Queen Homecoming '81 started with a week of spirit days: Overall, Clash, Punk Rock. Armed Forces, and Red and White. On Friday a dance contest was held during the pep rally, with guest speaker Dr. John Crotty. The juniors were announced as inches of spirit winners. Pep club decorated the halls in the theme Top Forties . During halftime of Auburn's (38-12) win over Fairbury, Jenny Vlach was crowned queen. After the game, the homecoming festivities continued with the dance for which Horizon supplied the music. Dave Kimball was crowned king, preceding a royalty dance led by Jenny and Dave. Darren Lunzmann discusses computers with a computer school representative. Career Night offers a bright future The annual career night, sponsored by the Student Advisory Board, was held in the fait. This evening gave students the opportunity to visit with representatives from many colleges as well as from the armed forces. 8 Fiddler follows excellent tradition With two months of reheorsal behind them, the large cast performed Fiddler on the Roof on Nov. 10 and 12. The story was about a poor Jewish family in the period before the Russian Revolution. The evening was filled with music and dancing. including such hit songs as: If I Were a Rich Man , Match Maker , and Sunrise Sunset . Cast members included: Steve Bath. Shauna Johnson. Sponsors Mr. Wetenkamp, Mr. Thacker, and Mr. Artist took turns holding the meetings in their homes on Sunday nights, with special fun and game nights held in the gym from time to time. Members took part in singing songs, Bible studies, and eating lots of popcorn at the meetings. Sponsors Mr. Thacker and Mr. Wetenkamp discuss plans to attend Chariots of Fire In Omaha 11 Math Science members enjoy busy year The members of Math and Science Club this year kept busy with monthly meetings, educational trips, and money-making projects for the spring trip to Colorado. The educational trips were to Lincoln and Omaha and included tours of Wesleyan University, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. These included a walk-a-thon. selling Valentine carnations. and working at concession stands. Proceeds from the walk-a-thon went to help finance a new addition to the National Headquarters in Washington D.C. They a'so took a trip in the spring. The club initiated 14 new members. Choirs improve during '81-'82 year 16 Under the leadership of a new choir director, Mr. Roger Kelley, the choirs performed three public concerts during the year. Many superiors were received at the district music contest held in April. Those who received I ratings were: Jody Allgood, Steve Bath, the boys' octet, Vickie Colgrove, the girls' sextet, Cara Ramsay, and the concert choir. Band earns all Tsin superior year The Auburn band had a very successful season along with seven area parades they received superiors at the P atts-mouth and Pershing Marching Contests. Brass section rehearses for upcoming concert 19 There were two stage bands in the high school this year. and they performed at several concerts and contests including the spring stage band concert and the Bellevue East Jazz Contest. In October, initiation was held for 22 new members, bringing the total to 31. Art professor Paul Fell was guest speaker. A Halloween Party, featuring original costumes was held in latter October. In November, Neil Munson, a woodcraft artist, presented his works at an evening meeting. February brought a day trip to Lincoln, including Sheldon Gallery. Elder Gallery, Haymarket Gallery, and Elephant Hall. May culminated the year with a trip to Kansas City to the Nelson Gallery and a hopeful trip to Pioneer Village for seniors, and viewing of the Thomas Moran exhibition at BrownviUe. High School .vi2 j.,uer Auburn, Nabr. 21 Woods and weddings highlight voc arts Vocational arts students began their freshman year with drafting and wood working making cutting boards and chairs. Metals classes made benches, tables and tools. Juniors were introduced to such projects as cedar chests, grandfather docks, and waterbed frames. Seniors made scale model houses and feeder boxes for cattle in carpentry class. Home economics classes covered such objects as mock weddings and receptions and dating and marital relationships. Using table saw h woods is John Jones. 22 Business offers variefy to students Students were given a variety of subjects to choose when selecting courses of study in business. Courses in typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, general business and office practices were offered. Eighteen students participated in the Peru State Business contest with Hayley Fulton placing third in economics and Beth Ely placing fifth in shorthand I. CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: 1. Theresa Vlach, along with classmates, prepares for a timed writing. 23 AHS journalism staff pursues new ideas 1981-82 presented a new challenge to this year's journalism staff. In addition to the publication of the yearbook, a weekly radio show was produced and aired on 105.5 FM KAUB. From the first day students learned techniques of cropping pictures, designing layouts, proof reading, writing copy, and taking pictures. Staff members for the ’81-'82 year were Scott Bannon. The National Honor Society honored a select few of this year's juniors and seniors during an evening ceremony held in the media center. Members were chosen through secret ballot by the faculty. The only requirement needed for consideration was a cumulative grade point of 3.0. These students fullfilled the scholarstic requirement and showed themselves to possess three other basic qualities believed worthy of honor: character, leadership, and service. Members of the cast were Steve Bath. Jennifer Deselms. Debbie Dietrich. Shauna Johnson. Blaine Jorgensen, Doug Kampe, Pete Kleinjan, Lisa Krueger, and Lisa Pratte. The following month students entered contests at Nebraska City and districts. Those students competing were: Steve Bath, poetry and interpretation of drama: Shauna Johnson, interpretation of drama.; Lisa Krueger, interpretafion of drama; Tom Liewer, informative public address. AH the above qualified for sfafe competition in Kearney with Steve Bath placing fifth in state. Students from Auburn who took part in the event were: Co. Welfare officer - Jodee Filbrandt and Tammy Filbrandt: Co. Veterans officer - Mike Myers and Jan Brueggemann: Co. Banquet honors AHS letterwinners 32 On Monday May 3rd. the 1981-82 AHS athletes were recognized at the all sports banquet. The master of ceremonies was Randy Gottula. The invocation was given by Delane Durham. FCA president. Introducing the coaches and letter winners was athletic director Ted Russ. Those letterwomen earning special awards were Vickie Col-grove, Junior Women's Club volleyball trophy and outstanding girl athlete (Julie Moe Catlett Memorial Trophy); Tammy Fil-brandt. Junior Women's Club girls basketball trophy. Lettermen receiving awards were Rich Alden, Kiwanis Club football trophy award; David Kimball. Rotary Club boys basketball trophy award and Dave Swinney memorial all sports award; Lanny Smith, Jaycees wrestling trophy; and Paul Berger, KAUB Sportsmanship Award. Red wave claims second at state meet 38 The Bulldog harriers finished second out of eighteen teams in the class B state meet at Kearney. Bryan Clark placed second. He had 9 kickoff returns for 258 yds., and led the offensive club with 300 points. Robert Jones led receiving with 125 yds. Rollie Clark caught the most passes, 6, for 123 yds. With 82 points Charlie Allen led the defensive team. Kevin Meyers added 539 yards rushing. Robert Jones was one for two on field goals, hitting at 23 yds. He was 12 for 17 on P.A.T. attempts. Paul Berger 40 Auburn grapplers send 3 to state Representing Auburn High at the state wrestling meet this year were: Chris Wiggs. whose season mark was 10-8-1, he wrestled in the 105 pound weight class; Lanny Smith, our 112 pound wrestler, who finished the year at 17-4, and Tom Thompson, our 119 pound wrestler with the record of 14-9. High scorer for the team was Danny Hatten with 87 points. Next in line was Greg Andrew with 75 points. The reserves averaged 33 points a game with their opponents averaging 39. The freshmen ended the season with a 6-2 record. Alan LaFallette led in scoring with 73 points and Kevin Mowery was second with 68 points. Bryan Clark, who broke the school record in the 3200 meter run did not place, however, teammate Chris Wiggs finished sixth ahead of Clark's seventh place. The 3200 meter relay record of 8:19.5 was firmly beaten by this year's new record of 8:05. The relay team consisted of Tim Spear, Mike Gerdes, Andrew Jacobsen, and Brian Bradley. They placed 4th at state. Tim Spear broke the 800 meter record and the 1600 meter record. He did not place in the 800 at state, however his time of 4:27 in the 1600 meter run led the state. Dave Kimball led the team in scoring beating Bryan Clark by one point. At state tournament the golfers took a close 6th place with in 6 strokes of second. The inexperienced reserves came back strongly at the end of the season. They finished with a 2-4 dual record. Tuning up their schedules with electives, juniors participated in chemistry, trigonometry. accounting, and advanced biology.
