P- Amdfwspeofalb ' JUW' QUWM' In Memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy On November twenty-second, nineteen sixty-three The life was taken from K John F. Kennedy. For on that black day two bullets were sent To take away the life of our president. Out of Dallas, Texas the word had been spread Our nation's leader was now lying dead. The world was shocked by that fateful day As millions of Americans went to church to pray. But out of the sorrow, the shock, and the grief, Came proof of America's deep rooted belief. Our people showed strength and unity, too. Going on with the things that they needed to do. He'd surely be proud knowing that we still strive For things he believed would keep freedom alive. 3 N xx Q XM 1afQ5 Y 'wt V My N fi XA vox' U41 -A W'!V' Vg! Eg I 34 'ff W www ,V vm ' 5 SX 3 wW,f'i. Force, Pat Kuzmer, Carol Franklin, Mike Denbo, Don Torcaso, Greg Colvin, Keith Lewis. 17 It all began in September, 1961, when the alumni of Cascade and Olympic joined hands and strode purposefully through the green and white portals of Auburn High. Starting at the bottom, as even the great ones must, we sophomores passed our first ordeal, the tortuous beanie. Learning easily the ways of Auburn High, we meditated upon the winding path that stretched toward Gradua- tion Mountain. We saw a challenge: to make ourselves and our high school the very best that they could be. The gym still echoes with our expression of this feeling- One . . . Nine . . . Six . . . Four . . ., We're on top forevermorell' But to display the quality of our class, we needed leaders to acti- vate our ideas. So we chose the voice of Bill Crocker on the Board of Control, the pen of Jona Nishimoto as secretary, the gavel of Greg Colvin as president, and the assistance of Allen Courter as vice-president. The instigators of noise and cheer for the year were Yvonne Gnoinsky, Dene McAllister, Karen Dluhosh, Judy Ser- quinia, Mary Botting, and Sonia Wrinkle. We chose for our colors the shimmering hues of aqua and silver, and our class flower the white carnation. Thus equipped, we were ready for big things. The sophomore class figured well in the life of Auburn High dur- ing the year 61-62. Gary Crandall, Terry Noble, and Bill Crocker punted and passed to football lettermanships. We were proud of our Homecoming royalty Larry Coffey and Janet Farrow. When basketball season dribbled around, we showed promise for a cham- pionship future. Al Courter captured a spot on varsity, and the sophomore squad, led by Hooker Reiersgard, shone with an un- defeated record. At the Christmas Tolo Jona Nishimoto was an- nounced sophomore princess. The Class of 64- made a name for loyalty, spirit, and interest in every phase of high school life. Spring sprang, and our thoughts were turned to the end of sopho- more days and the beginning of our second year. We held elections to place our finest leadership at the head of the class. Our junior plans unfolded on Class Nite 62 with the thrilling announcement of Mary DeKay as our next president. Her right hand man was to be VP Mike Denbo. Janet Farrow took the secretary position, and the keen mind of Ken Earl was to analyze the Board of Con- trol. That night, we transformed the Student Center into Ye Olde Ice Cream Parlor with a Gay 9O's', atmosphere and delicious banana splits. This tasty addition to the traditional Class Nite was a triumph for the sophomore class, thanks to Carolyn Schutte's efforts. The class also witnessed the naming of Yvonne Gnoinsky, Judy Serquinia, and Arreldene McAllister to the varsity pep' staff. We prepared ourselves well for success as juniors. After an exciting summer at the Seattle Worldas Fair, we entered once again into the lion's den. The pigskin projectile went into action, and B. Crocker, D. Bowen, M. Denbo, L. Coffey, T. Noble, R. Jones, Oswald, and W. Mohn attained the big HA. Our junior varsity registered an undefeated record. Carolyn Schutte and Dave Bowen, as junior royalty participated in the Homecom- ing festivities. Al Courter and Gary Reiersgard deftly aided Troy to a Southern Division PSL championship in basketball. Uphold- ing Auburn's name, juniors McMullen, Fossum, Bowen, and Cof- fey made their marks in wrestling. Arreldene McAllister was crowned our princess at the Tolo Winter Wonderlandf' Spring turned athletics outdoors again with quite a few junior champs in baseball, track, golf, and tennis. Under President Mary, the Class of '64 organized, did much during '62-63. We held a car wash on the brightest Saturday in January, raising almost 100 dollars. Backed by our treasury, we met our traditional duty, the Senior Ball. The theme, Sayonara, was developed with tea house, Japanese garden, and live music. As our second year came to a close, we realized that very soon, we would be the big Seniorsf, Elections for offices in 163-64 FIRST ROW: Greg Brunz, Dick Nickolson, Greg Colvin, Jay Hadley, Pam Skrivan, Tom Tallent, Kathy Sweeney. SECOND ROW.' Kathy Shinn, Mary DeKay, Pam Spiller, Diane Cope, Karen DeSpain, Carol Herbert, Yvonne Gnoinsky, Sonja Hartley, Judy Serquinia, Gwyn Ray, Jona Nishimoto. THIRD ROW: Sharon Sencevicky, Gwen Evens. Linda Gaudette. Tammi Thomp- son, April Howard, Mary Botting, Arlene Murakami, Bertha Dykstra, Maurine Benn, Amie Bull, Eileen Iida, Patty Boyer. FOURTH ROW: Paul Trudeau, Ken Earl, Mike Casteel, Roy Hedden, Julie Thorp, Jim Washam, John Richmond, Mike Denbo, Robbie Terrell, Carolyn Schutte, Dave Bowen. i8f0fuj were held, Three fighting politicians, Iron Mike Casteel. Michael Patrick Callahan, and Sir Donald W. Torcaso. Esq., plastered the halls with their propaganda as they campaigned for the position of A.S.B. president. On Class Nite '63, we waited breathlessly to hear who our fearless leaders would be. Judy Serquinia, Yvonne Gnoinsky, and Arreldene McAllister returned for their third year as cheerleaders, along with Karen Dluhosh and john LaMarche. Bill Crocker was the presidential choice of the Boy's Club, and Jona Nishimoto, became big chief of the Girl's Club. To lead our class in its mightiest hour, we elected Greg Colvin class president, Jay Hadley able vice-president, and Pam Skrivan senior secretary. Ken Earl's debatable assets were again to benefit the A.S.B. cabi- net. The most dramatic moments revealed the identities of our A.S.B. officers. Bonnie Vance and Roy Hedden filled the new positions of secretary of state and interior. Judy Reynolds was named A.S.B. treasurer, and Eileen Iida was chosen A.S.B. secre- tary. The office of vice-president, a job with a reputation to up- hold, was attained by Dick Nicholson. The Class of '64 waited in suspense as next year's leadership roster was completed with the name of our A.S.B. president. He was to be . . . Don Torcaso, To meet the challenges of leading A.H.S., our chosen representa- tives were carefully trained. The annual Auburn High leadership conference showed them how to efficiently serve their school. Mary Dekay, Kathy Shinn, ,Iona Nishimoto, Mike Casteel, Don Torcaso, and Greg Colvin invaded the world of politics at Girls' and Boys' State. After three rainy summer months of preparation, it was September again. The machinery of Auburn High, with '64 at the throttle, acceler- ated as student activities shifted into high gear. The shoulder pad attire was donned, and DeCoria's daredevils Dave Bowen, Wayne Mohn, Larry Coffey, Bill Crocker, jim Denton, Gary Curtis, and Doug Peterson were valiant, though victoryless. Homecoming, alias 'fTwilight Time, featured the queening of Alice Spaight and the kinging of Bill Crocker. Then, our hoop hopes soared as Mike Callahan, J, Ed LaRosa, Gary Reiersgard, Terry Eixenberger, Mike Denbo, jim Oswald, Ed Deeds, and Al Courter racked up a few points. Student government lurched ahead with the initiative of Senior leadership. We organize set the pace as the Student Council, now the Senate, became a body of business under vice-president Dick and pro-tem Carolyn. Upon the departure of Bonnie Vance, the Senate singled out Kathy Shinn to wear the secretary of state badge. We performed our leadership duties well. The Class of '64-'s biggest triumph ever was the timely Holiday Hootenanny, which not only starred pro singers, but also folk discoveries in our own high school who really turned us on. Over a thousand people glowed with the fun of a Hoot, and for the Senior Class, it meant a profit of S450 plus. This enabled us to leave our mark on Auburn High with our Senior gift, a per- manent symbol of the challenges met by the Class of '64, Yes, it's4been a wonderful 540 high school days. As we look back through our experience at A.H.S., many things bring chuckles, grins, and deep thoughts: the fake-out, the 50-mile hike, the sudden loss of a young President, sixth-grade camp, term papers, squirt guns and yoyos, quilted ski jackets, elephant jokes, the twist Cfor a whilej, Mr. Cowles' capers, Mr. Lea's law, Mr. Stone's smile, Mrs. Trimble's tricks, the Trojan head Cdon't step on itj, and on and on forever . . . but- Our good times are all gone, and I'm bound for movin' on, I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way. QemimfO0ass 'V' The Seniors of 1964 elected for its officers these four, from left to right: Greg Colvin, president, Jay Hadley, vice-president, Pam Skrivan, secretary-treasurer, and Ken Earl, ASB cabinet member. Really, they only represent the large number of Seniors loyal to the Class of 1964 who contributed their talents in many directions as student leaders. The Senior Log held by Pam symbolizes the three years of service, spirit, and fun that was part of our class' experience at Auburn High. May this Senior Class truly leave its impression on our high school, and may the pleasant memories of good times live long in the hearts and minds of every single graduate of 1964. ' 'jwwhczmfw This Annual has been assembled due to the supreme efforts and will of this yearis Annual staff. Twenty-two seniors fone having prior experienceb with an unexperi- enced advisor began in September of 1963. Much learning and co-operation has resulted in this book. Mistakes and need for improvement are easily found, but accomplishment and obstacles that have been overcome are more often overlooked. I would like to take this opportunity to praise the members of the staff for their accomplishments. Special credit should go to the editor, Arlene Murakami, and the assistant editor, Karen Dluhosh, for their diligence, perseverance, and leadership. Pat Huse served outstandingly in her capacity as business manager. A great responsi- bility was theirs and it could not have been accomplished without the able assistance of the remaining members of the staff. Special thanks to Mel Branham for his co-operation. I am proud to extend my congratulations and thanks for the industry and initiative by the Seniors listed here: Karen Brown Judy Covington Elaine Craffey Mike Denbo Karen Dluhosh Steve Foster Jim Gummere Carol Herbert Pat Huse Janet Johnson Arreldene McAllister Candy McFarland Pam Morton Bill Powell hlargaret Reilley Linda Sanchez Terri Sedgemore Tamera Thompson Marcia Wlatkins Sandra Watkins Paulette Wlolf Arlene Murakami 57 W N , . The Commercial Club of Auburn Senior High has been active for many years and is a going organization. The Club is composed of energetic junior and senior girls who have shown they are interested in commercial subjects. The mem- bers are instrumental in providing many functions within the framework of the school. They offer their services for all athletic programs, music activities and others. They help the students of A.H.S. by operating the student store, they help the teachers by rendering services in the offices of the school. The girls do charitable work during the school year, they support all activities and when they have a surplus of funds provide the commercial department with some equipment that has not been provided for them. The commercial club has been a very energetic organization and has left many a mark in the school by its achievements throughout these past years. Auburn High can look forward to more activities and accomplishments from this organi- zation. muu..wuWw, t . , ,Mh...,,,. f FIRST ROW: Mr. Taylor, John Nixon, Tom Erickson, Gary Curtis, THIRD ROW: Jim Sandretzke, Leon Eby, Howie Whiting, Richard Bertha Dykstra, Ray Hornbuckle, Ray Bower, Jim Swanson. Mrs. Savage is determined to establish a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams. In the Sanatorium she meets social misfits, men and women, who just cannot adjust themselves to life, In getting to know them, she realizes that she will find happiness with them, and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them. But when the doctor tells her there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do anything for money. As the children continue to conspire against her in order to obtain the money, Mrs. Savage leads them on a merry and amusing chase. They get mixed up in all sorts of ridiculous mishaps, which end in complete frustrations. She is eventually persuaded to leave the sana- torium, after her new friends conspire to get rid of her stepchildren and. through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans. The last scene, a farewell party, is a delightful fantasy where each Hguest' in the sanatorium realizes at last some hopeless dream for something he was never able to realize. 109 pie? rg-ws , his S 5 H 4 E ...W M if i 1 1 14 Ig i t s 4 X wa M SPORTS Astldsgowbmgwzw spealesgowunmw ow GR 91? wg' Aw of S ff vw I Q3 Q Q9 K X SL GQQQJE F, Q GafYCUf'i1S guafd DOUS Peterson tackle Don Edwards center B111 Crocker back John Hayes back Lee Payne tackle Ron Brock back John Coffey back Bob Sanders back egiqziwilgiffik Lb:.,,,.,, fl 192 .5 fi 551 7 .swffw-1 W ,, :aw -ffA' T Wy , ,ee,, If, , - 43, v kiffigfvz i , Q A f' ,523 k ,WL rgsgszaf- ' ,f ,f Q28 ,. . Although the season was one of little success in the Win-Loss Column, the young Trojans gave indica- tions throughout the season that they would be a ball club to be reckoned with in future seasons. The new coaching staff consisting of Head Coach Al De- Coria, and Assistants Bill Burby, Lee Nevers, and Don Hodson, took a squad that was green experience-wise and molded a team that was known in the league for its phys- ical toughness on defense throughout the season. By the Puyallup game it was a ball club that could also move the football in offense. Optimism runs high in the Trojan camp for next season. The Trojans will have about 50 returning gridders from this year's squad which should make for a more experienced team than we had this year. Gaps that must be filled by the loss of Seniors Larry Coffey, All Conference Honorable Mention Left Halfback, Dave Bowen, Wayne Mohn, Cur- tis, Jim Denton, Bill Crocker, Doug Peterson, and Roger Thor, will be taken care of by over twenty returning under- class letter winners. The high point of the season for the Trojan followers, was the Puyallup game played at Troy Field where the league champions were pushed from one end of the field to the other by the fired up Trojans. Although beaten in every department, the Vikings still emerged victorious on two touchdown passes, and an interception returned for a touchdown. The Trojans finished their season with a 6-12 loss to Kent- Meridian at Kent, but gave the Royals a full evening be- fore going down to defeat. Fred Mendoza scored the Tro- jans only touchdown of the season when, with excellent blocking, he scampered 68 yards down the sideline and went into the end zone standing up. The Busy Bis again had a successful season under the coach- ing of Lee Nevers and Don Hodson. They finished with a 3 win-4 loss season record. Coach Cerino did a terrific job of using a variety of boys in every match and still coming out on top of their opponent every time. This year the wrestling team has been very successful under Coaches Gene Cerino and Bill Burby. The wrestling team finished second in the Puget Sound League playoffs, third at the W'est Central District and seventh at the State Tournament at Pullmen. The boys representing Auburn acted like they never have before, they wrestled like super- men. Cal Fossuin took second place in his weight division while Don Edwards and Lee Payne took fifth in their respective divisions. With this nucleus and many returning wrestlers Coaches Cerino and Burby are very optimistic about next year's wrestling team. gf f 5Q H X ff' 121 ,v w l 1964 TwcbfTeam Looks Us Best lw Yewus Head Coach Schweikl Assistant Coach Pavalunas Al Courter, Larry Coffey, jim Oswald, jim Denton, Outfielder: Jim Oswald Fred Mendoza.
