome to keep us occupied. There sim- ply had to be something better .... Movie? Hmmm ... I really wasn't in much of a mood to watch one or for some of that su- per buttered popcorn, and chewy candy. The excitement overtook me, and I hurriedly replied, Sure, when can we see the mov- ie? Boy, he is smarter than I thought. The idea of an expensive dinner on the town was just what I had in mind. Not Steak and Ale? Oh David Fong is a great place for a romantic candlelight dinner ... all alone with just you ... You Devil, you. I bet you had that up your sleeve the whole time. Boy, some guys surely have to hand a girl a long line before they get down to business. It sounds won- derful. You're so romantic to think of taking a walk when the moon is full. I'll never get cold, walking with you.... We made several pit stops on the way (for obvious reasons) and arrived at Cascade Mountain Ski Lodge at about 7:00 the next morning. Everybody was tired and not particularly enthused about the bag check that took place in the parking lot of the lodge with the temperature a balmy 10 degrees below zero. However, moments later all were ready to head for the slopes and most everyone did so. After working on the notorious Bunny Hill, by the end of the day Auburn's future Olympics entrants were zooming down the pro slopes with amazing speed and talent. Later that night another unfortunate incident happened and threatened to end the trip but again another compromise was reached and the fun continued. The second day was spent skiing in Wisconsin Dells., and many went shopping at the various tourists shops in town. Others who didn't ski the second day went tobogganing at the motel. Those who didn't go to the slopes the second day missed out on the daredevils Dolenc, Barnes, and Richey as they attempted to make it to the bottom of the infamous North Wall. Ask them about it... The entourage left the following morning at about 10:00 and traveled all day back to Auburn. We stopped in Rockford, LaSalle, Bloomington before reaching dear old Auburn about 7:00. And a good time was had by ALL ..... By 94 Joe Michellich 95 November 27, 1979 It was a so-so overcast, sunny day for the class of '79's 6 month reunion. We all met at that famous-not so famous meeting place; Neumann's Barn. We had a quarum with a unanimous decision to move to the Auburn Shell Station because the smell got a little intense at the barn. After proceding to the Shell Station, we found Larry Rolando as the new owner. Under his employment were Terry Castleman, Danny PIJ Bartlozzi, and Kent Miller. They've also started the Auburn Chapter of Our entertainment was provided by the world famous group MARZ who have just obtained their 6th gold record. In the group are Joe Michelich and Greg Ludek. Along with them are their two loyal groupies, Doris Patrick and Cindy Barnett. In- stead of listening to MARZ , others amuzed themselves by reading books by some of our own renowned authors of Auburn High School. Mark Langheim alias Mark Hampton has just come out with his new book, All the Questions You Have About Football Pools But Were Afraid to Ask, Jerry Harbour's How To Enjoy your Fifth Year of High School, Pat Corlas', How to Blow Up The School In Ten Easy Steps, Karen Gravit's, My Own Little World, Penny Shaw's, How To Make A Mil- lion As A Court Reporter, and Kent Dolenc and Michelle Zea are co-authors of, The Front Row of the Parking Lot Has Many Uses, Including Parking. Some of our guests were flown here today compliments of the Cimic Air Force Base headed by Col. Tim Sandidge. Working under him are Private 1st Class Carla Brian, Private 2nd Class Nancy Horn, and Private 3rd Class Jim Morris. Their motto is, If you can't fly, go with us sky high. Charles Brown, Tim Heren, Richard Michelich, Clarence Rasure, Gary Mendenhall, and Ron Williams are now awaiting admission into Tim's AFB. Jill Sheppard is now president of Planned Parenthood. Included in her staff are Chris Richey, chief gynecologist, and Tammy Sandness, head obstetrician.
