Sa Se ee SS Se Foe at | ra UR i i mf A drawing from a 1904 Auburn yearbook shows the academy that was used as our first high school. honoring the past The first building used for a high school in Auburn was built in 1858 where the Eckhart Public Library now stands. Twenty years later a new building was: built and served as a high school until it was converted to a junior high in 1920. This building, torn down in 1956 was replaced by the McKenney Junior High School at the same loca- tion. The McIntosh High School building with which we are most familiar was completed and ready for use in 1920. Since 1960, extensive remodeling has brought us language and science labs, a chorus and band room, a shop, and a library. Now Auburn High School ends its 111th year by graduating the Class of 1967. The last Follies honors the memory of AHS while anticipating progress to come. The purpose of the Follies of 1967 has been to record the events of a year of transition: a year of honoring the past and building for the future. eno ee eer ‘decciiaanantanertiaetatinaiaiiatinutmmuiiie toe omnes Known by many students as the “old junior high,” this building was occupied by high school students from 1876-1920. The crowning ceremony took place before the Auburn grandstand, as the band formed a stairway in the b ackground. Elaine Miller was crowned homecoming queen by a bedraggled football player who was, in reality, the senior class president, Kenny Scott. The court included Leslie Mavis and Jeanne Turner, senior attendants; Carman Hagerty, junior attendant; Debbie Westland, sophomore attendant; and Becky Clement, freshman attendant. After the crowning ceremony, the queen and her court took their positions on the float, a master- piece assembled by the senior class under the direction of Joyce Morman and Wayne Wilcoxson. Depicting a giant stairway leading to the stars, the float was pulled once around the field; thus, the last homecoming in the history of AHS was brought to a close, with Elaine and her court taking their places as the last of Auburn High School’s homecoming royalty. ie sad hawk Ins usa ) dogpatch Soe cae Se Rea ao kas 16 rN Te EN RON He) EINE Y LS URUETS CRN i Ronee mess ee - a Srrsamnonemacnee cong BUSES ea ee md pit Pee fennel I IAEA TITRA TEE ETERS RB AM EWS NIRE NS Freer BES k spirit stic hundred y) 1f) ’ last year ls platt’s holler motorcade to garrett devi 18 honor banquet spring comes to ahs F.T.A. auction computer dance french class field trip 19 spring housecleaning tudents 5 = S ds tuo) i= DB = DB a TIERRA VENTA T DRAG Rae AAT ETRE HE ReRTRT IN SEAN YEE TR ERYY RCRD: SeSotS MEN PENT! As athletic director, Dalen Showalter was kept busy throughout the entire year. He had contacted area schools and scheduled approximately 110 athletic contests. He was in control of the athletic budget and sale of tickets, including tourney tickets, for all events. Mr. Showalter obtained the officials and _ student-faculty workers for home contests. Supervision of home contests and represent- ing the school at away varsity contests, along with providing transportation for the teams and fans to away games were also duties of the busy AHS athletic director. After receiving the kickoff, Auburn was forced to kick. Garrett drove to the Auburn 20 and attempted a field goal but failed. The Devils took over on their own 20-yard-line with 14 seconds remaining in the first half. Suddenly Gary Grogg threw a long pass to Tim Albert who lateraled it to Dave Cramer who put the Devils on the Garrett 30-yard-line. In the remaining two seconds of the first half, Grogg made a perfect pass to Ron Martin who scored for the Red and Black. The kick was no good, and the score was 19 to 13 at the half. The Railroaders scored six points during the first part of the third period. The quarter ended, how- ever, with Kenny Scott recovering a Garrett fumble putting Auburn on the Garrett 44. In the final period Gary Grogg made a 20-yard pass to Tim Albert to take Auburn to Garrett’s 24. Dave Cramer scored the winning touchdown for the determined Red Devils. Rex Engle’s kick was good, making it 26 to 19. Garrett then drove to the Auburn 38, but Terry Hornbacker intercepted a pass to secure the ball and a much-wanted victory for the Auburn Red Devils. Rex Engle refuses to give in to the yell of “Block that kick!” as he gains that valuable extra point for the Red Devils. 52 In one of the more exciting plays of the game, agile Dave Cramer slips past a Railroader with some help from Gary Grogg (16) and a teammate. The gridders’ 1966 season began on the home field against a tough Huntington ‘“‘No-Name”’ team. Auburn felt defeat for Huntington handed them a 28— decision in the opener. The experience gained in the first game proved valuable as the AHS Devils next won over Bluffton and Angola. In the final quarter Auburn bulled over the TD line to defeat the Bluffton Tigers 6—0. Dave Cramer scored with three TD’s and Dave Mitchell followed up with two successful extra points for the Devils’ second victory. Using both their passes and Auburn’s also, the Nappanee Bulldogs outscored the Red Devils by a close score of 21—14. The loss left Auburn with a record of 2—2 for the season. Auburn’s fifth game of the season proved to be too long as the Eagles of Columbia City defeated our gridders 28—3. But the bumps and bruises received in the game gave evidence of the determination of the red-black gridders. Fort Wayne Snider was Auburn’s next foe. The seasoned and undefeated Snider Panthers held Au- lead to victory burn scoreless most of the game, while tallying 42 points. The Panthers returned to the Summit City with a 49—7 victory. The annual Auburn-Garrett grid battle was played on the rival’s soil this year. The game was very exciting as the lead bounced back and forth but came to rest on the mighty shoulders of the AHS gridders as the Railroaders were defeated by a score of 26—19. The Auburn Red Devils returned to home soil to host the East Noble Knights. The Devils started out strong with 12 points in the first quarter while holding East Noble scoreless. However, as the end drew near, Auburn was on the bottom 12—14, and anxious fans saw an exciting finish. East Noble’s defense held Auburn at their 6-yard line, but in the final seconds of the game Dave Mitchell came through with a kick, giving the Devils a 15—14 lead as the final quarter ended. The victory over East Noble was the last win for AHS. The scheduled Decatur game was cancelled due to excessive snow and other conflicts. The last sea- son of Auburn High School ended with a 4—4 over-all record, and a 4—1 record for conference games, placing the red-black gridders third in the NEIC standings. 55 TEAMWORK! Despite plenty of enthusiasm and spirit, Coach Ned Schlosser’s Devils ended the last Auburn High School basketball season with a disappointing 1 and 19 record. In the opening game of the season, the Auburn Devils, with inexperience and first-game jitters, were handed a 68—37 loss by the Columbia City Eagles. Much the same story was encountered in the second game at Portland as the Panthers defeated the Devils 56—35. However, the Red and Black bounced back to secure their first victory over the Blazers at the Eastside gym, 49—46, in an overtime thriller. Exhausted by their previous night’s victory, Auburn lost to Huntertown 60—35. Though the Devils lost to their rivals, the Garrett Railroaders, 62—48, they played one of their best games with Dan Kruse pushing through 19 points. After losing to the Churubusco Eagles 54—40, Auburn surprised everyone by playing a fabulous game against the East Noble Knights, only to lose 61—60 in a double overtime. The Devils traveled to the gym of the Angola Hornets eyeing a victory but came back with a 55—45 loss. In the Holiday Tournament at Columbia City, Auburn lost to the Eagles 67—45 in the afternoon game and were downed 49 —41 by LaPorte in the consolation game. Tim Albert, Chuck Smith, and Dan Kruse all broke into double figures in that game. In the third road game the South Adams Starfires gave the Devils a 91—41 lacing. Due to bad weather the Bluffton game was postponed and the Red Devils waited a week before meeting Fort Wayne Snider, who led all the way to hand Auburn an 86—41 loss. A big North Side team proved to’be too much for the Devils as they racked up an 87—29 victory over Auburn. In the re-scheduled Bluffton game Chuck Smith and Glen Stonestreet led the Devils in a strong effort to overcome the Tigers, but Bluffton came out on top 77—54. A much improved Auburn team played the Huntington Vikings and Albion Trojans coming out on the short end once more 52—38 and 72—63 respectively. The Auburn Devils traveled to Lakeland to end the regular season with a 68—32 defeat. In the Sectional Tournament at East Noble, the Devils gave the Garrett Railroaders a rough time, but Garrett came out ahead 59-—45 ousting Auburn from the tourney and ending the last Auburn Red Devil basketball season. The sound of AHS students voicing their opinions and offering new ideas could be heard at the Stu- dent Council meetings. The Student Council held its meetings every Tuesday for one hour. Composed of student representatives from the home- rooms and organizations in the high school, the Student Council plans activities and directs school elections. As one of its main activities, the Student Council sponsored a basketball game between AHS faculty and the WOWO Aces of the Air on March 30. This was the Student Council’s largest source of income. Members of the Student Council donated $200 to the American Field Service to further support the Exchange Student Program. This year’s Council continued the Foster Child’s Program which gives financial aid to Tam Yat Ming. Showing patriotism by raising the flag was the duty of the members of the Student Council. Also, each Monday morning a Student Council member led the student body in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Chorus found the return of a former director, Mrs. Marcelle Voss. Their first performance was during the November 23 ‘Thanksgiving Assembly at which they sang, “Let There Be Light,” “‘Battle Hymn of the Repub- lic,’ and “‘Born to be Free.”’ The old familiar songs of Christmas were sung by the Chorus at the Christmas Assembly in the gym. The same songs were presented for radio on WOWO. As the end of school neared, the Auburn and Water- loo Choruses presented a joint concert on April 20 and 21. The first concert was held in Waterloo and the second concert in Auburn. Mrs. Marcelle Voss directs the chorus. 94 C. Williams, L. Davis, M. Grueter, K. Pulver, M. Harris, P. Beaty, J. Bruce, H. During the football season, the Red Devil Band also participated in the DeKalb County Fall Fair. The band won first place over its old rival, Napoleon, Ohio, in the Saturday parade. On November 15, the band had its annual Cabaret Concert at which some familiar songs were played. In the second semester of school, the Auburn, Ash- ley, and Waterloo bands joined forces to give a concert on February 3. On April 15, the band re- ceived a superior rating at the NISBOVA State Music Contest at New Haven. FRONT ROW: M. Brown ( V. Pres.), M. Souder, R. Davis, C. Lyon, J. Hagerty, R. Metcalf, D. Jewel, R.
