Faculty, administrators, and students added their special efforts to provide a personal quality to each activity. From classroom work to extra-curricular activities, individuality was stressed. Joining the staff were new superintendent Kenneth Fossen, Counselor William Hakonson, English teacher Bryan Ferris, Home Ec. instructor Gay Windhorst. Superintendent Fossen has a degree in law also working for a doctorate in education. Mr. Hakonson previously taught at Creighton Nebraska. Mr. Hakonson is currently occupied with psychology class and guidance duties. Mr. Ferris is teaching English and assisting in basketball and football. Coach Birdsley studies the volleyball statistics. 17 ■ Kitchen begins new lunch program 18 Bulldogs go Hawaiian for homecoming The 1980 Homecoming theme was Hawaiian Luau. During the week there were many acitivies to raise spirit. Among these were the inches of spirit contest won by the freshmen, hat day, security day and inside-out day. The pep rally was held in the east parking lot with guest speaker Dale Thomas. Various skits were also performed. A damper was put on the evening as the Bulldog football team was defeated 28-15 by the Tecumseh Indians. During halftime of the game, Alicia Teten was crowned homecoming queen by Pep Club President Joyce Mellage. The dance was held at the high school with music provided by Daddy Warbucks. Tanya Gilliland, and Debbie Heidzig watch the game from the sidelines. 21 Fall play scores with “Curious Savage” Ten million dollars and greedy stepchildren set the stage for the fall play “The Curious Savage.” The play is about a widow who is left ten million dollars by her husband; she is left to do what she wants with it; There is one catch: the stepchildren are also trying to con the money from her. Finding that they wouldn’t be receiving any money, they commit her to a “sanatorium”. While committed, she learns the inmates are more “sane” than the outside world. Cast members rehearse a scene from inside the sanatorium. 22 Spring play gives “The Full Treatment” Discovery of a marriage which has lasted for light years prompts a newspaper to publicize the elderly couple and shower them with gifts; they were given the “Full Treatment.” Members of the cast were: Steve Bath, Chris Bratcher, Jennifer Deselms, John Henning, Shauna Johnson, Doug Kampe, Dave Kimball, Lisa Krueger, Greg Pippert, Lisa Pratte, and Suzanne Slater. Cake raffles were held during basketball season, and a potluck dinner climaxed the year’s activities. Referees stop action for enthusiastic cheer. 24 Election of officers highlights pep club 25 FCA members join hands in fellowship With the help from Mr. John Wetenkamp the Fellowship of Christian Athletes expanded their 81” activities. The group met once a week to discuss a Biblical chapter, sing songs, and enjoy refreshments. Trips were taken to Omaha where members attended concerts by Roger Cooper and comedian Mike Warnke. FCA spent a weekend in Fremont at the Weekend of Champions” competing with other FCA teams. The year ended with FCA hosting a Fun and Games night and a cookout. TOP TO BOTTOM: 1. The club raised money through their concession stand and by holding their annual soup supper and bake sale. New members were initiated during the ceremony at the middle school. On clean-up crew is Steve Bath. 27 Trip to Lincoln highlights year for FHA FHA expanded activities to a variety of areas this past year. Members began the year with a Fall picnic and attended the district FHA convention at Filley. During the winter months they operated the concession stand during basketball games and ended the first semester with a Christmas party. Culminating the year was a trip to the state FHA convention at Lincoln and a spring camp-out, where new officers were installed. TOP TO BOTTOM: 1. Spanish Club explores foreign cultures Spanish Club explored the many interesting cultures of the Mexican, South America and Spain. They made pinatas and had several fiestas. The members of the club went to Omaha and ate in the Old Market. Afterward they went to Gizmos and to the various other shops. Back in school, posters and murals were made to decorate the classroom. The group was responsible for convocations and the establishment of the academic letter distribution. To be eligible for an academic letter a student must have been on the honor roll the third and fourth quarters of the previous school year and the first and second of the present year. Students and parents participate in college night, a SAB sponsored activity. 30 Riverside Junction displayed their singing ability at various community functions at Wheeler Inn, Legion Club and the FHA Convention at Filley. At the District Music Contest on April 25, they received a superior rating. The annual swing choir concert was held on April 13. The Swing Choir ended by performing for the grade schools. Beach boys routine rocks swing choir 31 Superior rating goes to concert choir Mr. Werning’s first year at Auburn brought the school a superior rating at districts. Many students won individual honors at districts. Shelly Eash received a II for her performance in the girls’ high voice. Susan Bath earned a I in the girls’ low voice. Steve Bath and Chris Bratcher each won a superior for the boys’ low voice. The boys’ octet took a superior as did the girls’ triple trio. The choir also made an appearance at the Christian Church for the annual Christmas concert. They also had a spring concert at the middle school in May. Freshmen-Sophomore swing choir performs at district. 33 Bulldog band Highlighting the year for the Bulldog band and drill team was a May trip to St. Louis where they marched in the Valley of the Flowers parade. Band students also participated in the District II music contest. Earning a superior rating were: Blaine Jorgensen, Linda Vollertson, and Janet Edgerton-saxaphone trio; Denise Bollen, Gwen Jantzen, Vickie Colgrove, and Janis Hollenbeck-mixed clarinet quartet; Chris Delay-tympani; Blaine Jorgensen-tenor sax; and the stage band. The drill team remained active throughout the marching season. Linda Vollertsen was voted outstanding stage band member by the rest of the members. 36 Art students “draw up” club charter Art took a new turn at Auburn this year with the establishment of an Art Club. One of the club’s first projects was to paint a mural at the Good Samaritan Center. Classes were also expanded to include pottery, crafts, drawing, art, and individual study. CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: 1. Vicki Westerfield, and Shelly Smith. 37 Vocational classes build on the future Vocational trades were busy in the 1981 year preparing students for their future. Shop classes offered vocational carpentry, vocational building, mechanical drawing, general metals, and drafting. These classes aided students planning to enter mechanical trades. Miss Windhorst taught home economics students showing them ideas ranging from cooking to planning weddings. Other courses offered included fashion design, family planning and sewing. Andrew Jacobsen concentrates while working with an acetylene torch. 38 Business students place 3rd at Peru AHS business students finished the season by competing at the Peru State College business contest. Mike Henderson tries hard to do well on a 5 minute timed writing. 39 The ’81 Bulldog staff combined hard work and determination to produce this year's annual. Staff members used ingenuity to implement the theme throughout the book. Teamwork was a necessity but the students’ own individuality was very eminent. Photographers used areas of community interest to catch groups such as the class officers on camera. In addition to putting together the annual, students learned the finer points of camera operation and development of film. Bulldog Staff exhibits individuality TOP TO BOTTOM: 1. The team won the Nemaha Valley Invite, Syracuse Invite, and placed second at Peru Invite. Leading the varsity stats was Alicia Teten, with 95% serve success, 87% spike success, 33 ace serves, and 137 total points. Also leading stats were Tami Allen with 20 blocks and Debbie Heidzig with set percentage at 95. Letter winners were Tami Allen, Peggy Allgood, Chris DeLay, Debbie Heidzig, Shauna Johnson, Joyce Mellage, Tonya Shoopman, and Alicia Teten. The reserves ended with a winning 5-2 season. Although not a winning season, it was an improvement as the cagers won more games than the three previous years. The team placed second at the Fairfax Invitational and third at the Adams Invite. The year ended with a district loss to Norris. Leading the team in scoring and rebounding was Scott Hannaford as he averaged 17 points per game. Grapplers take two to final mat meet Auburn’s varsity wrestling team finished the year with a 1-4 dual record and sent two wrestlers to state in a rebuilding year. The team lost only two seniors, Sterling Haynes and Bill Westerfield. Sterling was the top wrestler as he finished the season with a 28-2 record and a second place finish at state. He led the team in pins with 15 and ended his career with a 78-33 record. Junior Lonny Bantz completed the year with an 18-7-1 record. Lonny also competed at state in the 98 lb. division. One was in the high jump with a 51 leap by Tonya Shoopman, and the other was made by Jody Allgood with a 13.24 time in the 3200 meter run. The girls finished fifth at the Peru invite with 20Vi points, and seventh at the Plattsmouth invite, but lost in a Nebraska City dual by a margin of 61 to 53. With only three seniors leaving the team (Jerry Dill, Sterling Haynes, and John Henning) the following year should prove even more successful. Tim Spear went to state competition with a qualifying time in the 3200 meter run at districts. 69 Sophomore Jan Brueggemann led the team with two fourth place finishes at invitational meets and a fourth at district. This district showing advanced Jan to the state meet in Lincoln where he tied for twelfth place. On the way to the top the class of 82 found many obligations to their class. The most important event for the juniors was their first experience hosting the prom. In order to achieve their goal of $1900 they sold magazines and worked long and hard hours at football concession stands. Although many had to work, juniors had some time off to buy and compare the many different styles of class rings. Their class rings made them feel that they had reached their goal of being an upperclassman. On the classroom agenda was the course of American History, in which students took time out to participate in our government by serving a one day term in our county offices. Many freshmen adapted quickly but some were slow to learn the new room numbers and to memorize their schedules.
