' ln Memorium Sometimes there are tragic twists in the complicated path of life. lt is not up to us to wonder why they are there, nor to try to understand them. The smoke that darkened the skies during the last days of 1958 is gone, but its shadow will long remain in our hearts. In memory of those of the Hollenbach family who perished together in the fire that destroyed their home, and in tribute to those who survived, we of the Auburn Senior High Student Body humbly offer our sympathy and respects. The Spanish writer Cer- vantes reminds us that The road is always bet- ter than the inn. The iourney which has led you to this point should have prepared you for the road you will travel tomorrow. You have been given the necessary tools, and, if you have learned to think for yourself, to enioy the chal- lenge of knowledge to be gained, to live and work 'with people-the iourney has been well spent. Graduation, like an inn, is a place on the road from which you can look backward with pride and forward with determination to some new and better endeavor. Hayes Holman Superintendent --A-ua' '-J-is' - Life is likened to a iourney. Like any journey there are many hills, curves, and branches. Each hill must be surmounted before one can see what lies beyond. Such is life also. After climbing to the top of one hill it is easy to relax and coast to the bottom and there re- main. ln life one must put forth added effort to continue climbing for greater heights. On a journey, as in life, one is confronted with many choices of paths to follow. To choose properly one must use all of the past experience one may possess. Each high school student has been helped to gain the experience that will help in making the decisions the lead to a suc- cessful life iourney. Graduation is the day which appears as the top of a giant hill. lt has been surmounted but now it is found there are many branches from which one must select the proper road for the future. You as the class of 1959 have been helped by your experiences at Auburn Senior High in choosing paths that will be of service to you and to mankind. Best wishes to all of you for each and every mile you travel from here. C. V. ' Girls' Club Through the Girls' Club, to which all girls in Auburn High School automatically belong, the feeling of friendliness, helpfulness, and high standards of living are developed and encour- aged. Once a month meetings are held and pro- grams presented. ln September, everyone met and became ac- quainted with the sophomore girls in a Big and Little Sister Tea. Every iunior and senior girl was given a Soph to look after, and help over the hard spots. The Girls' Club Cabinet presented its annual play, this year entitled, Sofapillio. It was a great success at both the Enumclaw Conference and the December meeting. As climax to their activities, the girls enter- tained their mothers with a Mother and Daugh- ter banquet on the night of May 7, 1959. They saw the impressive installation ceremony of the club's 1959-'60 officers who were officially giv- en their positions. The Girls' Club, with Mrs. Billie Fitch as ad- viser, has had a very successful year. 0 THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY WEESE JEWELRY 202 EAST MAIN STREET- AUBURN, WASHINGTON TEmple 3 3800 ll I mt.: X' THE ART CLUB Sitting, left to right: Mr. John Davis, Instructor: Bonnie Lawerence, Treasurer: Darryl bright, President: Carol Schoeler, Vice President, Laura Hassel, Secretary. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA ACTIVITIES The Year 1958-59 has seen many activities undertaken by the members of the Au- burn Chapter of Future Farmers of America. Under the superior guidance of Mr- Vance Venn, Auburn FFA adviser, the boys have taken a strong part in every fair, show, and contest presented in this area. , Last August the 'Auburn Chapter had several entries in the King County'Junior Fair at Enumclaw. A good many individual ribbons were won by members, and the chapter walked away with Herdsmanship trophy. Auburn was well represented at the big Western Washington Fair last September. The main entries were in the dairy department where the boys won several ribbons in both' Type and Showmanshipp Auburn also entered a judging team. The local chapter entered a team in the Parliamentary Procedure contest, the crops contests, the Co-op Quiz, several judging contests, and Jim Myrick entered the Public Speak- ing Contest. The biggest event of the year for the boys of the Auburn Chapter is the North- west Junior Livestock Show. They had many entries in both the steer and hog classes. Auburn's applicants for State Farmer Degree were LeRoy Johnson, and Bob Hocking. Also Jim.Myrick and Bob Hocking went to the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. Mis souri, last fall. Only a few of the FFA activities have been mentioned here. The accomplishments are too numerous to mention. The Auburn Chapter of Future Farmers of America is truly an organization of which the school and community can be proud. 0 THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY DOXON AND SONS Mncsoss-mu oisrmuton nv c sneer soumnsr - Auaum, WASHINGTON - TE a-4555 I5 will-. fi-'.....7 ...- ,wssuf 7 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA Row one, left to right: Sue Swanson, Linda Porter, Nancy Fallert, Sharon Natsuhara, Donna Beers, Donna Burns, Gerry Heath, Karen McDonald. This year's Green Peppers have worked hard to be of service to the school and to promote school spirit. On Wednesday nights the girls' shower room was filled with busy girls, under the lead- ership of Green Peppers, making pep signs. Fluffy green and white Pom-Poms were sold at the foot- ball games to create spirit. Where there's anything to be done, just call on the Green Peppers! These girls were kept es- pecially busy this year selling hot dogs and coffee at games, selling football booster buttons, decor- ating for the football banquet, and sponsoring the Winter Sports Banquet honoring the Basketball and Wrestling teams. Under the supervision of Mrs. Lew Corwin, the club elected officers and took its first field trip to Columbus Hospital in Seattle. Those who show interest in the club and regularly attend the meetings throughout the year are allowed to go on the field trips- Those earning 75 points or more received an award at a special dinner. The girls earned their points by writing, typing, or folding letters, making posters, acting in skits, attending meetings, going on field trips and other such iobs for the good of the club. The club is sponsored by the Graduate Nurses Club of Auburn. This year Mrs. Maxine Burson, a registered nurse of Auburn, is their supervisor. Miss Cecelia Kane and Mrs. Ellen Potter have given the girls a lot of help. The Future Nurses decorated a float for the Homecoming Parade, made favors for three Auburn rest homes at Halloween, went Christmas caroling at the Nursing homes and had a party afterward, and made candle favors for the hospital at Christmas. On their field trip this year, they went to Buckley State School. Next year the club plans to sponsor a girl or boy at Buckley State School. Baseball, 1958 With seven returning lettermen, the 'I959 Troians hope to equal or better the excellent record of the 1958 co-championship baseball team. Auburn's '58 squad indeed produced an enviable record as may be seen in the statistics given below. Mike Carnahan's 1958 pitching record was exceptional with eight wins, one loss, an earned run average of .8 per game, 85 strikeouts ian average of nine per seven-inning gamel, 20 walks ian average of two per gamel, a no-hit, no-run triumph against Enumclaw, and a no-hitter against co-champion Renton. The final game of the season was a thriller with Mike engaging in a tight pitching duel with Renton's ace hurler, Zetterburg. The fifth inning produced one run for Renton on an infield error, but Auburn came back in the sixth to tie the score on a terrific home run by Mike. The winning run for the Trojans came in the last inning on a pinch-hit single by Don Carnahan scoring Rod Ancheta. The '59 squad will have to hustle to beat this outstanding record. Coach Margaret Trimble spent tireless hours in building skills and experience in her raqueteers for the future. Pr., Senior Class History COLORS: LAVENDER AND WHITE FLOWER: FORGET-ME-NOT MOTTO: lF YOU CAN'T FIND A PATH - MAKE ONE!- As we, the Class of 1959, march confidently toward the future, we must pause for a moment to look back over our past three years at Auburn Senior High. We re- member the fall of 1956 when we entered as sophomores, a little timid at first, but anxious to become a part of high school life. Our class officers were Pat Mueller as president, Tony Nonan as vice president, and Loretta Tate as secretary-treasurer. Homecoming royalty from the sophomore class included Princess Linda Adams, and Prince Gary Houle. Our sophomore hop, Beanie Bounce, was very successful and began a new tradition at Auburn High: orientation beanies for the incoming sopho- mores. Gary Lawler represented our class in the all-school play, Charley's Aunt. The next year we came back as zealous iuniors, with President Gene Lindbo, Vice President Tony Nonan, and Secretary-Treasurer Sonia Taylor as our class leaders. The iuniar boys were active in sports and were well supported on the yell staff by Bonnie Robertson and Sonia Taylor. Sonia also represented us as Homecoming Princess with Ron Ames as Prince. The iuniors eagerly participated in preparations for the Junior-Senior Ball which followed the theme, Manhattan Mood. Rod Franz, BZII Ramseyer, Gary Lawler, and Judy Lewis all gave excellent performances in Harvey, the all-school play presented in the fall of 1957. , September, l95B, brought the occasion we had long awaited as we entered the familiar school as mighty seniors. At the head of the class was Richard St. Pierre as president, with Tony Nonan as vice president and Loretta Tate as secretary-treas- urer. Student body officers were Prtsident Bill Ramseyer, Vice President Gene Lindbo, Secretary Linda Adams, and Treasurer Karen Swanson. The Troians showed a fighting spirit this year, even though they didn't win every game. Senior boys winning football letters were Alan Beard, Mike Carnahan, Terry Fox, Gene Lindbo, and John Ribary. Lynne Benson, Bonnie Robertson, and Sonia Taylor were senior yell leaders, and Rena Dray and Sharon Hoffman backed the team on the song staff, At the annual football banquet, Alan Beard received the Coach's Achievement Award and John Ribary was made Honorary Captain. Chosen to reign over the gala Homecoming celebration were Cherry Noel and Tony Nonan ns Queen and King. Basketball season got under way with several exciting games, and the team's spirit never lagged. Cecil Rackliff, Mike Carnahan, Ron Ames, Dick St. Pierre, Willis Brock, and Darwin Reynolds were the seniors on the squad. A new sport, interschool wrestling, was introduced into Auburn High's sports program this year under the direction of Coach Ralph Walter. Seniors taking part in the matches were Ken Flint, Chuck Clark, Dick Smith, Ed Segrave, and Gary Morgan. , The Senior Class Council, which consisted of the class officers and three repre- sentatives fram each U.S. History class, was active in planning and carrying out senior activities and preparations for graduation. Council members besides the class officers were Alan Beard, Jenelle Echols, Ken Flint. Barbara Jones, Molly Kinney, Janet Ben- son, Dennis Olsen, Bonnie Robertson, Cecil Rackliff, Hans Scott, Dick Sulser, Shannon Tribe, Karen Swanson, John Venzone, and Bob Shefner. Seniors played an important part in most activities this year, including the all-school play, Act Your Age. Gayle Schenck, Barbara Eastling, Gary Lawler, and Janet Benson all gave realistic performances in this production. In other fields, Barbara Jones won the D.A.R. Award and Janice Brown received the Betty Crocker Home- making Award. These are iust a few of the memories of our high school days that we will treasure for years to come. Although our future paths may never cross, we will al- ways remember our happy times as the Class of 1959. 58 LINDA ADAMS The darndest things happen!
