DAVID ANDERSON The Senior class of 1970 was the first class Mr. Anderson had upon his arrival in Auburn. He seldom spoke; but what he said was clear. And full of sense, so that you wished to hear, Of high ideals and virtue was his speech; And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach. Chaucer 3 DEDICATION The Senior Class of 1970 dedicate our yearbook to a man who is himself dedicated - Mr. William McCarthy. COACHES NEVER LOSE A team can lose. Any team can lose. But in a sense a very real sense a coach never loses. For the job of a coach is over and finished once the starting whistle blows. He knows he's won or lost before play starts. For a coach has two tasks. The minor one is to teach skills: to teach a boy how to run faster hit harder block better kick farther jump higher. The second task the major task is to make men out of boys. It's to teach an attitude of mind. It’s to implant character and not simply to impart skills. It’s to teach boys to play fair. This goes without saying. It's to teach them to be humble in victory and proud in defeat. This goes without saying. But more importantly it's to teach them to live up to their potential no matter what this potential is. It's to teach diem to do their best and never be satisfied with what they are but to strive to be as good as they can be if they tried harder. A coach can never make a great player out of a boy who isn't potentially great. But he can make a great competitor out of any child. For a coach the final score doesn't read so many points for my team so many points for theirs. Instead it reads: so many men out of so many boys And this is a score that is never published. And this is the score that he reads to himself and in which he finds his real joy when the last game is over. - copy unknown SUPERINTENDENT TO THE CLASS OF 1970 - As we move from the 60’s to the 70’s we are about to move into a new building. We are sorry your class was not able to avail themselves of these new facilities. We do hope it will be beneficial for classes who follow. Yours has been an outstanding class, however, and we know your goals will be reached regardless of any inconvenience you suffered because of physical facilities. We will not forget you now that you have graduated, but will be watching with in- terest your future achievements. W. G. Bird Superintendent PRINCIPAL MAX LESLIE As our society becomes more and more complex, education becomes more and more important to us. We must constantly broaden our knowledge if we are to understand and solve the many problems we face today and will face in the future. Burtle - sec. The Junior Class had a busy year during 1970. In starting the year, the class had a dunking machine at the Labor Day picnic. This was a good money-making project. Next came Homecoming which didn’t turn out too good for the Juniors. Their theme was: Redbirds Are Deadbirds. The Juniors placed second for die Christmas decorations. They did most of the work for concessions at basketball games. The two activities for the Juniors were the Junior-Senior play and the Banquet and Prom. Both were a complete success. 92 G. Celmer J. The Seniors successfully completed their final year at A. H.S. They started the year off right by winning die grand prize in the Homecoming float competition. Car washes, a bake- sale, and magazine sales added to their treasury. In May they enjoyed the prom given by the J uniats. Later in May they went to Pere Marquette State Park and to St. Louis for the Senior Trip. The final project was the yearbook, which took considerable time on the part of a few hard-working Seniors. Graduation Day, May 29, 1970, was the end of their days at A. H.S. and the beginning of a new life for many. EDWARD BERNARD BANCROFT A man who never makes any mistakes, does nothing. I also leave my little sister, Theresa, the ability to withstand and overcome all similar gossip and trashy thoughts that may arise about her like they did with me from all, tlje pseudo-friendships that have been prevalent in the past year. Futhermore, I leave herewith my point of view: These friends” are no better than their thoughts and the gossip that they spread. Leam to recognize your true friends. I only had one. I, KENT SOLLENBERG, being physically in tact and mentally aware, hereby leave to Coughlin my back issues of National Review; and to Mr. Stauffer I leave a combined collec- tion of the wardrobes of Tiny Tim and Liberace. To Dale Fuller I leave a twelve oz. bottle of estrogen and a culture medium to grow on. I, KARL STEIN, bequeath my somewhat sound and sober mind to anyone who might mess up their own. I, CINDY TOMARELLI, being of not too brilliant mind and body do hereby will Mr. Coughlin, our first hour combined Problems and Bookkeeping class, with hopes his next year's class will not have Bookkeeping after his Problems classes. I, GREG TOWNSEND, being of sound mind and body do hereby will to Greg Boesdorfer my spotlight and a better parking place and to Dale Fuller, 1'6” worth of growth. I, DEBBIE WHITE, being of sound mind and body, do hereby will my typing ability to Kathy Bowers and my tumbling ability to Becky Shaw. PROPHECY A Sunday afternoon 1980 at East Cotton Hill Park in Springfield, Illinois is the reunion of the CLASS OF 70. On the scene reporting is JANET MICHELICH, who is now Editor in Chief of the Daily Planet, with Clark KENT SOLLENBERGER acting as assistant reporter. The entertainment is arriving now with RICK NERONE, owner of Play Boy Club, and his personal bunny, DOLORES DERMINT. Refreshments are being provided by TIM FLANNIGAN. Tim now owns his own corporation, with a bull as his emblem. Food is being furnished to us by ROGER HOLMES and competitor DAVID LAS. Roger now owns Holmes Market Enterprizes and David is the proud owner of IGA Food chains. Food is being prepared by the President's own personal chef, RICK GAYDOS. We weren't sure if SALLY BARNES would make it today because McDonald’s is her kind of place. Things are now getting underway with the caravan of the Real McCOYS, following them is DONNA COPLIN. Behind them are two prospective brides, BETTY GUMM and DRUCILLA DINARDO. Pulling up in a camper must be, yes it is, stepping out is MARK PIG NON. Stepping out of a dump truck is JACK DIXON, President of Ditch Diggers. Now we see a starry object landing; it's ED BANCROFT, head of the Department of UFO's! Along with Ed is RICH DENNIS, head of Public Relations between Wisconsin and Illinois. Arriving now is a Standard Oil truck and in it is JOHN LeGRAND. Along with John is MIKE GRIDER. Mike is the head of the Bailey Bookkeeping Enterprises. Many of our distinguished guests were flown on TWA with GREG TOWNSEND acting as chief pilot. Greg's two head stewardesses are MAURINE SMITH and DOLORES LOVELL. Stepping up with a mess of tools is JOHN NICHOLLS now owner of Nicholl's hardware and DALE WILSON, who has taken over A R Auto Repair. Here is a group of people in a crowd. My goodness! They are crowded around the very distinguished JOHN MICHELICH who is the President of the US. Along with John is ANDREA MILLER who is now playing the piano for Lawrence Welk. It looks like a great day in politics. We have PAUL NICHOLAS who is now Governor of Kansas, and THERESA NORRIS, mayor of Norrisville. Secretaries seem to be the thing this year. Now coming into the scene is JANET CACCIATORI, JUDY CACCIATORI, KAY CRAIN, and DEBBIE WHITE. CINDY TOMARELLI and DEBBIE THORNTON are walldng up now. The two ladies are now very famous hairdressers. Their chauffeur is Pamelli COBURN. AH in white is Admiral DWIGHT W. PITMAN and his wife LYNETTE K. EVANS PITMAN. The two have taken over Bethesda Naval Hospital. Along with them are their two side kicks, JANET MULLEN and JANE POTTS who are also supervisors of their own hospitals. On the sporty end of the party are JACK MESSMORE, world's highest pole vaulter; JIM LOVELL, head coach of the Green Bay Packers; RON ERVIN, who was All Star end at Eureka; and VAUGHN CHARLES, pit crewman at the Indy 500. Here is JAY WITHERS, Secretary of Agriculture and Assistant CHUCK HAMILTON. They are dressed for a busy day in the field. Following them is RAY TIMKO, head of the Depart- ment of Interior. All dressed up in their uniforms are PATTY RENKEN and STEVE McGREW. Steve now owns the Largest parking lot and Patty is his head Meter Maid. PAUL DUFOUR has taken over Iris family tradition. Instead of raising chickens, he's raising ducks. Accompanying Paul is the mad scientist GARY PALMER. Zooming into the scene is KENT RICHMOND, Kent owns Honda, Incorporated. JIM SHAW acts as Kent's top mechanic. We almost forgot to mention TOM RIGG. Tom has been head Drum Major of the Rose Bowl Parade for some time now. Not far behind Tom is ALICE MANSHIP. Alice has been donating her time to the Peace Corps for some time also. Now we have a couple of school teachers with us. They are, MARY CROWE, all physi- cally fit, and SUE OPOLKA, with music coming from her ears. Tailing behind, we have KATHY COOK, who now owns Chatham Lanes. Along with Kathy is KARL STEIN. Karl owns his own chain of pool halls. As we look around at all the fine, successful people from the class of 1970” we can't help but think that they will always remain the best.
