Auburn High School Auburn, Nebraska 3 4 Faculty title IX compliance affects ahs policies The Auburn School District started to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Title IX states that there will be no sex discrimination in any form in any federally-assisted school. This includes all academic courses, athletics, counseling and employment. Mr. Bowden who now heads the art department is from Sutherland, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school in 1964. After graduating from Kearney state in 1968, he went on to teach at York for four years. Then he decided to try his hand at business-Silk Screening Business. Now back in teaching, he feels that AHS is one of the finest schools around, and the students are above average. The art department hasn’t made too many changes. The courses consist of: Art I, Pottery and Sculpture, and Drawing and Painting. One change that was well received was the creation of the Artist of the Week”. This was started to arouse a greater interest in art and because Mr. Bowden believes in “showing off” at least one piece of everyone's work. This year’s “Artists of the Week were: S. Palmerton, J. Whisler, D. McVay, M. McConnaughy, C. Chandler, P. Greenrod, B. Powell, L. Helms, D. Hoffart, C. Pacot, J. Vosberg, J. Henry, and L. Morrow, up to March 25, 1976. 1 1. Now schools are offering them instead. This year we had four vocational trades teachers and numerous courses available. Teachers were Mr. Dale Bradley, Mr. Larry Petersen. Mrs. Norma Loew, and Mrs. Mary Jane Williams. Courses include General Metals, Vocational Building, Mechanical Drawing, Electronics, Machine Woods, Advanced Woods, Vocational Carpentry, Drafting, Home Economics I, Home Economics II, and Home Economics IV. The juniors put forth great effort to make an exciting and delightful evening. The seemingly authentic back ground decorations along with the costumed waiters and waitresses brought about a feeling of Riviera atmosphere. Dave Luhring, junior class president, and Kevin Brettmann, senior class president, gave their satirical speeches directly following the dinner. Entertainment was then provided by Jeff Wilson. Dwight Wininger, Randy Rogge, and Steve Palmerton singing three numbers in their barbershop quartet. Wilson and Wininger also did a short Abbot and Costello routine between two baseball players. During some of the pep rallies they chose faculty members to lead a girls versus boys yell contest as a spirit-raiser. Other rallies were highlighted by noise making, egg throwing contests and a Mr. Cool Contest” in which a wrestler and a basketball player, Russ Pasco and Steve Cole, participated to see who was the coolest” by sitting on buckets of ice as an endurance test. First of the changes was a new head coach. Mr. Steve Senff, aided by Mr. Terry VanGundy, assumed the responsibilities of Mr. Larry Dankenbring. Because only two seniors, Kevin Brown and Kevin Brettmann, reported for the team this year, the cagers had less senior experience than in previous years. At the beginning of the year the frosh were just another class but as the year went on they showed their warmth, spirit, and dedication. Being the largest class of the school they had very little apathy. The frosh joined the basketball and football teams, Pep Club, GAL, FCA, SAB. and many other activities. Sophomore class students: participated on all varsity girls and boys athletic teams; played leading rolls in fall and spring plays; participated at state one-act play and speech contests; won conference wrestling crowns; and even placed a girl on the Twin Rivers All Tournament team. The class showed both class spirit and talent by winning the hall decoration contest held during the celebration of homecoming. Their hall was decorated with many three dimensional objects, such as tree branches and unusual mobiles. Prom proved to be a success for the spirit-filled class. The juniors decided to break the trends by not using the bicentennial theme as used by so many other schools and chose “Night on the Riviera.” To finance the Prom, they worked at the football concessions stand and sold magazine subscriptions. 1.
