Sergeant-at-Arms The enrollment of the Auburn Hi-Y Club was greater during 1933-34 than in any year previous to this. Regular weekly meetings were held at which various men engaged in different professions were speakers. The meetings were well attended, and the members received much benefit from them. Many of the Hi-Y members attended the Older Boys’ Conference. The organization had several parties and picnics throughout the year. The club has proved to be a source of enjoyment and inspiration to the boys, besides being of educational value. Page Twenty-one Debate Brown, Sodman, Nebelsick Nebi-aska City Tecumseh ... Humboldt_____ Syracuse .... Auburn ...... Bye ......... J } j THE DISTRICT DEBATE TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE Nebraska City ........ Bye Nebraska City Humboldt . Auburn Auburn Auburn The district debate tournament was held in Auburn on March 17 with five teams participating. Auburn became district champion by defeating Humboldt in the semi-finals and Nebraska City in the finals. THE STATE DEBATE TOURNAMENT The state tournament was held at Lincoln, April 12, 13, and 14. In the first round Auburn won from Scottsbluff by a 3-1 decision. Auburn drew Trenton for the second debate and the Auburn team was defeated 2-1. Later the Trenton team went to the finals, but were defeated by Omaha Tech. In the district and state tournaments Auburn was represented by Neil Brown and Edwin Sodman. Much of the success of the team can be accredited to Mr. Nebelsick, the coach. Page Twenty-two Debate The Auburn High School debaters have had a very successful season. Twelve students registered under the direction of Mr. Nebelsick for the semester course in debate. The question for argumentation, as determined by the state association, was “Resolved that the United States should adopt the essential features of the British system of radio control and operation.” This year the two speaker team was inaugurated throughout the state. Within the debate class six teams were organized, and each team was prepared to debate either side of the question. At the beginning of the season a practice tournament was held at Beatrice, Nebraska. Auburn was very ably represented by Mayre Tangeman, Neil Brown, Howard Henderson, Edwin Sodman, Cecil Rapp, and James Lee Armstrong. Auburn teams, while at Beatrice, debated teams from Louisville, Beatrice, Tecumseh, and Marysville. All debates were non-decision. Two debates were held with each town. Later, in debates held at Hiawatha, Kansas, Auburn was represented by an affirmative team, made up of Mayre Tangeman and Edwin Sodman and a negative team including James Lee Armstrong and Earl Stivers. The affirmative won their debate, but the negative team lost by a decision of 2-1. On the same day an Auburn negative team, Claude Oakman and Cecil Rapp, lost a decision debate at Sabetha, Kansas. Nebraska City was host to all teams of District One for a practice tournament. Auburn was represented by Mayre Tangeman, Duewayne Harpham, Claude Oak-man, Neil Brown, and Edwin Sodman. Auburn met Syracuse, Tecumseh, Nebraska City, and a post graduate team from Plattsmouth in non decision debate. At Lincoln High School the Auburn negative team of Howard Henderson and Cecil Rapp lost two debates. The affirmative team, Neil Brown and Edwin Sodman, lost a decision and won a decision. During the season Auburn was visited by Hiawatha, Sabetha, Lincoln, Plattsmouth, and Syracuse. Two debates were held with each team with the exception of Lincoln. Neil Brown Swordsmen...................................Loren Thompson, Claude Oakman Musicians....................Marian Johnson, Etta Neunaber, Matthew Wiencke MISS ELLEN HEDGE—Director Edmond Rostand, author of “The Romancers,” is one of the brilliant dramatic poets of modern times. The play was performed for the first time in Paris, at the Comedie Francaise, in 1894, and achieved considerable success. It’s delicacy and charm revealed the true poet, and the deftness with which the plot was handled left little doubt as to the author’s ability to construct an interesting and moving drama. The presentation of this play was characterized by the perfection of the scenery and costuming. The cast was well chosen, and each member interpreted his role with a subtlety unusual in high school performances. Although each character portrayal was distinctive, the entire production was harmonious and unified in effect. It is considered one of the best plays ever presented by Auburn High School students, and was rated “superior” at the M-I-N-K Dramatic Arts Contest held at Peru. Page Thirty ML I. N. K.
