AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL Auburn, Nebraska Table of Contents Education is the pathway to success. From this path others ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY 3 lead to various occupations and pastimes. The course of the 1967-1968 school year has been one of STUDENTS 11 change for the Auburn High student. The consolidation of Auburn and Peru schools put many new faces in the halls and six new trailer labs behind the school. New faculty mem- ACTIVITIES 45 bers and traditions were also added. This book is one step on the pathway to memory for those ATHLETICS 79 who have trod the way and wish to turn and see where they have been. CLOSING 94 Robert Hemmingsen, Pres.; Dean Niemann, Dr. B. F. Mowery, Dick Hahn, Jr.. Vice-Pres.; Howard Kite. Dr. Paul Scott, Albert C. Austin, Superintendent of schools. Administration Meets Challenges Ex-officio members, A1 Brady and Ross Adams, are pictured with Mr. Hemmingsen. Mr. Hemmingsen and Mr. Austin discuss plans for the proposed school building. The Board of Education is the governing body of the school district. Its duties include hiring the faculty and administration and drawing up the annual budget. The closing of the Peru Campus School brought about the consolidation of the Auburn and Peru districts. As a result of this consolidation additional classrooms in the form of trailer labs were made available. A1 Brady and Ross Adams, former members of the Peru board were pronounced ex-officio members of the board and helped with the overall planning. A School Bond Election was held and the bond issue was passed on the first ballot by a 72% majority of the voters. As a result a new high school will be constructed and there will be an addition to the Calvert Grade School. The new school is to be completed by September 1969. 4 Marvin Gerdes. Principal The policies of the Board of Education are administered by Mr. Austin and Mr. Gerdes with the help of their secretaries, Mrs. Damme and Mrs. Keunning. The aim of the lettermen’s club of the 1967-68 school year was to actively strengthen the organization. In the fall “A” club members sold many booster club memberships. The booster club is affiliated with the lettermen’s club. They take films of football games for the pleasure of their members and for the benefit of the coaches and players. During the football season the “A” club sold stadium cushions. In the spring the right of freshman, sophomore, and junior lettermen to vote for cheerleaders was re-established. This was considered a major accomplishment, for the boys felt they should be able to help choose the girls who will lead cheers for them. The organization voted to purchase additional blazers to accomodate the influx in membership and to buy a trophy for Coach Rood in remembrance of the goals and standards he helped them set. 57 BACK ROW: C. Bulldogs Return to State Tourney Coach Larry Dankenbring’s cagers set a new school record for wins in a season as they managed eighteen victories and only four defeats. The team also made a second appearance at the state tournament in as many years. They won the Ak-Sar-Ben Tourney for the second year in a row. A major disappointment came from two defeats at the hands of a fine Tecumseh team. Overshadowing the losses to Tecumseh was a tremendous team effort in defeating Crete High convincingly in the District finals at Wesleyan's gymnasium by a score of 60 to 43. Early in the season the Bulldogs had bowed to Crete. Preceding the final game in district play Crete boasted a twenty-one win, no loss record. but the tough Auburn defense stymied them. In the first game of the state tourney Auburn lost to Seward. A combination of almost unbelievable outside shooting accuracy by Seward, and a cold-shooting second quarter for Auburn resulted in a 81-69 triumph for Seward. The 81 points was the most scored by any team against Auburn, and well over the fine 54 point defensive average. Auburn won the southern Ak-Sar-Ben Conference title for the second successive year. The team finished second to Crete in the Twin Rivers Conference. That title was decided by the early season loss to Crete. At the conclusion of the season the Bulldogs were rewarded for their efforts as the Omaha World-Herald rated the team eighth in class B.
