A h CONFERENCE STARS Lon Allen Back Mike Coulter Back Larry King Back Paul Beatty and Larry King ram Ralston! Don Wheeler, Clarence Hoover, and Darrell Minner on the defensive. For the third straight year Auburn dominated South-East Border play by winning the handsome trophy and placing seven men on the All-Conference team. Coach Don Kampe'sgriddersbegan with an exciting 14-12 win over Wymore. Next our northern neighbors in Nebraska City charged the Bulldogs with a 46-13 loss; as did Crete 14-0, and Falls City 45-14. The fighting team then finished with six straight wins: Ralston 33-6; Pawnee City 13-0; Humboldt 58-0; Syracuse 14-7; Tecumseh 33-7; and Plattsmouth 42-6. The Bulldogs completed the ’60-’61 season with an even record, 9-9. The club, coached by Ted Russ, picked up steam near the end of the year to win five straight games. The eleven players awarded letters were co-captains Lon Allen and Stuart Williams, Wendell Stewart, Gary McConnell, Larry King, Marv Hopper, Jack McCord, Clarence Hug, Rich Schneider. Willis Weisbrook, and Ron King. Winning places on the Southeast Border team were Lon Allen, Marv Hopper, and Jack McCord; the Southeast Conference team, Lon Allen and Marv Hopper. An honorable mention on the State Class B team was given Marv Hopper. With a percentage of 79.98, Lon Allen was awarded the free-throw trophy for the second year by the Auburn Rotary Club. A squad of forty-three boys, including eighteen lettermen worked together to win the Southeast Border trophy for A.H.S. this year. They also placed third in the Southeast Conference. In the state track meet in Lincoln, Larry King ran a speedy 15.2 second high hurdle race to place fifth. The mile relay team. Darrel Andrew, Don Wheeler, Steve Kiechel and Rich Schneider, broke the school record in the same meet with a time of 3:37.8. The two-mile relay team which also participated in state competition was composed of Mike Guilliatt, Dean Coulter, Lon Allen, and Jeff Broady. The University of Nebraska honored five Auburn tracksters with Henry F. Shulte full blue awards. They were received by Jeff Broady, Steve Kiechel, Jack McCord, Marvin Hopper, and Larry King. Lon Allen was given a half blue award. Tri-captains of the track team were seniors Mike Coulter, Ed Johnson, and Lon Allen. Jeff Broady in a close finish in Falls City. The Student Advisory Board of the 1960-61 school year was composed of fourteen members elected from the various clubs, organizations, and classes. After joining the National Association of Student Councils and the Nebraska Association, five members represented the school at the state convention in Columbus. Those attending were Allan Harms, Bill Cummings, Karen Ely, Mary Lavigne, and Rhea Reid. Christmas activities were sponsored by the S.AJ3. this year. Food was collected from the three classes and distributed to twenty-one families in the county by the Welfare Office. Carolling in the halls and a special Christmas convocation and dance were enjoyed by every member of tire student body and faculty. In co-ordination with the American Legion Post the S. A. B. has worked to organize “The Dog House, a recreational center for high-school age young people. Display of food gathered at Christmas time. Noon carolling in the halls. A CLUB The members of the “A Club chose for their officers this year Lon Allen, President, Marv Hopper, Vice-President, and Mike Coulter, Secretary-Treasurer. Representative on the Student Council is Ron Harris. Activities of the year included the sponsorship of a Get-Acquainted Dance in September and cooperation with the Pep Club in two dances. PEP CLUB The Pep Club members worked together this year to make the Homecoming ceremony a a bigger and more memorable event. Candidates for queen and attendants were nominated by the football team and then elected by the student body. Their identities were unknown until half-time of the football game. A dance was held afterwards at the National Guard Armory for the alumni and present students of A.H.S. The basketball coronation and social evening was held on March 18 with a theme of Hawaiian Paradise. Fish nets were used to separate the dance floor from the sitting area and for the ceiling. Hanging from the upper nets were many small mirrors which glistened in the light. The club gave a gift to the school of a record player and speakers. The vocal music department had 157 members this year participating in the glee cli s, mixed chorus, and small groups under the direction of Robert Williamson. The first semester’s work was guided toward the presentation of a Christmas concert for the public on December 19. During the second semester all music students were busy preparing for the Tarkio Music Contest and the District Music Contest in Peru. The Girls’ Glee Club, for the fourth consecutive year, was rated superior in the District Contest. The officers for the group were Miriam Rarick, Pres.: Marylyn Johnson, Vice-Pres.: Janet Yelkin, Sec.; Lynda Flies, Mary Lavigne, Sue Leonard, Librarians; Leanne Lunzmann, Student Director. Elvin Shew was chosen as President of the organization while Lon Allen served as Vice-Pres.; Willys Weisbrook as Sec.; John Birdsley as Student Director; and Hal Nelson and Steve Kiechel as Librarians. Louis Magor accompanied the group. The Mixed Chorus attended the Peru Choral Clinic and presented a special convocation as well as participating in the other vocal concerts. Under the direction of Ralph Chatelain the fifty-eight member band has participated in music contests, presented concerts, and traveled to neighboring communities for special events. A uniform drive lias brought band members together by working on bake sales, picking up corn, selling candy and tickets to preformances, and giving a chile feed. ALL-SCHOOL PLAY On November 22, the Junior Class sponsored the All-School cast presentation of The Greatest Man Alive! --a three-act comedy-drama written by Tony Webster. Amos Benedict (Steve Mannschreck), an old man who had led a quiet life, was determined to get publicity by doing something sensational--hanging himself while wearing a derby hat! His old friend Tom Hopkins (Louis Magor), along with others in the cast (Aline Schlange, Jeff Broady, Mike Moody), tried desperately to persuade Amos to change his mind. Others in the cast were Janis Mayer. Charles Hahn, Alan Harms, Kenny Bohling, and Philip Kite. The play was directed by Mrs. Mary Wilson. 1-2-3-..Opps! (Forgot my derby hat.) Curtain Call for Our Town ! :OUR TOWN■ Our Town by Thornton Wilder was presented as the second all-school play of the year on the evening of April 7; the Senior Class sponsored the successful production. Our Town is a play about life in Grover's Corners,N.H. It is rapidly becoming a classic in American literature, having won the Pulitzer prize in drama. The play was under the direction of Mrs. Mary Wilson and it featured a cast of fifty people. The principal characters were Stage Manager (Carl Oestmann), Emily (Mary Griffiths), George Gibbs (Steve Kiechel), Mrs. Gibbs (Marna Lechliter), Mr. Webb (Louis Magor), and Mrs. Webb (Norma Lash). Mr. Glenn Knight, principal of Auburn High School, had this to say about the all-school play: The play was a huge success. I believe it had the best performance of any high school play I have ever seen. A wonderful job by Mrs. Wilson and all of the students in a difficult production. Congratulations!
