24 spirit reaches band in the year of ’76 Bulldog members charged with the “Spirit of 76 went to work for the Bulldog Band promoting a carnival, a bake sale, and a record dance. The money earned was set aside for a possible band trip in 1977. The “Spirit of 76” rated a superior at Plattsmouth Invitational Marching Contest and a II in their division at Pershing Marching Contest. At the District Music Contest the “Spirit of76” was just as busy. Those who received a I were full band, stage band, sax choir, clarinet choir, percussion ensemble, V. Bergmann. drums; M. E. Kuenning, sax; D. Oestmann. tenor sax; V. Vollertsen, flute; A. Oestmann, flute; B. Wilson, clarinet. Brass choir received a II. All State Band members were Danny Oestmann, and Vicki Bergmann, Hasting Honor Band members were Danny Oestmann, Vicki Bergmann, Mary Ellen Kuenning, and Gene Browning, alternate. ahs world of art under new director AHS added several new teachers to the staff this year, one of which was Mr. Donnye Bowden. Mr. Bowden who now heads the art department is from Sutherland, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school in 1964. After graduating from Kearney state in 1968, he went on to teach at York for four years. Then he decided to try his hand at business-Silk Screening Business. Now back in teaching, he feels that AHS is one of the finest schools around, and the students are above average. The art department hasn’t made too many changes. The courses consist of: Art I, Pottery and Sculpture, and Drawing and Painting. One change that was well received was the creation of the Artist of the Week”. This was started to arouse a greater interest in art and because Mr. Bowden believes in “showing off” at least one piece of everyone's work. This year’s “Artists of the Week were: S. Palmerton, J. Whisler, D. McVay, M. McConnaughy, C. Chandler, P. Greenrod, B. Powell, L. Helms, D. Hoffart, C. Pacot, J. Vosberg, J. Henry, and L. Morrow, up to March 25, 1976. 1 1. Cindy Kieler makes a coil pot on a handwheel. 2. Dave Hoffart macrames a hanging pot project 3. Alisa Manion develops her skill during Drawing and Painting class. 4. Juanita Whisler busily finishes her hanging pot. 5 Denise Moenning demonstrates a square knot. 6. Steve Palmerton skillfully paints his 4' by 8' mural. 26
