THE BULLDOG 1964 AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL AUBURN, NEBRASKA STANDING: Ron Hermann; Gene Ely, President. SEATED: Paul Scott; Howard Kite; Dick Hahn, Vice-President; Robert Hemmingsen. BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education is the publicly elected body which governs the schools of our district. The six members meet on the first Monday of each month in the Superintendent's office at the high school. Their principal duties are the hiring of the superintendent of schools, the approving of the school calendar, and the planning of the school budget, their biggest problem. They have been members of the Nebraska State School Boards Association for two years and for two years have been members of the National School Boards Association. The two ex office members are George Dick Wilson, Treasurer; and Ross L. Speece, Secretary. Auburn High School and the whole community owe a debt of gratitude to the Board of Education for the fine work and unselfish hours they have given to make our school a better one. 2 o ft g co ROSS L. This active Alpha Beta Gamma chapter, besides hearing many speakers at club meetings, made several field trips, which included Engineer's Day at the University of Nebraska, Creighton University, S.A.C. Offut, and a trip to Chicago, Illinois and Detroit, Michigan, which was the highlight of the year. Their chief money raising project for this trip was a food stand at the county fair. 28 STUDENT TEA CHER DA Y Student Teacher Day was planned to give interested students an idea of what the teaching field is like. Each teacher chose a student to take over his duties for the entire day. The student was expected to prepare and present the lesson by himself. Besides giving students the opportunity of viewing the class from a teacher's standpoint, the teacher was able to sit in the classroom and experience how the student feels towards the teacher's presentation of the lesson. The student teachers for the year were: Alice Bohling, Jackie Joy, Floyd Pohlman, Cathy Pohlman, Diana Oestman, Gary Obermeyer, Ron Majors, Sharon Connor, Vickie Den, Nancy Biere, Steve Bohling, Arnold Teten, Barbara Gerdes, Mary Frenzel, Judy Seid, Pat Behrends, Jim Wheeler, Jack Sheeley, Sharon Suhr, Larry McLain, Eston Clarke. 29 “THE LAST LEAF” This year's fall play was a three-act comedy entitled The Last Leaf . The characters as standing for curtain call were portrayed by Lee Gerdes, Mary Crofford, Nancy Biere, Jack Layson, Kirk Blecha, Larry McLain, Jeannie Hawley, Judy Seid, Kathy Grant, Eston Clarke, and Dennis Schneider. The central character of this play is the unconventional Lavinia Breckinridge age 77, who is the social leader of a small Southern town. Her disorganized household includes a namby-pamby son, Erskine, his Southern belle of a wife, Lilia, and an orphaned granddaughter, Clara. The plot revolves around Lavinia's inspiration to have her funeral while her fast-diminishing group of friends are still around to enjoy it. Various strategies of Erskines are used to dissuade his mother and are climaxed by his calling in a psychiatrist to examine her. Lavinia calmly tells her astounded maid, Senella, about her plans for the funeral. Mrs. Gilbert E. Wilson directed this excellent play with Mrs. William Ra-rick assisting. 30 “ALMANAC OF LIBERTT” This suspense-filled drama was a commentary on the freedoms enjoyed by Americans. The large cast included: Dick Moody, Dennis Tushla, Dennis Schneider, Deloit Childers, Ted Henderson, Linda Byrom, Jeanie Hawley, Jack Layson, Nancy Biere, Mary Crofford, Gary Rogge, Marilyn Sanders, LeRoy Bergmann, Mike Dahlke, Roberta Fisher, Cathy Pohlman, Anne McGough, Ken Carnes, Carla Walkinshaw, Eston Clarke, Judy Seid, Dich Layson, Darrell Hopper, Sharen Suhr, Larry McLain, Joel Hermann, Janet Elliot, Linda Klinger, Beth Henderson, Julie Bass, Karen Knipe, and Kathy Grant. The plot centers around the assault of a stranger in Ridgeville, a subsequent hearing in city hall where normally responsible community leaders attempted to hide the truth by covering up the incident. At the moment justice appeared to be discarded for personal comfort, time stopped and the community was suspended until understanding and reason prevailed. Violent storm effects which added much to the atmosphere of the play were produced by an excellent stage crew. During curtain call the cast presented director Mrs. Mary Wilson, who was assisted by Mrs. Frances Ra-rick, with a token of their appreciation for a successful play. 31 The Auburn High School students and faculty were entertained with numerous convocations. Lloyd Robbins, minister of the First Christian Church of Washington, Kansas, gave a magic program, a trio of singers presented a choreography of popular songs, the Falls City and Marysville touring choirs gave concerts and Chief Irv Morgan demonstrated judo using students. The last convocation was the election of varsity cheerleaders. The speech classes as their final exam presented the assembly with two humorous plays, One Hundred Dollars , and Desperate Desmand's Dastardly Deed or Wedded, But No Wife. 32 'January, February, March! ! !
