Bulldogs preserve memories in graffiti The graffiti of Auburn high students was filled with memories of a year of diverse activities. From the opening day soap game, girls' and boys' sports events, school plays, to homecoming, prom, and graduation, each event added more graffiti of good times. 4 5 6 Students look ahead to new leadership Replacing last year's principal, Marvin Cerdes, was Dr. Robert Lohrberg. He had many challenges to meet during his first year, including student, teacher, and school board affairs. Dr. Lohrberg enjoyed watching and supporting the many extra-curricular activities and organizational functions of the school. Mrs. Hazel Keithley prepares to serve lunch. 16 Bulldogs show way to Sesame Street Despite a Friday the 13th date for homecoming, spirit remained high for the annual event. The marching band led the parade downtown for a rally on the post office lawn. The juniors received the inches of spirit award, and Dale Thomas, class of '78, was guest speaker. Halls were decorated by the classes and were judged by faculty on art work and application of the homecoming theme Sesame Street. Juniors won first place with seniors taking second. Although the Waverly Vikings claimed a (39-13) victory over the Auburn Bulldogs, the homecoming festivities carried on. At halftime, Deirdre Fike was crowned queen. Dan Panning and his date enjoy the homecoming dance while Tom Shires discusses the game. 18 Picnic, awards make '79 pep club season A pot-luck picnic held at the Legion Memorial park in August of 1978 started the 1978-79 pep club season. Games were played and new members were introduced to the previous members. Throughout the year, the pep club supported various sports activities, had cake raffles, took charge of homecoming, and sponsored a jean dance with disco music. The year ended with a dinner during which awards were presented. Mrs. Heller and Mrs. Rarick were given special gifts from the pep club. The latter received a plaque with the engraving: To Mrs. Rarick for her faithful service to the AHS pep club from 1964 to 1979. Suzanne North received a gift for being a cheerleader all four years of high school, and president Lori Kimball was presented gifts for her service. High point award winners and seniors who had been in pep club four years were recognized. The awards went to: Marla Moody, junior; and Patty Byfield, senior. Nancy Miller was named overall high point winner, because she accumulated the most pep club points during the year. 20 CLOCKWISE FROM BELOW. 1. Comedy highlights Babes in Arms Songs of Rogers and Hart were sung November 7 and 9 by a cast of 23 in the musical comedy Babes in Arms. The comedy centered around problems encountered by young performers in a summer theater. The members of the cast included: Fred Allen, Cecil Basset, Susan Bath, Annette Bohling, Bruce Bollen, Patty Byfield, Lorrie Curnes, Mike Eash, Cara Fritsch, John Henning, Jeff Jones, Janie Kampe, Dave Kimball, Lori Kimball, Brenda Lash, Tom Liewer, Nancy Miller, Rob Mowery, Andy Oestmann, Shari Oestmann, Dan Panning, Scott Shoff, Susan Thies. Murder can be fun in Real Inspector On the eve of April 10, at the middle school auditorium, two critics enter their box, one is lustful and the other is a substitute for the regular critic. Inspector Hound (Dan Panning) enters the scene at Muldune Manor to find Shari Oestmann, as Lady Muldune and Susan Thies, as her friend, suspects in the mystery murder play, The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard. Members of the cast were Perry Clark, Mike Eash, Jeff Jones, Lori Kimball, Keith Long, Shari Oestmann, Dan Panning, Greg Pippert, and Susan Thies. Speech team sends six to state contest Upstairs, Sleeping, the one act play, received a superior rating at district contest held at Peru State College. With their qualifying rating, the members of the play, Jeff Jones, Shari Oestmann, Mike Eash,and Lori Kimball, went to state contest at Kearny. Students going to Conference Contest held at Nebraska City were: Mark Bath, Cecil Bassett, Lori Kimball, and Jeff Kistner. Superior ratings were received by Mark Bath in poetry and Lori Kimball in informative speaking. District speech contest, was also held at Nebraska City, where Lori Kimball and Mark McKercher received superiors. With these qualifying I's, these two went to state contest also held at Kearny. 25 Concert choir gives three performances Auburn high school's choir gave three performances during the year, consisting of the Christmas concert, spring concert, and district music concert. At the spring concert, Annette Bohling received a special national choral award, given to one senior every year. Participating at the district music contest, Auburn received 10 superiors and two excellents. Those receiving 1's were choir, swing choir, Annette Bohling, Nancy Sullivan, Jeff Jones, David Kimball, Mark Palmerton, girl's double sextet, girl's sextet, boy's quartet. Those receiving division 2's were Lori Kimball and John Henning. Mrs. Lessor concentrates on her music before the concert. 26 Swing choir helps Everybody Rejoice Everybody Rejoice from the musical The Wiz was just one of the songs that Riverside Junction performed. The swing choir displayed their singing ability at many different community functions at Arbor Manor, Country Club and Wheeler Inn. Swing Choir did not only perform in Auburn but also at Westside Jazz Festival in Omaha. At the District Music Contest on April 21, they received a superior rating. The annual swing choir concert was held on April 29. The swing choir ended their year with a party at Lake Wa-Con-Da. COUNTERCLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: 1. While playing Santa Anna they moved to a rock beat and while playing Most Royal Count they moved to a jazz beat. The stage band played for many different audiences. They began the year by playing mini-concerts for the elementary schools in Auburn and Peru. The spring stage band concert featured the middle school and high school stage bands. They also played for family night at the country club and for the Bowling Association Banquet. They climaxed the year by receiving a superior rating at district music contest. Fred Allen received the David Whitehouse memorial award. Stage band acts as a back up band while Jeff Jones sings Sir Duke . 29 30 Nine straight one's win district contest On November 4, the band performed Broadway Show Stompers at Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln where they received their first division I rating in AHS history. Although Pershing was the highlight of the year, many performances were still to come. At the Mid-Winter Concert, the guest conductor, Claude T. Smith, a famous music composer, conducted the middle school and high school in songs that he had composed, some of which are Declaration Overture . Anthem for Winds and Percussion, March Spiritoso, and God of Our Fathers. On April 20 and 21, the district music contest was held where they entered 12 events, Superiors were: band, stage band, Keith Long, Linda Vollertson, Chris DeLay, Ann DeBuhr, and Patty Byfield. Excellents were: flute trio, Shari Oestmann, Fred Allen, Lori Niemann, and Roger Strumpler. The year ended with the all-school band concert where all four bands played. The John Philips Sousa Award was given to Lori Kimball. Some were cake raffles, stuffed pillow raffles. They also put on a fashion show of dresses contributed by Hemmingsen's at the annual mother-daughter tea. Cora Flynn reads dialogue for the fashion show. 32 Enthusiasm sends club to Washington The math and science club completed a successful year of bake sales, candy sales, and a soup supper in preparation for their educational trip to Washington D.C. Inflation forced the club members to sell more soup supper tickets to cover expenses. The club initiated 26 new members on February 6. This initiation was different from previous years, because the Greek alphabet recitation was held in private. Enthusiasm is a must at meetings as Rhett McMichen illustrates. 33 34 Variety highlights Spanish club year Spanish club members were kept busy this year beginning in early fall with a trip to Boys Town for a flamenco performance. Christmas time offered an opportunity for a pinata party followed by fund raising at basketball concession stands. Members of the club painted a large bullfight mural for decoration in the Spanish room. As the year ended, a Spanish dinner was held at the high school and, also, a spring picnic of grilled steaks and tortilles was enjoyed. Members acted as traditional guides during parent-teacher meetings. The boys decided to try out their talents cooking and sewing in home-ec while the girls constructed lamps and other projects in shop classes. Mr. Robert Uhri taught chemistry, physics, and senior science. Mr. Bennett returned to AHS to teach biology and advanced biology. Some of these new techniques were papier mach , pottery candles, and the other art projects. Many of the art students had some of their different projects displayed in the show cases outside the art and science departments. Coach Rich Birdsley, assisted by Jim Kearney, Bob Kechley, and Ted Russ, lettered 23 players. Offense was lead by quarterback Dave Sanders, with Tom Shires leading rusher with 993 yds. Defense was lead by Jerry Whisler with 206 pts. Tom Gulizia was leading receiver with 13 for 189 yds. and 3 touchdowns. Gulizia also set a new record with 14 kickoff returns for 423 yds. Tom Shires fights for tough yards. 51 Frosh undefeated; reserves develop Coach Curnes' freshman team enjoyed an undefeated season at 5-0. Quarterback David Kimball led the freshmen for 553 total yards with a 58% completion average. Running backs Mike Condit, Kevin Meyers, and Lanny Curnes combined for 1900 total yards, with Mike Condit the leading rusher with 572 yards. The defense was led by Lanny Curnes and Rich Alden. Auburn reserves showed inexperience with their season record. Led by Rod Keithly and John Henning as quarterbacks, the reserves compiled a 1-3 season. Bulldog reserves fight for position on bench. 52 Cross Country has five go to state meet For the seventh year in a row, the cross country team qualified for the state meet in which they finished seventh in the standings. The team, consisting of five seniors, a junior, a sophomore, and a freshman, was one of the largest in recent years. Coached by Mr. Dale Bradley and led by seniors Kevin Howat and Mark McKercher, the team defended their title as champions of the Falls City Invitational and Twin Rivers Conference. The girls made an improvement over last years record with five wins. The dual season record was 5-2 but after tournaments and the Syracuse and Peru invitationals, it ended in a 7-8 record. Fourth place was achieved at conference tournament, winning to Blair. Vicki Striggow was named to the second string all conference team with Lorrie Curnes and Joyce Myers honorable mention. 54 • • Reserve 4-3 record underclassmen 7-1 The reserve team had a good year. Their season ended with four wins and three losses. Reserve defeats were Techumseh, Johnson-Brock, Wymore, and Falls City. Freshman volleyball record was 1-7. Wymore was the victory. Freshmen show their excitement after a victory. 55 Seniors lead team throughout season Coach Gary Spear's varsity basketball team this year improved by winning three times as many games as the year before. The season's campaign wound up a 3-17 record. Eight of the 20 games were against teams which were rated in the top 10 in class B sometime during the season. The bulldogs scored an average of 56.7 points a game while giving up an average of 70.5 points to the other teams. The bulldogs were led by seniors Kevin Howat and Tom Shires who averaged 12.3 and 10.4 points a game. There were nine letter winners on this year's team of which three will return. The bulldogs were ahead in the turnover column by turning the ball over 15.5 times per game while causing the opponents to turn it over 18.2 times per game. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: 1. They were led by Randy Simpson and Scott Hannaford who averaged 9.1 and 8.6 points a game respectively. As a team they averaged 47.5 points a game. Harold Groves led the team in rebounding with 89 rebounds on the season. The freshman team this year acquired a record of 6-5 on the season and went on to place second at the Twin-Rivers Conference Tourney in Syracuse. They competed well as a team as they lost 4 games by 7 or less points. The freshman came away with a 3-2 winning record. Chris Delay jumps high for a rebound. 59 Girls varsity led by senior All-Stater Girls varsity basketball under the coaching of Franklin Smith and assistant coach Diane Birdsley completed their season with a 8-9 record. Senior, Lorrie Curnes broke the school record for most points scored in a basketball game with 37 pts. against Nebraska City. Curnes also led the team in scoring and rebounding, with 345 pts. and 183 rebounds. Second in both scoring and rebounding was senior Carol Grant with 80 pts. and 129 rebounds. Four team members qualified for state in February: Charlie Haynes at 126 lbs. finished with a 19-6-2 record; Lon Haynes at 155 lbs. finished with a 28-2 record and Class B championship this year and a 78-14 record in his high school career; Bill Kieler at 167 lbs. was Class B state runner-up and finished with a 25-1 record. Mike Shoff placed 6th at state in the heavyweight division and ended with a 23-7 record. The coaches remarked that it was a very satisfying season and things look bright for next year with only three weight classes graduating. Mike Condit shows his hurdle form during a meet. 66 Senior girls show squads leadership Auburn's girls' varsity track season was highlighted by the third consecutive qualification of senior Lorrie Curnes to the state meet held in North Platte. Curnes along with other senior track members were the leaders of the team. Senior Vicki Striggow placed high in meets but was unable to qualify for the state meet. The season wasn't one of the best Auburn has ever had but it proved to be a learning experience for the go rs and coach. Milton Vandervort led all golfers by being a medal winner at the Tri-County Invitational.
