No one knows better than you do what education means to you. All of us must realize that education in its social, economic, political and religious setting should prepare us to do better the worthwhile things we hope to do; that education also prepares us to refuse the ready made answers and solutions of other agencies who are ever ready and willing to do our thinking. Every student in every school loves to live. The purpose of his school is to help him learn to live. And every man’s living' will always be affected, in one way or another, by other men’s living. Consequently, extra-curricular activities are nearly as educational as those in the classroom. Auburn High School students—a half century of them—have been eager to live. So each year more and more personality-building activities have been added to the curriculum. Back in 1909, twenty years after the school was founded, seniors listed beside their names organizations similar to these: Athletic Association, Boll-A-Way Club, Cadets, Debating, Baseball, and others. But many changes have come about within thirty years. Most of these have disappeared, but in their place have come others. Two years ago the first student council was elected. The PEP club is now in its third year. G. A. A. is still in the pink ribbon and da-da-ing stage, having been started not quite two years ago. And so the Auburn High School climbs on. Present organizations live, and will die. In their stead will spring others just as stimulating. Education that teaches the art of living— every school’s goal. had (Helen A. This is something new in the year book field and, because of its compactness, is easier handled and can be carried with less effort. The staff wishes to thank especially all those who have made it possible to print pictures and addresses of previous graduating classes. We have endeavored to make this annual of interest not only to the present student body, but to all alumni. of c fiitjuxn ozH-Lafi cfz ool F i IFTY years ago this spring, six boys and two girls walked down the aisle of the old Daugherty Opera House, and received their diplomas from Superintendent Charles Fordyce. Thus these eight young people became the first graduates of the Auburn High School. No fanfare of high school orchestra, no well-trained glee club, no visiting speaker greeted this class of 1889; only their own individual orations formed a program to celebrate the occasion. In the old brick building, erected in 1886, on the hill where the Junior High School now stands, these eight learned their Latin, Geometry and English without the accompaniment of football, dramatics and Junior-Senior banquets. Their only sport was baseball; their only dramatics were in their Literary Society; and their only social affairs were the little parties they arranged for themselves. An interesting feature of this first commencement, and of several others to follow, was the displaying of graduation gifts and flowers by the graduates, there in the hall, for all who attended the commencement to see . . . the more gifts and flowers, the more popular the graduate! For obvious reasons, this custom was soon abolished. Starting with these eight in 1889, the next ten years showed an increase in enrollment to 12; (although in 1896 only one boy graduated—George Gallagher) 1909 found 32 graduating; 1919 had 36; 1929, 58; and this year, 1939, a class of 83 will receive their diplomas. Many families have graduated from this high school; numerous brothers and sisters, many fathers and sons, some cases of both parents and their children; and there are even three generations of graduates; Mrs. Blanche Chandler Rogers and her husband, Mr. Alva Rogers of the class of 1892, their daughter, Mrs. Amy Rogers Flau of the class of 1915, and her daughter, Miss Joan Flau of this years graduating class. Another interesting group is that of a mother and her five daughters; Mrs. Katie Maclay Schriefer, who graduated in 1893, and her daughters; Frieda, in 1915; Anna May in 1919; Laura in 1920; Ilda in 1923; and Lois in 1929. As the number of students grew, the crowded conditions in the old building became increasingly uncomfortable, in spite of an added wing, so in the year of 1913, the freshmen and sophomores held classes in Keedy Hall, and the juniors and seniors met in Souders Hall, so that a new high school could be built. That building is now the Junior High School, for in 1938, the new Senior High School was opened to take care of the now large student body. During these fifty years, many superintendents have come and gone. Beginning with Charles Fordyce in 1889, there were: W. E. Halleck, C. S. Jones, W. H. Gardner, E. Guy Simpson (who died during the school term and who was replaced by W. W. Gallaher), J. A. Doremus, Alexander Peery, S. E. Clark, George Heacock, A. M. Nelson, R. H. Graham, J. A. Jimerson (who left this year to become Executive Dean at Peru), and our present superintendent, A. J. Nebelsick. The principals and teachers have been too numerous to mention, except for one, who has seen hundreds of students go through our high school, who has taught in all three buildings, and who has given many of us a helping hand . . . Miss Roxie McGrew, who began teaching in the Auburn High School in 1910. It is interesting to note how Auburn High School has progressed with the times. Fifty years ago, only the bare essentials of study were offered to the student, but now we have many specialized studies and extra-curricular activities. With the first class, a “Literary Society” was formed, which included debating, writing, readings and musical programs. This society was also enjoyed by the townspeople, although formed primarily for the high school students. A few years later a chorus was started which offered some degree of musical training to those who joined. A debate team was organized, and by 1905 the team was challenging and debating other towns. In 1900, HISTORY as a result of the martial spirit aroused through the land by the Spanish-American War, a cadet company was organized in the high school. Membership was voluntary, and drill was held three times a week. Uniforms were worn by the cadets, and a parade was quite an affair. By 1911, this military organization was crowded out by other activities. The first “Scarlet-And-Green” was published in 1903 in the form of a paper, and since then it has become an annual “year-book.” In 1911 the first school paper was printed, and was continued every two weeks, giving the journalistically inclined students an opportunity to display their talents. Around 1910, music was made a regular activity; glee clubs, small vocal groups and a band were organized, and by 1912, a music teacher was employed and the operettas began, along with an orchestra. Around 1900, both football and basket ball were introduced, and a few years later, track became a major sport. In 1905, girl’s athletics began, and the girl’s basket ball team played other towns. Many championship football, basket ball and track teams have made Auburn High School proud of its athletic department and have filled our large trophy case. Dramatics and declamatory contests were organized around 1910. The class plays soon became an annual affair, and Auburn was represented at the local, district and state declamatory contests. In 1927, Auburn first entered the M-I-N-K contest, which included our musical, dramatic and sport associations, and by winning the “cup” the first three years in succession, we made it permanently ours. Since that time, Auburn has always entered this contest, and has never failed to make a brilliant showing. In 1921, the city library was taken out of the high school, and a new commercial department was added. This offered good business training to the students, and soon became one of the most popular courses. Auburn has also won many of the commercial contests with the neighboring towns. The May Fete was introduced in 1928 as a climax to the various activities of the school year, (although a similar “Class Day Program” had been tried earlier). A Queen and Prince and class attendants were chosen, and since that time the May Fete has been a lovely feature of the Commencement Week. The war years of 1914 to 1918 had little effect upon the High School itself, although many of the graduates went overseas and some were officers in the army. In 1918, the flu epidemic closed the schools for six weeks, and during that time the Armistice was signed. The social life of the high school has also progressed with the times. The alumnae banquets were the first regular social affairs, and were held back as far as 1893. About 1900, the first Junior-Senior Banquet was held in the home of Alexander Peery, and soon the classes became so large, these banquets were taken to the various churches or held in the high school gymnasium. Class parties have been enjoyed for many years, and Senior “Sneak Day” dates back to 1910. Sleighing parties, picnics and all-day outings, were popular with all the classes. During the past fifty years, the unsung driving force behind our school has been the school board. Beginning with the first board of three members—Mr. Edward Boyd, Mr. A. H. Gilmore and Mr. T. W. Eustice, and up to the present board of six members, it has always done everything possible to help and improve our high school. The Auburn High School graduates have gone cn to many colleges, universities and special training schools all over the United States, and even in some foreign countries. Some of our graduates chose the large eastern schools, including Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, Columbia, Annapolis, John Hopkins, Smith and Wellesley. Others chose the various state universities, all ovei the United States. The State Normals have enrolled many Auburnites, and of these, Peru has had the greatest number. The denominational schools have claimed many graduates including Notre Dame, Wesleyan, Bethany, Bellevue, Creighton, St. Benedict’s and St. Mary’s. Of the military academies, Kemper, Wentworth and Culver had several of our graduates, and some of the girl’s schools include Christian, Stephens, Ferry Hall, Lindenwood, William Woods, MacMurray, Ward Belmont, and Monticello. The business colleges in Omaha, Lincoln, and Chillicothe are all represented by Auburn graduates, and many went into the special training schools for art, music, commercial, dramatic and scientific courses. Several of our graduates sought higher education outside the United States. Christine Cotton, '24, attended the International Center School at Florence, Italy; Myra Biggerstaff Kvistberg, '23, studied art in Paris; James Allen, '13, studied medicine at the Lyons University of France; and Mildred Hanna, '10, studied in Norway and Sweden. In every history, the most interesting feature is the “Where Are They Now?” department. The graduates of Auburn High School have found success in many and varied fields. In the vast field of education, we have Dr. Eugene Gilmore, a member of the first class, who is now president of Iowa University, and who has been Dean of Law at the University of Wisconsin and at Iowa University, and was the Acting Governor General cf the Phillipine Islands; Dr. Alexander J. Stoddard, who is now superintendent of the public schools of Denver, and is to be superintendent of the public schools of Philadelphia next year; Dr. C. Ray Gates, who is rated one of the fifty leading educators of cur day; Dr. John Hanna, who is Professor of Law at Columbia University; Mildred Hanna, who is a member of the faculty at Mount Vernon Seminary at Washington, D. C.; Martin Souders, Director of Athletics at Phillips Exeter Academy; Ruby Simpson, Home Economics supervisor in Sidney, Australia; and Maude Stewart, who is to be assistant Dean of Women at Syracuse University next year. In the field of engineering, we have Dr. Richard Hughes, chief eng neer for Standard Oil in Colombia, South America; Clark Cottrell, chief engineer for the California Automobile Association in San Francisco; and Tom Ferneau, who was an engineer on the approaches to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. In the field of law, Edgar Ferneau, a member of the first class, who is practicing law here in Auburn, is now president of the State Normal Schools Board; Katherine Osenbaugh, now of Washington, D. C. was the first woman to pass the bar in this county; and Lewis Tyler, is an admirality lawyer in New York City. In the field cf science and medicine we have Dr. William H. Pope, a prominent surgeon in Sacramento, California; Dr. Alex Cooper of Puerto Rico; Dayton Maclay, who is doing chemical research in Washington; and Wayne Ruddy, who has a fellowship at the University of Maryland to obtain his Ph. D. in chemical research. In art, we have Myra Biggerstaff Kvistberg of Stockholm, Sweden, who has had a one-man exhibit at the Royal Academy in Stockholm, and one of whose paintings now hangs in the new Senior High School. Marvin Shaffer was, for a time, a missionary to China, and now preaches in Vancouver. Otis McQuarry is also a minister in the East. In the field cf finance, we have Leland Coryell, Jr. who has been very successful in the oil business. There have been hundreds of other graduates who have been successful in their various occupations, but we haven't time or space to mention them all. Auburn High School has graduates now living in 38 states, and in seven foreign countries. From the first eight to graduate, we now number 1,643. Of these, 86 are deceased, and only 15 have not, as yet, been located. Our fifty-year anniversary reunion to be held May 19th, will bring back a great number of graduates from all over, and we are sure they will all be as proud of Auburn High School as Auburn High School is cf them. Hutton, Brown The Auburn school system introduced for the first time a course in physical education available to all junior high boys. The aims of the department are threefold. The first is to instill in the boy a love for exercise and recreation for itself, not for a personal or institutional prestige, not for the reward or glory but for the fun of participation. The second is to develop leadership, mental and moral poise, muscular control, courage, fair play, self sacrifice, and loyalty. The third is to create in youth an intelligent and healthful interest in physical activity that will carry over into adult life. THE PROGRAM The physical education program consists of four main groups of activities, namely; formal gymnastics, group games, individual and group tests, and special event programs. Formal gymnastics are not a major part of the program and are only used for variation and a method of obtaining coordination of certain sets of muscles. Group games are used extensively in the program to develop neuro-muscular control and give the boy a general all-around physical exercise that he doesn’t get in his other general activities. Leadership is also developed through group games. Each boy is given a series of individual tests to measure his physical ability. Such tests include running, jumping, tests of strength and tests in athletic game fundamentals. Special event programs are used to increase interest and give team organizations a chance to compete against each other. The major special event program this year was the Indoor Track Carnival in which over a hundred boys participated. I I I ' [ f f Back How: Harper. K. Reed. Boyd. Savage. Vannest. Osborn.
