“
PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL Edited by Dorothy Lavigne OZEiVOlC X V things are preserved |X| throughout (lie ages by mail ami nature. So in the 19158 Scarlet and- Green we have endeavored to preserve the activities, the work and some of the student life of this one year for future references and to brighten our memories of these exciting days in Auburn High School. Of course we cannot put in every little incident of interest but we do hope that a picture or record of events might do just as well to preserve a group of incidents for entertainment in our coming years. “Memory is a capricious and arbitrary creature. You never can tell what pebble she will pick up from the shore of life to keep among her treasures, or what inconspicuous (lower of the field she will preserve as the symbol of ‘thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears . . . . ’ And yet T do not doubt that the most important things are always the best remembered.” —Henry Van Dyke. And so we hope that you will enjoy reading this book as much as we have enjoyed making it. —THE EDITOR. zaLcatLon our old high-school building, we, the seniors of 1938, aflec-tionately dedicate this annual. As the last senior class to be graduated from it, we feel that (lie old brick structure belongs to us in a special way. May we always be grateful for the good times we’ve had in the old building and true to its finest associations! STARLINE The National Thespian Honor Society held their meetings once every two weeks on Monday evenings. During the year four plays were presented: Elmer,” Light,” Squaring It With the Boss,” and A Puritan Style Show. ’ The play Elmer” won a superior rating at the sub-district contest and Light,” the M-I-N-K play, won a rating of good. A system of merits and de-merits was worked out in which members earned merits for taking part in meetings, giving readings, or entering into any dramatic work. De-merits were given for negligence in learning required material, being late at meetings, and creating any unnecessary disturbance at meetings. This created a spirit of competition and made the meetings more interesting. A l. Fra President ijr ic F rascr Afaiionat i cam Top Row—Lavlgne. Power. Hubbert. Whltnack. Second Row -Wlencke. Sm'th, Jlmerson, Hubbell Mr Ncbelnlck Bert Smith, Bob Hemmingscn, Tod Hubbell. Meredith Jimerson and Gwendolyn Reed represented Auburn High School in debate during the 1938 season. The question for debate was “Resolved: That the several states should adopt a unieameral system of legislation.” Debate teams composed of various combinations of the debaters made excellent records in tournaments at Atchison. Kansas; Topeka, Kansas; Doane College. Hastings College and Peru College. They also participated in an invitation tournament held at Auburn and in the district debate tournament at Lincoln. The teams took part in fifty-five inter-school debates. Twenty-two decisions were won. eighteen were lost and the other debates were not judged for decisions. Gwendolyn Reed was graduated at the end of the first semester. Bert Smith and Meredith Jimerson will be graduated this year. Tod Hubbell is a junior and Bob Hemmingscn is a sophomore. During three years Gwendolyn Reed participated in thirty-eight interschool debates, Meredith Jimerson in fifty-five and Bert Smith in eighty-five. Bert was awarded a scholarship in debate by Denver University which enabled him to spend four weeks studying in their school of speech. He is also a member of the National Forensic League. Scene II: Two hours later. Act III— The next morning. SYNOPSIS It tells the dilemna of the McIntyres, who see their boy and girl tossed in the cataracts of adolescence and can help little further than give directions for the turbulent course from a distance, advices which egocentric youth always rejects, of course. These two kids, George and Terry, go through their throes in company with the neighborhood kids. Many things happen to all of them, but the end is bright and promising. The action of the play is laid in the Patio of the McIntyre residence in a university town in northern California. Cline s Pharmacy When you get it at Cline’s you know it is good.
