The annual Get Acquainted Dance was sponsored by the club at the beginning of the school year. CO UNTT GO VERNMENT DA Y During March the members of the Junior American History Classes took part in a vigorous campaign for County Government offices. They held caucuses, and nominated candidates for nine county offices. Then an all-school election was held. Juniors who participated were: Rich Bacon, Clerk of District Court; Nancy Guilliatt, Clerk; Linda Johnson, Commissioner; Whlie Gerdes, Assessor; Dick Moody, Judge; Bob Wilson, Attorney; Mike Speece, Superintendent of Schools. Those not pictured are: Charles Bantz, Treasurer; Jim Guilliatt, Sheriff. The activity was sponsored by Mr. Ted Russ. 40

The department presented two all-school plays. The Last Leaf, and Almanac of Liberty. The speech department competed in the annual District Speech Contest held at Peru State College on March 24, 1964 and the annual University of Nebraska Fine Arts Festival held at Lincoln on April 17 and 18. For the last four consecutive years the Auburn High School won the Class A District Speech contest. Receiving superior ratings were the following: Dick Moody, Nancy Biere, Anne McGough, Joel Hermann, and Dennis Schneider, Julie Bass, Jack Sheely, Tom Femeau, Bert Engles, and John Allen. The one-act play, The Boy Upstairs, received a superior. Nancy Biere and Jack Layson received outstanding acting awards. In the University of Nebraska Fine Arts Festival at Lincoln, in which some 1, 600 students from 160 high schools took part, Auburn ranked fifth in Class A. Students winning superior ratings were: Sally Leonard, Judy Seid, and Darrell Kuenning. In the one-act division of the contest, the Auburn play, The Boy Upstairs was awared a superior rating, with superior acting awards going to Nancy Biere and Jack Layson. The speech activities for the year were under the direction of Mrs. Gilbert Wilson. 39
