Only the English and athletic departments underwent changes from that of the previous year. Mr. Ketchum, sophomore English teacher, was also the varsity wrestling coach and served as assistant football coach. Volunteering his services was assistant football coach, Steve Dingman. Basketball was also subject to coaching changes as Mr. Kleine became girls’ head basketball coach and Charlie Doeden became boys’ head reserve coach. CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: I. Members also hiked to raise money for the national chapter and sold cook books to raise money for the American Cancer Society. In the fall the girls held a spaghetti supper for the football players and cheerleaders. Becky Hamilton won a gold medal and Jodee Filbrandt won a silver at the Search events in Nebraska City. Members also attended the district convention in Louisville and the state in Lincoln. Besides their weekly meetings, they participated in the Weekend of Champions held in Fremont, an area Day of Champions, and a iock-in at the Christian Church. Membership increased to thirty-five, and members attended more of the functions set up by the art teacher, Mr. Thacker. Lincoln, Omaha and Kansas City were some of the cities visited by the club. Songs included were, “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightning, ” “Freddy My Love, ” “Sandra Dee,” and “We Go Together.” “Grease” was one of the most successful productions that Auburn High School has produced. They finished first in the Peru State Contest and third at the four state Northwest Missouri State Contest. Capping the year, was a I rating at District Music Contest. This was the first year swing choir was a separate class. The experiment seemed to work as it is part of next year’s curriculum. It gave students a chance to become familiar with many different types of music, and it gave them a chance to discover talents he or she may not have known they had. It was the story of two charming and innocent old ladies, Lisa Krueger and Shauna Johnson, who populate their cellar with the remains of socially and religiously “acceptable” roomers; the antics of their brother, Mike Root, who thinks he s Teddy Roosevelt; the activities of the other brother, Steve Bath, who tries to make sense of these activities; and their brother Jonathan, Doug Kampe, who visits them while he hides from the police with his partner in crime Dr. Einstein, Chris Pippert. Some of the vocational courses this year offered challenges to the students of A.H.S. Home-economics offered such classes as adult living, foods, independent living, and child development. Child development involved such activities as having playschool for children for a week. Mrs. Lepert played her part by becoming pregnant second semester. Shop promised such activities as mechanical drawing mainly for frosh, metals, advanced woods, and carpentry were other classes for the upper classmen. Tuesday, students wore black in mourning of the opponents. Costumes were worn to represent favorite movie stars on Wednesday. Thursday was “wear your team’s jersey” day with the final day being spirit day. A pep rally was held downtown with Randy Gottula as guest speaker. Seniors were announced winners of the inches of spirit contest. Grapple rs qualified three for state competition this year: senior Mike Meyers with a 20-10 season record, junior Dave Pieters with a 22-10 record, and Dan Haynes, sophomore, with a record of 20-12. Haynes led the team with 23 takedowns. Pieters led pins with 16. Also outstanding for the year was senior Tom Thompson who compiled a 15-5 record before a knee injury forced him out of competition. Tenacious defense led the Bulldogs to their first winning season since 1975. Under the direction of second year head coach Chet DeVaughn, the Dogs captured the championship at the Fairfax Tournament and upended state-rated Nebraska City. Leading the statistical category was senior Doug Kampe. He averaged 12.7 pts. per game and was among the state leaders in rebounding with a 10.7 average. Mike Gerdes led in both assists and steals. The second leading scorer for the season was junior Steve Patras with an 11.0 average. Bryan Clark broke two school records in the 1600 and 3200 meters with times of 4:21.3 and 9:12.9. Clark finished second at state in both events. His 3200 meter time placed him third on the state’s all time track charts. Mike Gerdes also qualified for the state in the 800 meter run but failed to place. Coaches for this year were Dennis Brady, Bob Kechley, and Randy Cordes. Underclassmen led the lady harriers to a very successful track season. Freshmen Brenda Bollinger and Kim Schlange qualified for the state tournament in the 3200 meter run and the long jump respectively.
