The Auburn Gridders under the tutorship of Max Kitzelman again had one of their most successful years in the history of Auburn High. A stubborn Bulldog defense that held opponents to 73 points helped the Auburnites to a 8-1-1 season. Hard blocking by a tough-quick line and skillful running and passing brought the Bulldogs sixth place in the State Class B ratings. Auburn opened the season with a 9-7 victory over Wymore. Nebraska City and Crete were the next to fall, 7-6 and 13-0. The Bulldogs then tied Falls City 0-0 to knock the citians out of the Class A” ratings. The only Auburn loss came at the hands of Ralston, 19-21. The Bulldogs then picked up steam and finished the season with five straight wins: Pawnee 19-0, Humboldt 62-12, Syracuse 21-0, Tecumseh 26-20, and Platsmouth 12-7. For the second year the Bulldogs dominated the South East Border Conference by winning the trophy and by placing Fred Kiechel, center: John Glen and Jerry Rose, guards: Don Beatty, tackle: Kent Wallace, end: and Kenny Boatman and Lon Allen, backs: on the All-Conference Honor Roll. Auburn's power through the air was due to the pass catching ability of ends Kent Wallace , Larry King, and Marvin Hopper. Kent, an All-State selection, pulled several games out of the fire” with his educated toe. Ross Armstrong and Don Beatty , outstanding tackles, made it hard for anyone who TRIED to penetrate their position. The middle of the line was bolstered by veterans Jerry Rose Fred Kiechel , and John Glen . The hard-rock three dealt many crushing blows to opponents on both offense and defense. Ron Simmons, Rod Breazile, and Willis Weis-brook spiced the Bulldog attack with hard blocking and tackling. • ALL CONFERENCE Kent Wallace grabs a pass and scampers for a big gain against Plattsmouth. The Bulldogs had ''top-flight strength in the backfietd this year with Mike Coulter, Lon Allen , Ken Boatman . Ron Wheeler. Claren Keithley, and Ed Johnson.
