Many Activities Led By Student Council The Student Council had an active role in many school functions with Mr. Curnes as sponsor. Besides offering a variety of interesting convocations, the Council sponsored a Freshman Intiation Dance and sold Auburn sweaters to promote school spirit. Helpful volunteers demonstrate to fellow students the fun of being a tourist on a vacation in Switzerland. The Council sponsored a Teachers Appreciation Week; the theme being ’’Daisies don't tell how much we appreciate our teachers. During the week gifts and useful items were given to the teachers. On the last day 44 students accepted teachers' responsibilities. Bright paper daisies made them easily recognizable as Student Teachers. 18 the sum of the angles of a triangle = 180 degrees. National Honor Society Acquires Members Seniors Bill Taylor, Lavon Bohling, Carol Scott, Cheryl Groff, and Ted Sheely, members of National Honor Society tapped new members to begin the solemn initiation ceremony. 20 Editor Lavon Bohling checks the work of staff members Betty Hahn and Peggy Meyers who are trying to maintain the quality of book that won first place last year in the Journalism Division of the Ak-Sar-Ben Conf. Mr. Fell Expands Interests Of Art Club Under the sponsorship of Mr. Paul Fell, the Art Club continually displayed talent throughout the year. Club activities included a paint-in and a community service project of painting a downtown fence to encourage planting of trees. The club also enjoyed touring the Nebraska Wesleyan University Art Gallery and Sheldon Art Gallery in Lincoln and Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. Officers were Denetta Henne, Pres. ; Nancy Carr, Vice-Pres. ; Nancy Clark, Sec. ; Merle Kuhlman, Treas. ; and Anne Nincehelser, SAB. Irene Bergmann placed third in the National Maritime One of 100 finalists, Alice Keedy won a Gold Key Industry Poster Contest. Award in the Scholastic Art Contest. 22 Spanish Club Experiences Active Year The AHS Spanish Club, Los Conquistadores, conducted monthly meetings in Spanish. Speakers at regular meetings included Mr. Sebold, the foreign language consultant for the state of Nebraska; Mr. Howell, a teacher at the Junior High School who spoke on Costa Rica; and Hugo Vallegas, a student from Peru, South America. For one program, students presented original skits. The club went to Lincoln to see a Mexican craft exhibit and eat in a Mexican cafe. They also had their annual Christmas party and a banquet at the end of the year. Officers for the year were: La von Bohling, Pres. ; Jean Blecha, V. Washington, D.C. — The Alpha Beta Gamma Science and Math Club composed of 76 members, promoted interest in the fields of math and science. Such topics as psychology, nuclear plants, and embalming were covered at regular meetings. Club activities included educational tours of Truman Library, Ford Motor Company, Creighton University, Joslyn Art Museum, and E Day at the University of Nebraska. The major money-making project of the year was the club-sponsored food stand at the Nemaha County Fair. Other projects--candy and bake sales, soup supper, and a slave auction helped finance the educational trip to Washington in June. Ronald Hedkett and Lynn Rogge qualified for the club scholarships. Book Fair Hosted By Library Club Under the sponsorship of the new librarian Mrs. Nixon the Library Club witnessed an active year. Club members enjoyed a picnic at the beginning of the year. The officers and Mrs. Nixon attended the State Student Librarians Convention at Papillion in October. The Library Club hosted a book fair in November. Books were on display in the hall. Approximately 150 books were sold. A field trip in March found the club touring the Mission Junior High School Library in Bellevue. Future Homemakers Of America Heighten Interest With Varied Programs Members of the Future Homemakers of America began the year with a progressive dinner. Initiation ceremonies for incoming freshmen were held in October. Twelve members attended the District FHA Convention at Weeping Water. Regular meetings throughout the year included a session on cake decorating, an informative talk from a foreign student, and the annual Christmas caroling trek. The money-making project of the year was a spaghetti supper. Highlights of FHA Week were clash day, munch-and-crunch day, be-kind-to-boys day, dress-up day, and a dinner for the teachers. The final event of the year was the Mother-Daughter Banquet which included installation of new officers and a style show, compliments of the freshman home economics students. Laurie Vosberg, Student Council Liz McGough, Reporter Kathy Mowery, Historian Denise Elliott, and Parliamentarian Ernestine Schlange. L 27 Homecoming Royalty: Rhonda Collin, Karen Crofford, Queen Cheryl Groff, Anita Zeps, Jean Blecha Harvest Moon Brightens ’68 Homecoming Homecoming 1968 began with the traditional bonfire on Thursday, October 17. Dr. Paul Scott helped promote spirit with a short pep talk. Festivities continued with a parade downtown after school on Friday. Robert Hem -mingsen, president of the Board of Education urged Bulldog fans to push for a victory in the evening battle with Waverly. The football game resulted in a Bulldog victory. The Homecoming crowd then enjoyed dancing under the Harvest Moon to music provided by the Jolly Green Giants. The crowning of Queen Cheryl Groff to reign over Homecoming festivities was the highlight of the evening. Crowned by Pep Club President Carol Scott, Queen Cheryl was presented with a rose bouquet by A-Club Vice-President Charles Behrends. Attendants to the Queen were Jean Blecha, Rhonda Collin, Karen Crofford, and Anita Zeps. Mike Adams, John Femeau, Mark Hahn, John Schuberth and Joe Whisler escorted the 1968 Homecoming court. 28 Cheryl Groff anxiously awaits coronation. Cheerleaders Promote Enthusiasm Reserve LEFT TO RIGHT: Margaret McGough, Rhonda Rohrs (head), Kathy Edwards, Lynn Blecha, Jackie Shew, Allison Cole. 31 Pep Club Supports Bulldogs With Spirit Striving to promote school spirit, Auburn High's largest organization began yearly activities with renewed enthusiasm. Decorating for Homecoming was the main project. Officers were: Carol Scott, Pres. ; Donna Moody, Vice-Pres. ; Beth Applegate, Sec. ; Mariellen Wilson, Treas. ; and Anita Zeps, SAB. Squad leaders included: Nancy Damme, Mar)' Andrew, Juanita Hill, Debbie Gaines, Ann Grafton, Connie Fritsch, Rita Seid. Barbara Sullivan, Janet Nixon, Ginger Swinney, Peggy Niebmgge, Rhonda Heriford, Susan Biere. and Jody Erisman. New uniforms were designed by the club members. School buses transported the members to all away games and most girls supported the Bulldogs by attending. Each girl also worked on various committees in order to earn the necessary points for a chevron. Janet Nixon, sophomore, was awarded a gold chevron for earning the highest number of points in the Pep Club. 32 Cheerleaders make worthwhile trip through auditorium during the half-time in order to collect for the March of Dimes. Rita Seid uses her time and talent in preparation for homecoming. The Auburn High School Band, directed by Gary Tolen, was active in many community and school affairs. The band presented two concerts during the year with the spring concert in the city park. In the District Music Contest the band received an excellent rating. Those individuals earning superior ratings were: Rebecca Kite-tympani, Irene Bergmann-flute, and Roger Harms-t rum pet. Violinist Dave Chatelain was chosen to take part in the All State Orchestra. 35 Rebecca Kite participated in the Hastings Honor Band and the All State Orchestra. Harms were selected from state wide auditions to be in the Hastings Honor Choir held in February. 37 The Antrobus family and several refugees gather around the fire to ward off the cold. Antrobus Family Survived Calamities By The Skin Of Their Teeth Henry and Gladys tell Mama” about their day at school. The Skin of Our Teeth, a satirical comedy by Thorton Wilder, was presented by Auburn High School on November 4, 1968. The play, under the direction of Jeffrey Falter, centered around George Antrobus--the average American at grips with destiny. The Antrobus family survived a thousand calamities by the skin of their teeth. The one-act comedy Antic Spring also doubled as the school's speech contest play this year. Cast members were: Colleen Harris, Jim Ely, Rhonda Collin, Mark Hahn, Kathy Bence, and Ted Sheely. Night Of One-Act Plays Second play on the program was The Lottery a drama by Shirley Jackson. Among the cast of over twenty members were: David Chatelain, Carol Scott, John Ely, David Holsclaw, Nancy Damme, Lambert Stiers, Karen Crofford, Joel Bohling, Lorraine Gerdes, and Dave Fisher. For her interpretation of poetry, Rena Meritt reads Nightmare at Noon by Stephen Vincent Benet. Patsy Stephens' expression for her oral interpretation of prose is a key factor in earning a superior rating. Five Speech Contestants Earn Superiors Carol Scott, Dave Chatelain, and Nancy Damme work on Arsenic and Old Lace for their oral interpretation of drama 40 Prince Mike Adams, King Mark Hahn, Queen Cheryl Groff, Princess Jean Blecha. Royalty Presented At 1969 May Fete The speech and music departments provided the entertainment for the May Fete festivities. The court and program were introduced by master of ceremonies Jeffrey Falter. The dance band played several selections and members of Chorale sang madrigal numbers. Many weeks of hard work were climaxed by the 1969 Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom given by the Juniors to honor the Seniors. Moonlight and Roses served as the theme. The banquet was held in the Auburn Hotel banquet room on Saturday, April 26. Glenn Clements, president of the junior class, was master of ceremonies. The banquet was preceded by an invocation given by Mr. Dick Hahn. Glenn welcomed the seniors and Mark Hahn, senior class president gave a response. Norman Moyer delighted the audience with some original poems and Miss Rudolph, Mr. Tolen, and Mr. Falter played two songs on their recorders Dave Chatelain entertained the guests with a violin solo. The main speaker for the evening was Mr. Russ, who spoke about the absence of a Generation Gap . A quartet composed of Dave Fisher, Glenn Clements, John Crotty, and Roger Harms ended the program with two vocal selections. Glenn concluded the ceremonies and the group moved to the high school auditorium where the prom was held. The banquet was served by members of the sophomore class, who were elected by the junior class. The romantic theme was carried out in blue and pink table decorations. The auditorium featured rose gardens and a fountain. Coach Lew Shoff presents the Kiwanis award to Mark Hahn as the outstanding senior football player. High scoring player for the year was Rex Beatty with 414 points. He also broke his own school record for rebounds with 334. helping to establish the new team rebound record of 988 for the season. In tournament play Auburn took third place in the Twin Rivers Conference Holiday Basketball Tournament by defeating Nebraska City in the consolation game; and the Bulldogs relinquished their domination of the Ak-Sar-Ben Conference Tournament by bowing to a determined Millard team 63-62 in the tourney finals. In the district tournament Auburn rolled up two easy wins over Tri-County and Geneva before bowing to Crete, the eventual State Class B Champion Rex Beatty and Guy Lammle were named to allconference berths in both Twin Rivers and Ak-Sar-Ben Conferences for their outstanding play. Commencement Exercises — Seniors’ Final Activities Rev. Amot gave the prayer and scripture and Rev. Zimmerman delivered the meditation to the graduating seniors at the Baccalaureate exercises Sunday night, May 25, 1969. Class president Mark Hahn gave the invocation at Commencement, May 27, 1969. Lavon Bohling and Ron Heskett gave addresses to their fellow seniors, assembled families, and friends, and Dick Hahn, president of the Board of Education, presented the diplomas to the seniors. The exercises were concluded by the benediction given by Cheryl Groff. Both Rhonda Collin and Mike Adams received the Irvin scholarship grants. The Auburn Chamber of Commerce scholarship was awarded to Betty Hahn. John Schuberth was awarded a Lehigh University Educational Grant and Adrienne Berger received the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Scholarship to Midland College. Those receiving Peru State College scholarships for half tuition for four years were Ron Allgood, Debbie Bohling, Alice Keedy, Carol Muse, Mary Ann Overman, and Karen Schneider. Ron Heskett and Lynn Rogge received Alpha Beta Gamma Math and Science scholarships. Cheryl Groff was awarded the Auburn Kiwanis scholarship and Juanita Hill received the Auburn Education Association scholarship. Special awards were given to many seniors. Honor graduates who were in the upper ten per cent of the class scholastically were Lavon Bohling, Pat Berg-mann, Cheryl Groff, Ron Heskett, Juanita Hill, Lynn Rogge, Peggy Meyers, Ted Sheely, and Bill Taylor. Mark Oestmann won the Bausch and Lomb honorary' science award. The National Math Contest honor awards were presented to Mark Oestmann, Lavon Bohling, and Ron Heskett. Ted Sheely and Bill Taylor were the University of Nebraska regents alternate winners. Mark Oestmann is awarded a grant to Tarkio College.
