The Student Advisory Board, assumed a great deal of responsibility this year. They worked to furnish the book store for next year, purchased vending machines for the student lounge and received permission from the school board to make it possible for the girls to wear slacks. Also they sponsored supervision of the student lounge. They also conducted tours through the new school and organized College Night. For their moneyLmaking projects they had a Saturday day, sold stationery, and sponsored a freshman initiation. Barbara Sullivan, president of the board, represented Auburn by attending the state convention. As a final project the council had a banquet at the Ponderosa and went to the show in Nebraska City. French Club Is Newly Organized The French Club was newly organized this year. They worked steadily in promoting an interest in the literature, history, and culture of the French people. Also they are tyring to further international relations by corresponding regularly with a friend in France and by making efforts to travel to France. As an activity the group went to Nebraska City, attended a movie, and following had pizzas at the home of one of the members. Spanish Club Plans Trip to Mexico Miss Graesser hands Michele Sierks part of her allotment of light bulbs, sold as a money-making project for the trip to Mexico. The AHS Spanish Club, Los Conquista-dores, enjoyed various activities throughout the year. Speakers at regular meetings included Dr. Robert P. Jachmans, director of the Modern Language League; and Mr. Clyde Howell, a teacher at Middle School. Club Activities included seeing Man of LaMancha in Omaha, a Christmas party, and a banquet at the end of the year. Bake sales and other moneymaking projects helped to finance a trip to Mexico in June. Sponsors for the club were Mrs. Hilda Hector (first semester) and Miss Marie Graesser (second semester). 10 Bulldog Staff Strives to Meet Deadline Kathle and Roland discuss new angles for pictures. The annual Staff worked throughout the year toward the publication of the 1971 Bulldog. Kathy Bence, editor, spent many hours arranging the assignments for the staff members. The Alpha Beta Gamma Math and Science Club, composed of 76 members, completed another very successful year. Topics discussed at meetings ranged from demonstrations from the physics class to a film on ecology. Educational tours in Kansas City and Lincoln included such sights as the Truman Library, the State Penal Complex, Goodyear, and the State Capitol. Money-making projects included the food stand at the Nemaha County Fair, candy and bake sales, a soup supper, and a slave auction. All of this helped finance the trip to Washington D.C. 12 Kathy Taylor purchases some candy from Janet Nixon, a Math and Science clerk. Social activities included the annual Christmas caroling, and in January, a sled-riding party was held. The Mother-Daughter Banquet ushered in the installation of new members for the coming year and the awarding of degrees. Mrs. Allen was the guest speaker and her topic was Women't Liberation. Earning FHA degrees were Gloria Obermeyer, Chris Berger, and Peggy Williams. Not pictured Nancy Kennedy. The Future Homemakers of America started off the year with a swimming party, as a way of getting acquainted with prospective members. In September, 19 members attended the District F.H.A. Convention at Bennett. Later in the month a Family Night was held at the Methodist Church, with Rev. Zimmerman as guest speaker. New members were initiated at this time. The main money-making project was the Christmas The officers enjoyed the governor's tea, given for the Heart Fund, bake sale. AHS Band Led By New Director Band officers: Doug Crotty, Vlce-Pres.; Lambert Stiers, Pres.; Dennis Winlnger, Stu. Co.; Debbie Ebler, Sec.; Elaine Walker, Treas. To begin this year's band activities the band marched at the Nemaha County Fair under the direction of the new band director, Mr. Dahmke. They also performed at the Apple-Jack Festival at Nebraska City and at the Richardson County Fair at Humboldt. When the band marched at the Plattsmouth Invitational Marching Contest they earned a one rating and a trophy. They also won the Class A division in the competition at Peru State College Homecoming. Pep Band played for all home football and basketball games. The Soul Steppers performed at the Aksarben Tourney at Millard and performed on T.V. at the State Class B and C Basketball Finals at Lincoln. The band also had a Mid-Winter and Spring Concert. At District Music Contest the Brass Quartet and Flute Duet received a superior rating and the concert band received an excellent rating. Janet Genoa lead the band as drum majorette. Kurt Kent received the Most Outstanding Football Player Award. John Whisler won the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. The Most Valuable Player Award for Golf is shown by Dru Lammle. Both Dru and his brother Dave earned the trophy ending the season with the same number of points. 26 Convo Honors Outstanding Students The annual Honors Convocation concluded the senior's last day of school. Gold A Pins were awarded to seniors Kathie Bence, Denise Elliott, Joe Ely, Frances Kite, Kirk Kuwitzky, Janet Nixon, Pat Patras, Becky Pasco, and Kathleen Rogge. Jim Vosberg, Scott McKercher, and David Wininger, were given recognition for placing in the top one percent of the National Math Conest. Jim ranked 19th of all entrants. Miss Steimle presented Janet Genoa and Debbie Ebeler superior awards for accompanying. John Chatelain and Lynn Blecha received awards for superiors on piano and vocal solos at contest. A Notes also received superiors. Mr. Dahmke presented Lambert Stiers with the Outstanding Senior Band Member Award. Speech contest entrants Gloria Obermeyer, Doug Holsclaw, David Holsclaw, Kathie Bence, Joe Ely, and Jim Taylor received certificates from Mr. Falter for superior ratings. Senior Pep Club members received gold charms. High point winners from each class were given gold chevrons. They were Fresh: Mary Lee Glen, Ann Ely, Anne Oestman, Kris Jensen, and Candi Apple; Soph: Kathy Heskett, Valerie Coatney, Peggy Williams, and Patty Harpham; Jr: Emily Higgins, Mary Volkman, Denise Gardner; Sr: Debbie Harris, Mariellen Wilson, Rhonda Shoemake, and Kay Cowan. Nancy Heskett had Senior and All-School top points. Mrs. Reeves presented Cynthia Redfern and Emily Higgins awards for bookkeeping, putting them on the Bookkeeping Roll of Honor. Shorthand I awards for theory were given to Lana Coulter, Susan Biere, Michelle Sierks, Arnelda Harms, and Donna Kurrelmeyer. Mrs. Loew named Becky Shoemake as winner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow-Award. Girls Track was introduced this year, and eight girls received letters from Miss Kern. They were Ginny Aufenkamp, Jane Clark, Barb Brady, Kathy Heskett, Patty Harpham, Sherry Striggow, and Ann Shires. The coaches awarded letters for their respective sports. Dennis Rippe received the Free Throw Plaque for basketball, John Whisler was named as the Most Outstanding Wrestler, Kurt Kent received the Outstanding Senior Football Player Award, and Dave and Dru Lammle tied for Outstanding Golfer Award. Dennis Brady was named recipient of the Dave Swinney Memorial Trophy. Mr. gerdes accepts an appreciation award from the Class of 71. Albert protests to lending his girl. The judge performs a quickie ceremony. Comedy Is Accent For Fall Play Comedy was the accent for the fall play with the presentation of Norman Krasna's play, Dear Ruth . The plot concerns a young girl (Becky Pasco) who carries on a romantic correspondence with an overseas soldier (Kirk Kuiwitzky) in her elder sister's name. When the youth returns, he makes up to the older sister (Gloria Obermeyer) who is already engaged. The cast members were David Hols-claw. Kathie Bence, Doug Holsclaw, Roland Barrett, Elaine Walker. Ann Vaughan, and Kevin Casey. The play was directed by Jeff Falter with technical direction by Sharon Parrish. Stage manager was Mari-ellen Wilson. 28 Twelve Angry Jurors Is Spring Play The drama Twelve Angry Jurors by Reginald Rose was the A.H.S. spring play. The story focused on the problem of reaching a verdict in a murder trial. Crux of the decision the jury must make is contained in the phrase, beyond a reasonable doubt . Their final verdict and how they reach it add up to a mature piece of dramatic literature. The cast included Kirk Kuwitzky, John Ely, Gloria Obermeyer, Kathie Bence, Joe Ely, Pat Patras. Colleen Harris. Dennis Rippe. Valerie Coatney, Connie Pokrant, Anne Ely, Doug Holsclaw. David Adams, Tracy Kuwitzky, and David Holsclaw. The play was directed by Jeff Falter and the technical direction was by Sharon Parrish. Stage manager was Mariellen Wilson. 'Til kill him! I'll kill him! During a convocation three seniors and two juniors were tapped into the National Honor Society by last year’s members. The students were selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Only five per cent of the junior class and seven per cent of the senior class are eligible each year. Entertainment was provided by the Speech and Music departments. The Stage Band opened with the processional with a change in the tempo of music. Entertainment for the court was presented by Janet Genoa and John Chatelain who played the piano. Gloria Obermeyer gave an interpretation of poetry. John Chatelain and Jody Erisman presented a comic ballet routine. Lynn Blecha sang a vocal solo. A bonfire early in the week added to school spirit as Mr. Neil Thomas, Auburn's long-time announcer, gave an inspiring speech rousing both fans and team with words of encouragement and laughter. Game night was cold, but even cold weather could not spoil the pride of the Auburnites as they watched their team battle the Vikings of Waverly. defeating them 9-6. Homecoming festivities started during the day with a parade downtown. Halftime was filled with cheers and tears as the shivering royalty was escorted to the field for the presentation of the Queen. Coach Lew Shoff's third year as Bulldog football mentor proved to be his best as his gridders racked up 9 wins without a loss. Nearly every game, the Bulldogs were outweighed but stood up well against their opponents. The experienced Bulldogs racked up 198 points to the opposition’s 46. The Auburnites received 7th and 9th place rankings from the Lincoln Journal and Star and from Omaha World Herald respectively. He also led the team in scoring with 13 touchdowns and in kickoff returns with a 35-yard average. Receiving Honorable Mention All-State climaxed the year for Mac . to All-State Team Kurt Kent led the stingy Bulldog defense throughout the course of the season. Cross-Country team stepped forward this year to receive the championship of one of their quadrangular meets. Their opponents were Humboldt, Johnson-Brock, and Tecumseh. AHS Grapplers Rank 8th in State The Auburn High Varsity wrestlers had another outstanding season, posting a 7-1 dual record. Coached by Leo Diet-rich and Assistant Coach Shoff, the matmen won these honors: Twin Rivers Champs, Auburn Invitational Winners, 2nd in District, and 3rd in Aksarben. The impressive-looking Bulldogs wound up the season ranked 8th in State. Rod Groff, Twin Rivers Champ, adds five more points to his team's score. 48 John Whisler and Head Coach Dietrich review victories won by John in the State Wrestling Tourney in Lincoln. John defeated four grapplers in gaining his State title in the 138-pound division. John’s dual record was 24-1; losing only to Heine of Centennial. E. Tourney The Junior Varsity posted an impressive record this year with wins over Falls City, Plattsmouth, Syracuse, Crete, Hickman Norris, Wymore, and Fairbury. Their only loss, at the hands of Falls City was avenged later in the year. Winning the Southeast Invitational Tourney was the highlight of the year. Bulldogs Capture Ak-Sar-Ben Title The Auburn Bulldog Basketball Team had its ups and downs in a season which marked the first losing campaign for head coach Larry Dankenbring during his five year varsity coaching career. The Dogs did come up with some important wins, and they managed to beat every team in the Southern Division of the Ak-Sar-Ben Conference. This enabled them to wrap up the Conference Crown. All-Conference Bulldogs were junior Greg Hahn and seniors Dave Lammle and Joe Moody. Moody and Lammle also captained the Bulldogs throughout the season. Girls’ Track Is New Addition to AHS Sports Nancy Heskett qualified for State In 100 and 220-yard dashes. This year a new sport was added to the AHS sports roster—Girls' Track, The girls participated in a dual meet with Johnson-Brock and attended the District Meet held in Crete. At Districts, three metals were won by Auburn: Kathy Heskett won 5th place in the 50-yard low hurdles, Nancy Heskett received two medals for 5th in the 100-yard dash and 3rd in the 220-yard dash. A State qualifier, Nancy attended the first State Girls' Track Meet held in Grand Island and won 4th in the 220-yard dash event. Golf Team Wins Class B State Championship The 1971 Golf team had the distinction of bringing home Auburn High School's first State Championship. The team placed second in the Tri-County Invitational Tournament at Beatrice and second in the Twin Rivers Conference Tournament at Falls City. They won the Ak-Sar-Ben Conference Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The team placed second in the District Tournament which was held at Holmes Park in Lincoln, but they went on to win the State Tournament and the Class B Championship. AHS Trackmen Have Successful Season Sprintmen Bill Norvell and Tim Collin tie the forty-year-old 100 Yard Mark at 10.4. Auburn Thinclads won all of their duals and triangu-lars with the exception of a dual with Plattsmouth. The Bulldogs had trouble placing high in the big meets, but managed placing second in the Nebraska City Relays and Fourth in the Aksarben Conference. Head Coach Stoner and Assistant coaches Zinn and Shoff were disappointed with the big track events but recognize the team in their fine efforts in dual competition. Four competitors from AHS qualified for the State Track Meet. Steve Garver qualified in the 120 high hurdles event. Steve was also high-point man on the squad. Robbin Simmons, who set an AHS pole vault record of 13 feet, was also a State qualifier. Scott McKercher received his ticket for the track meet in the mile run. Darrel Wininger triple-jumped 38 feet 4 inches in making state. His jump set a school record for this new event. Other school marks were a tie of the 100-yard sprint record at 10.4 by Tim Collin and Bill Norvell. The 2-mile relay team of Dennis Thomas, Brad Holding, Pat Tynon, and Dave Adams broke the record at 8:31.9. 57 Robbin Simmons, school vault record holder at 13 , Is up and over. Its duties include hiring the faculty and administration, and drawing up the annual budget. This year the School Board also spent much of their time in adding the finishing touches needed for the new high school. They were received at the Court House, given name tags, and were then moved into the courtroom where they were sworn in. After these activities they were then separated into their individual offices and briefed for a few minutes. The candidates were given a free dinner at Arbor Manor. They resumed their meetings at the Court House immediately following dinner and went into a more in-depth study of their offices. Class of 71 Graduates in New School The class of 1971 was the first class to graduate from the new high school. Kirk Kuwitzky and Kathie Bence spoke for the ninety' graduates. Their addresses were entitled Desire to Change -- A Human Necessity and Facing the New Dawn of Optimism . Supt. Albert Austin presented awards and honors as follows: Nebraska Wesleyan educational grant, valued at $500, to Kathie Bence. Northwest Missouri State, worth $75 per semester for four years, to Pat Patras. Pat also was awarded the Auburn Education Assn, scholarship of $100. NROTC at the University of Minnesota, scholarship of expenses plus $50 per month to John Clark. University of Nebraska regents one-year scholarship of freshman tuition to Joe Ely. Alternates are David Holsclaw, Frances Kite, and Kirk Kuwitzky. Dennis Brady was awarded the Vdrgil L. Lehr Memorial Scholarship of $400, plus a Peru Achievement Foundation award of $100. The Irvin Memorial Scholarship of $100 from the Auburn Clinic went to Lambert Stiers. National Merit scholarship letters of commendation went to Joe Ely and Dwight Rogers. Joe also received the Bausch and Lomb honorary sciences award. A St. Mary honor tuition scholarship of $800 was awarded to Denise Elliott. John Wolcott received a University of Nebraska honors or advanced placement standing certificate in chemistry. Peru State College scholarships of half tuition for four years were awarded to Janice Henning, Allison Cole, and Jim Taylor. Miss Henning and Taylor also received Peru VFW awards of $100 each. Kirk Kuwitzky received the Math and Science Club scholarship of $150, and notice of his appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. National Honor Society members were introduced: Kathie Bence, Joe Ely, Kirk Kuwitzky, Pat Patras, John Clark, Mariellen Wilson, Dennis Brady, and Janet Nixon. Darryl Wheeldon received a Peru State College special ability grant in art, valued at $175. AHS honor awards for the top ten percent of the class went to Kathie Bence, Denise Elliott, Joe Ely, Pat Engles, Frances Kite, Kirk Kuwitzky, Pat Patras, Kathleen Rogge, and Jodi Siegner. Principal Marvin Gerdes presented the class for graduation. Dick Hahn, Jr., president of the Board of Education, awarded the diplomas.
