Miss Riemer with the second year members, N Harrison, and D. Perardi. A. K S. H o n o r s Each year five per cent from the junior class and fifteen per cent from the senior class are selected by the faculty to become members of the National Honor Society. Chosen on the basis of character, service, leadership, and scholarship, these students are believed to be outstanding members of their classes and school. Personal achievements, scholarship, and extra-curricular activities are all considered in this selection which is made during the latter weeks of the school year. The culmination of Awards Night comes with the induction of the new National Honor Society members. After hearing the qualifications and goals of the National Honor Society, each new member is requested to light a candle signifying either character, leadership, service, scholarship, or life, and to sign the Auburn National Honor Society register. The new members are then admonished to always live up to the high standards, which in joining the Society, they have pledged to seek.

A. H. S. H o n o r s STUDENT COUNCIL AND OFFICERS D. Perardi, V. -Pres.; J. Herron, Reporter; L. Ragsdale, Sec.; J. Tranquilli, Pres.; Miss Riemer, Adv.; Mr. Rolando, Adv. FIRST ROW: Miss Riemer; B. Buch- anan; L. Ragsdale; J. Grayson; S. Farris; Mr. Rolando. SECOND ROW: J. Herron; D. Perardi; D. Adcock; A. Taylor; S. McCarthy. THIRD ROW: B.Lorton; J. Tranquilli; J. Gilmore; M. Bertoux. One of the first and most important events of the 1961-1962 school year was the election of the Student Council President. The Student Council Constitution specifies that the president must be from either the junior or the senior class. Thus each of these classes nominates a candidate, and the entire student body then chooses from these two excell- ent candidates. This past autumn the junior class nominated Bob Ihlenfeldt and the senior class nominated John Tranquilli, who was elected as the 1961-1962 Student Council President. The three main purposes of the Auburn High Student Council are to provide order in student activities, to gain experience in the running of a democratic form of govern- ment, and to improve student participation in the activities and projects of the school. During the past year the Student Council furnished flowers to the teachers on the first day of school, and a dance was sponsored later to welcome the new freshmen. The Student Council was also active in the planning of the Homecoming. Popcorn at the football and basketball games, the co-operation banner, and the teacher appreciation day were also sponsored by the Student Council.
